I’ve always loved the name [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f]. I know it’s not very loved on NB, but I blame that on pronunciation issues. [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] - in [name_m]Dutch[/name_m] - is pronounced with a very sharp G sound. I agree that it sounds very… plump? But I feel like, with every name, if you can imagine the right aesthetic and vibe, every name has its beauty.
A little bit of history…
[name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] is a very old name, already used in the 12th century. It was used in [name_f]Bohemia[/name_f] (historical region in the Czech Republic) and later on “taken over” by the Scandinavians. Quite a lot of royals have [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] as a first or middle name, for example [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] of [name_f]Bohemia[/name_f] (Queen of [name_m]Denmark[/name_m] from 1205 - 1212), [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] of [name_m]Denmark[/name_m], after her marriage to [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] III: [name_u]Maria[/name_u] Feodorovna, [name_f]Queen[/name_f] of [name_f]Russia[/name_f], [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] [name_u]Louise[/name_u] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Princess[/name_f] of [name_m]Denmark[/name_m].
According to NB, [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] means day maiden, but I also came across day’s glory, day mother/daughter, peace/calm and tranquillity.
To me, [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] sound very whimsical and fairy-like. I imagine a little girl with thick, long curls and pale skin. [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] blue eyes and a tender smile. She is soft and dainty, but with a sharp edge. She spends her summer days near streams and trees, reading and counting butterflies. In the winter, she takes long walks through snowy forests and listening to the sounds of nature. Dagmar’s colors are lavender and moss green, and I imagine a deer as her favorite animal.
What are your thoughts on this name? I’d love to hear!
I agree how much the right aesthetic can change. It kinda sounds like an harsh, nasty noble woman to me (not in a cool way) but this description is really charming!
I love to hear what names mean to people! I don’t think [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] has really had my attention before, but I feel like [name_f]Dagney[/name_f] and [name_m]Dragomir[/name_m] have similarly tricky sounds to love, but they’re well worth it with their stunning meanings and alternative beauty…I am going to pick up [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] and put her into the same boat as these two.
I really like [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] (and [name_u]Dagny[/name_u], which it always reminds me of) but for other people. I’d love for it to see more appreciation on NB!
I love it and [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] too. The strong sounds really appeal to me, it sounds noble and like a girl/woman who knows her mind and isn’t afraid to make her mark! The imagery you’ve shared is beautiful
[name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] is a ski hill near me ! So I think of slopes hills, speed and winter . I think it works as a name for sure as surname names are popular and to me it feels it fits that aesthetic . I had no idea of it’s use in royal families but very cool
I am quite fond of [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f]! She does feel very clunky to me, but I like her as a middle name a lot… she feels quite regal there. On another name forum, there was someone wanting to name her daughter [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] [name_u]Louise[/name_u], and I thought that was so beautiful!
I personally am more fond of [name_u]Dagny[/name_u], over the years… similar origins (from what I’ve heard), similar sound, but feels more modern a la [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], [name_u]Darby[/name_u], [name_m]Dabney[/name_m], etc. I love the meaning “new day” for [name_u]Dagny[/name_u], as well! [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_u]Louise[/name_u] is in my top three; I’m a huge [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] fan. Family have put up a huge fuss on [name_u]Dagny[/name_u], citing similarities in sound to “dagger”, so I assume [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] would get the same (if not worse!) teasing, but I still like them. I was absolutely crushed by my family’s reaction to [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u], but have gotten so much love for her since on nb that I take their opinion with a grain of salt.
[name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] was the name of my paternal great grandmother. While I like the meaning I’m not fond of the name. I think I prefer [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] or even [name_u]Damaris[/name_u] as an alternative option.
I usually don’t like names heavy on the letters ‘D’ or ‘G’ (I have very strong opinions on letters) but I really love [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f]! There’s also a variant I heard of it- [name_f]Dagmara[/name_f]- with I thought was gorgeous.
It’s not a name I would personally use, because due to my synesthesia, I typically avoid hard Gs, especially in femme names. But I love the idea of it, and if I met a little [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f], I would be thrilled!
I love [name_f]Dagmar[/name_f] but only when it is pronounced more like DOC-mar verses DAG-mar. It has a rich history and a beautiful meaning. Also, I can’t help but love the thought of using the nicknames “dax” and/or “doc”.
When I first saw it I cringed. It’s very harsh, just not my style. But after reading your description of her, I kinda love it! It is strong, powerful, historical, and full of whimsy. I think if you paired a softer nickname with it, it may come across lighter, perhaps [name_f]Mara[/name_f] (means strength)?
