Dane for a girl?

I like the name [name]Dane[/name], but it is typically male. I think it could be cute on a girl. What are your thoughts and does it remind you too much of a Great [name]Dane[/name]?

I’ve heard of girls named [name]Dane[/name] but they spell it [name]Daine[/name]. I guess this spelling would get rid of the Great [name]Dane[/name] connection but it still would sound the same. Since [name]Dane[/name] is a nationality, it doesn’t appeal to me as a first name for either gender. It would be like naming your child American or English. :). Have you thought about choosing it for a middle name?

I do like that spelling. Plus, if its read before someone meets her, they’ll suspect female over male with the alternate spelling. [name]Daine[/name] would make a cute middle name actually; thanks for the suggestion!

No…not attractive at all. If you like it, possibly use it as a nickname for [name]Diane[/name] or [name]Diana[/name] or something similar. Also…Great Danes are my favorite dogs.

[name]Dane[/name] reads completely masculine to me - in a strong, almost butch way.

Sorry, [name]Dane[/name] is very male to me.

I think if you use it, it should be as a nickname, with a more feminine name as backup if that suits her later. In addition to flick’s suggestions, I think [name]Dane[/name] could work as a nn for [name]Danielle[/name] or a variation.

Not attractive at all. A [name]Dane[/name] is someone from Denmark.

I associate this name with men, Great Danes, and the nationality. Not my cup of tea, esp. on a girl.

I really like this name but only for a guy. I have known several in my life, all male, all spelled differently. [name]Dane[/name] [name]Daine[/name] [name]Dayne[/name]. I like all the spellings but [name]Dane[/name] is the one I like best because it’s the spelling I knew first. I never really gave the doggy breed much thought but if it bugs you the other spellings would probably be better. I would suggest using Dana for a girl. I think it’s just as cute and is more widely used for a female.

Sigh. Once again: No. [name]Just[/name]…no.

[name]Dane[/name] is all boy to me, I don’t see a feminine thing about it. I find it very unattractive.

I automatically thought dog when I read the name and thus don’t like it on a boy or girl

[name]Dana[/name] is really pretty & underused imo.

[name]Dane[/name] in the middle with a femme first isn’t bad.

And I see this as technically unisex…but so is [name]Joy[/name] and it would feel’off’ on a boy

I think [name]Dane[/name] [name]Mary[/name] (or any middle) sounds like Dame [name]Mary[/name] so it doesn’t flow well in a double name the way some surname type firsts do.

Thanks for the opinions! Very helpful before making such a huge decision. We only have 5 weeks to go and just can’t agree on anything!
