Daphne....What's your instant reaction?

that’s a good point. I doubt kids these days know about daffy duck. I think the nn Daph is the most common by far. And the scooby do thing, eh, I doubt it will be a big deal. And as PP have said, she’s a cool character. It’s a pretty, classic and underused nature name. She goes from number one to number two on my list, but in the end, I think she’s a real winner and this post has gotten her back to number 1!

Scooby-Doo is definitely my first thought but I don’t think that makes the name unusable. It’s also a Greek mythology name, so I think that evens things out.

instant reaction, no offense, is: pet’s name, and [name]Frasier[/name]. but… i think i could get over those thoughts. it’s just what comes first.

I hadn’t heard the “pet’s name” reference before, but I appreciate the feedback. I had [name]Sophie[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] on my list. [name]Sophie[/name] is now out because of a cousin, but that’s what everyone said about those names too…and [name]Bella[/name]. I know lots of little [name]Bella[/name]'s too though, so no biggie for me!

[name]Sylvie[/name] might make a nice [name]Sophie[/name] substitute. [name]Just[/name] sayin’.

[name]Daphne[/name] is a winner. I’ve recently fallen in love with this name too. I think it’s cute yet classic, and I can imagine a woman of any age as a [name]Daphne[/name], from a baby to a teen to middle aged. it is especially cute on an old woman.

[name]Daphne[/name] is a gorgeous name and definitely on my list! I didn’t watch Scooby-Doo or [name]Daffy[/name] Duck as a child, so my introduction to the name was as a character in this lovely children’s book…I forget the name. [name]Daphne[/name]'s Book? [name]Daphne[/name]'s [name]Story[/name]? It was good regardless.

Overall, I think it’s classy, British, feminine, artistic, flowery, ethereal and somehow, surprisingly earthy and attached. Suitable for all ages. I really can’t see how you can go wrong (unless you spell it wrong).

[name]Henry[/name] and [name]Daphne[/name] make a GREAT sibset as well!

I immediately think of Scooby Doo and the ties to Greek mythology. However, as a little girl, I would have LOVED the name [name]Daphne[/name] because she was my favorite member of [name]Mystery[/name] Inc, so I have no oppositions. It’s such a good name, I’m shocked I haven’t heard more of it.

I like [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Lucille[/name]. I think it’s a perfectly lovely name.

I have an older cousin named [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Lillian[/name]. For my whole life, I have never once called her by her proper name. When I was a kid, my fam. called her [name]Daffy[/name] Duck, then [name]Daffy[/name] and now it’s mostly just Duck.

That might be an association you should be aware of.

@tina91 Ooooh, that’s something I definitely wouldn’t let happen in this family. I don’t think my husband would either. Some of them tried to pull that with calling our [name]Henry[/name] “[name]Hank[/name].” My husband retorted by coming up with other names for their kids and when we got a cat, we told them a lil white lie and said that the cat’s name was [name]Hank[/name], so we definitely couldn’t call [name]Henry[/name] that. It stopped!

i do know lots of pets named [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Bella[/name] these days! i think that might hold me back from using both even though they are both very cute names. half the little girls we know these days are named [name]Sofie[/name], [name]Sophia[/name], and [name]Madeline[/name], i think literally half, so I still associate [name]Sophie[/name] with children. to be perfectly honest, my first name is [name]Jasmin[/name], and for at least 10 years of my life when i told people my name, the response was, “oh, i know a dog named [name]Jasmin[/name].” not kidding. i still like it though, so i don’t think it’s a deal breaker… personally i prefer [name]Della[/name], [name]Delia[/name], and [name]Dahlia[/name] to [name]Daphne[/name], but i also think [name]Daphne[/name] is a lovely name and if you love it you should use it!

I love [name]Daphne[/name]! [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] is gorgeous… [name]How[/name] about [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Lois[/name] ?
When I think of [name]Daphne[/name], I think of the British character from [name]Frasier[/name], [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Moon[/name], which just reminds me of how cool and quirky it is!

bump

Its a wonderful name, but I instantly think of the character from scooby doo and the color purple.

[name]Daphne[/name] has made it back to number on one my list. I figure, if u never let the nn daffy happen, then it won’t. Worst comes to worse she will get some teasing in elementary school. No biggie. Daph is the most common shortening. If I heard someone with the name [name]Daphne[/name], I would think that their parents have good taste in names.

[name]Do[/name] u like the name dahlia? I find it similiar to daphne

Not to sound like my husband, but [name]Dahlia[/name], I immediately associate with that film, “The [name]Black[/name] [name]Dahlia[/name]” and the murder case, so I could never use that personally! [name]Silly[/name], I know. For other people though, I think [name]Dahlia[/name] is a charming name and I would think that they have good taste also. I just couldn’t use it for me.

Yeah I agree. The whole black dahlia thing really puts me off to that name. [name]Daphne[/name]'s associations are waaaay better. It a subtle nature name, I love it :). It always makes it to the top of my list. No hoer name compares. For me personally it has everything I’m looking for in a name. So I think you should go for it

My coworker had a baby named [name]Daphne[/name]. They nicknamed her Finny. They love it.

Never even thought of the nn Finny, that is soooo cute! I love it for an occasional nn. I guess the most common nn is Daph, so I would probably call her [name]Daphne[/name] with the occasional Daph for short, and Finny for fun! <3

I like it. I immediately think ‘mod’ for some reason (even though I think [name]Daphne[/name] feels older than that), but it is one of those so vintage it’s fresh names. I also think of “Some Like It Hot”…[name]Jack[/name] Lemmon’s character goes by that name when he dresses up like a woman. He’s supposed to be [name]Geraldine[/name] but always loved [name]Daphne[/name] so uses it, lol. I love that movie though so it’s not a negative association for me.
