Dakota means “allies, friends”, and I find that really nice. I really like this name for a boy and I find it really handsome in a cool masculine way. What do you think of the name?
I like the sound and think of it as a place name but because it’s a Native American tribe name it is controversial and you will likely meet people who think it’s offensive to use it. For that reason I wouldn’t use it on a child because I wouldn’t want them to have to deal with that their whole life.
This is my husband’s name. He wears it just fine lol. The meaning suits him well; he can make friends with almost anyone. I find the name handsome, friendly and rugged.
As far as what he had to deal with, it is very minimal. Some people think of [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] Fanning and assume by his name that he is a girl, as well. He also gets called [name_u]Kody[/name_u], which he despises. That’s it.
I’ve always loved the sound of the name!!!
Knowing about how much discrimination Native Americans face (and have faced in the past), I would not use this name. [name_m]Just[/name_m] my opinion.
It is a nice name but I’d probably second this
This is what [name_m]Macaulay[/name_m] Culkin just names his daughter so he’s the imagery that comes to mind.
I would steer away from [name_u]Dakota[/name_u] for the reasons other berries mentioned about appropriating indigenous culture!
