I’ve always loved the name [name_m]Koda[/name_m]. It’s from Elfin Lied, a short film. However, it was a male characters’ name. We don’t want to know the gender to our third child, due [name_f]February[/name_f] 15th. I figured [name_m]Koda[/name_m] could also been a great NM for [name_u]DAKOTA[/name_u]! I’ve also loved [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] as a unisex name!
What are some opinions on a boy OR girl named [name_u]Dakota[/name_u]? Or just [name_m]Koda[/name_m]?
I prefer [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] to [name_m]Koda[/name_m]. Actually I like [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] better on a girl, which reminds me of [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] [name_m]Johnson[/name_m] from 50 Shades of [name_u]Grey[/name_u]. Awesome name.
I’ve always loved [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] for a girl and always planned to use it (but my husband dislikes it and it wasn’t worth it IMHO. I’ve also met several male [name_u]Dakota[/name_u]'s and think it can really work on either gender without hiccup. [name_m]Koda[/name_m] would make a cute nickname, but I would go with a more formal name in this instance ([name_u]Dakota[/name_u]!).
I would advise against using the name of a Native American tribe as a given name. Many Native Americans find the use of [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] as a given name to be highly inappropriate and disrespectful. Additionally, [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] is a plural noun meaning “the allies” in the language of the [name_f]Sioux[/name_f] people. It’s like naming your child Americans or Mexicans. [name_m]Koda[/name_m], however, is appropriate as a given name. I would recommend you stick to [name_m]Koda[/name_m].
I know both a male and female [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] and both wear their names well. The female [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] often goes by [name_u]Kody[/name_u]/[name_m]Koty[/name_m] so I think [name_m]Koda[/name_m] would work well as a nn. Best of [name_m]Luck[/name_m].
[name_u]Dakota[/name_u]'s been used pretty evenly for both genders - 1,136 girls last year, 876 boys - and people have been hearing it on either for years now. So I don’t think you have to worry about whether it’s a boy or girl. And [name_m]Koda[/name_m] is just one syllable off, so I don’t think people would raise their eyebrows at a female [name_m]Koda[/name_m]. I mean, we have female Charlies and Wyatts now. You’re pretty much golden.
