I know a girl with this name, she pronounces it [name_m]Daw[/name_m]-mar-eese. I think it’s really pretty! Though it seems like one of those names where a parent can choose how they want it said.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] a belated word on this – sorry for being so late to the party!
I've always assumed duh-[name_f]Mare[/name_f]-iss, rhyming with [name_f]Maris[/name_f] ([name_f]Mare[/name_f]-iss). [name_f]Do[/name_f] you remember the TV series "[name_m]Frasier[/name_m]" in which [name_m]Niles[/name_m]' wife [name_f]Maris[/name_f] was often mentioned (although she never appeared as an on-screen character)? . However, I don't remember ever having met anyone of that name.
It wasn’t until I recently had heard an audiobook narrator pronounce it Damm-uh-riss that I then wondered if I had always been wrong. Like you, Freddiethepink, when looking around on the net now, others’ answers seem to fall all over the place. Different syllables are stressed, different vowel pronunciations. About all that’s uniform is that at least they all start with a ‘d’ sound1
I have met two women named [name_u]Damaris[/name_u]. One was from Western Europe, and pronounced her name dah-muh-[name_u]REESE[/name_u]. The other, from the northeastern US, pronounced her name duh-[name_f]MAR[/name_f]-iss. (the [name_f]MAR[/name_f] prounounced kinda like Kar in [name_f]Karen[/name_f]).
I prefer the former. It’s always been a favorite of mine, though I’d never use it myself. I swoon when I hear it pronounced the first way.
My natural inclination is duh-[name_f]MARE[/name_f]-iss, but all of your suggestions make sense. I like the ones with the mar emphasis as opposed to the duh emphasis.
The only person I have ever met named this pronounced it duh-[name_f]MARE[/name_f]-iss. I think any of the pronunciations is probably acceptable though. I really like the above poster’s suggestion of [name_m]Daw[/name_m]-mar-eese. [name_m]How[/name_m] beautiful!
I have loved this name for a [name_m]LONG[/name_m] time and have always wanted to know the correct pronunciation too! Personally I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it pronounced “DA-mah-ris” like the BEAUTIFUL word “Damask”, which in Australia is pronounced “DA-mahsk”! My pronunciation is supported by this website:
