Cyrus? Is it too "Miley"?

A friend of mine is considering the name [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] for her little boy due in [name_u]January[/name_u]. She wanted a name reflecting some part of her ethnicity, something relatively unique but still a legitimate name and something that would be easy to say and spell. [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] is a Persian name (her Gma is from Iran) and it meets all of her requirements…and we thought it was cool that it was historically given to a lot of Persian kings. But what is the first thing–especially in the United States–that comes to mind when you hear [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]?

[name_f]Miley[/name_f]…

She loved it when she first read it, but then when she realized that [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] = [name_f]Miley[/name_f] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] she kind of backed off. So…what do you think? Is that name too connected to [name_f]Miley[/name_f]/[name_u]Billy[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u]? Would it bring too many comparisons right now, especially for a boy? Because it really is a lovely name and I’ve been trying to reassure her that 5-10 years down the line (when he is in school) that [name_f]Miley[/name_f] [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] will be a distant memory and his classmates will have no idea who she even was. But she’s still hesitant :-/

EDIT

Thank you all! Hopefully she’ll listen to strangers who tell her the name is perfectly fine because she certainly wasn’t listening to me

And for those suggesting looking at other Persian names, she has Her short list is Avan, Jasper, Dastan, Rayan and Cyrus…but Cyrus was her favorite.
She’s also got separate Greek, Scandinavian and Hebrew lists, too, but since she already used Greek and Hebrew for her little girl she wanted to do Scandinavian and Persian for this one (and the Scandinavian middle name she picked out is her father’s name, Frederick).

She says Kaspar is a definitely no.
Lol her name is Wendi (Casper Meets Wendy!)

But she’s more than willing to hear suggestions you guys have! MN will be Frederick, LN is Eriksson

I do think of the [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] family, considering how they’ve been so much in the news and on the radio lately, but the association will probably fade as young [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] grows up into an adult. Still, I’d want to avoid the remarks and associations as a child and teen, and there are many other wonderful Persian names that don’t have such blatant connotations.

I have seen a little boy named [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] on TV. I think the name is usable! Besides [name_f]Miley[/name_f] will be way older and hopefully not making headlines when your friends son is older! The comparison will eventually fade! I say go for it, its such an adorable name, and if it has a special meaning behind it then she shouldnt be worried. Maybe suggest she use it as a middle name is she is very worried about it.

May i suggest Kasper, its also a Persian name, cute as a button too!

[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] does not make me think of those musicians. To me it brings to mind ancient kings, warriors, scholars, that sort of romantic historical image. [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] is one of my favorite names and I find it impeccably handsome. I’d tell your friend to go for it!

I like [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]. It doesn’t make me think of Miley at all

I didn’t make the connection until I saw it in the title. I think it’s a handsome name and I think it’d be okay to use, as long as she doesn’t name her daughter [name_f]Miley[/name_f].

It reminds me of [name_f]Miley[/name_f]. A few years ago I would have said it was fine but she’s kinda gone crazy. Though in the future it would be fine. By the time her child is older she will hopefully be a distant memory.

THANK YOU ALL! Hopefully she’ll listen to strangers who tell her the name is perfectly fine because she certainly wasn’t listening to me

It is very strongly linked to Ms. [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] and I would not be so quick to say that she will be going away anytime soon.

Lohan is still very relevant and she hasn’t made a decent movie in years.
[name_f]Christina[/name_f] Aguilera is now a very popular judge on the voice and still relevant.
[name_f]Britney[/name_f] Spears is somehow still relevant and made a guest appearance on the [name_f]Miley[/name_f] album and signed/is about to sign a lucrative deal in [name_f]Vegas[/name_f].
I would say the name may be usable in 20 years but 5 years is a bit too soon to say that.

I agree with @bibliophile that there are so many wonderful Persian names out there that I would stick to one without such blatant connotations.

It is a risk and she has younger siblings so even if [name_f]Miley[/name_f] isn’t relevant in 5 years her younger sister maybe -a la [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] now being an up and coming actress following in [name_f]Mary[/name_f]-[name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]'s footsteps. [name_f]Liz[/name_f] [name_m]Olsen[/name_m] is in the next Avengers movie so even if she isn’t a household name yet, she may be soon.

I never really made that connection until you said something about it. I think [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] is such a great name and if she really loves it then she should go for it but if there is something holding her back then she should see if there is a name out there that’s better than [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]. There’s nothing worse then picking a name when you’re not 100% and then being stuck with it. If Curus is the name for her son then nothing will surpass it but she should keeping looking just in case.

While [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] can lead people to think of [name_f]Miley[/name_f], I don’t go there immediately. I think it’s a wonderful name, and if it meets her requriements, some teen singer shouldn’t turn her off of it.

No, it doesn’t immediately remind me of [name_f]Miley[/name_f] (though goodness knows that’s an awful connotation). I think it’s a nice, unexpected name. Tell her not to let that ruin it for her : )

I recommend [name_m]Silas[/name_m] it is a great name.

I love the name [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]. If I met a little boy named [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], [name_f]Miley[/name_f] would be the last thing on my mind.

Honestly there is always going to be associations with a name. Growing up when I was in elementary there where two girls named [name_f]Jill[/name_f]. One was a normal, one was “special”. Now [name_f]Jill[/name_f] is a perfectly fine name, as far as I know there are no known bad associations with the name. But normal [name_f]Jill[/name_f] was teased because she shared a name with special [name_f]Jill[/name_f]. Or you may choose a name then when the little boy is 2 the next crazy starlet might have his name. I once knew a guy named [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]. He was born 3 years before [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]'s [name_f]Carrie[/name_f] put him on the map. You just never know who is going to make head lines and with what name.

If she loves [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], it’s an awesome name. She should go for it.

Tell her to check out the song “[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] in The Moonlight” by Empty Hats

When I hear [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m], this is what I think of: Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball (Official Video) - YouTube

I did not think of [name_f]Miley[/name_f] or [name_u]Billy[/name_u] [name_u]Ray[/name_u] until I started reading the thread. This name is totally useable and a fantastic name to boot. And I agree with what you said, by the time any [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] born today makes it to school, [name_f]Miley[/name_f] will hopefully be a distant thought, or at least less crazy.

I love the sound of this name too, but unfortunately it definitely has trashy pop singer connotations, and I doubt most people my age and a little younger (twentysomethings and teenagers) will forget about [name_f]Miley[/name_f] quickly. I would not use it for that reason.

Not too connected…unless she has anyone called [name_f]Miley[/name_f] or [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_m]Miles[/name_m] or [name_u]Billy[/name_u] in the family. I don’t think the connection is immediate unless something else pulls your thoughts to the [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] family.

I would have never connected [name_m]Cyrus[/name_m] with [name_f]Miley[/name_f] until I saw this thread. I wouldn’t be too concerned about it.

I immediately thought of [name_m]Darius[/name_m] as an alternative.
