Daphne....What's your instant reaction?

As a first name. What is your immediate impression? Thinking [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] or [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Lucille[/name], or maybe something else. But, if you were to meet a little [name]Daphne[/name], what opinions would you immediately form?

Thanks!

What a wonderful name! Surprisingly underused. Absolutely charming.

[name]LOVE[/name]! [name]Lovely[/name], underused, sort of british and sophisticated yet friendly at the same time.

[name]Love[/name]! Always a little sad that I can’t use it b/c I already have a [name]Phoebe[/name]. I think I like [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] for the quirk factor.

Scooby Doo? That’s what I associate it with. Oh and and a duck. Like [name]Daffy[/name] duck? I’m not partial to the name. I don’t like the -hne on the end for some reason.

Honestly, my first reaction is the nn [name]Daffy[/name] and [name]Daffy[/name] duck :(. I also love this name, but I don’t think I could ever use it because of that. Also, I don’t watch scooby do, but people that do, for some reason, automatically make that connection. Drats! The name has drawbacks, but if you love it, I would still use it. It’s an underused classic, a real gem. I go back and forth with this name. My Dh loves it, as does my family. But I don’t know, I have reservations…

Personally, I don’t mind the Scooby Doo connection. [name]Daphne[/name] was cute! It’s kind of a retro factor. Anyway, I have noticed a lot of Daphnes popping up on tv and movies, so I think our kids’ frame of reference will be a bit more diverse than that singular character. As for the ‘daffy’ thing, who says ‘daffy’ anymore? Most children probably don’t even know what that means! [name]Daphne[/name] is an ancient name with much more dignity and class than these minor connotations.

That’s true, [name]Daphne[/name] IS definitely popping up on TV shows these days. On the new show Switched at birth, there is a daphne. So it’s very promising that most kids won’t even know of daffy duck. They do still watch scooby do, however, like the pp said, it’s popping up everywhere these days, so kids will have other references for the name. Adults (your friends) might always thing of daffy duck and/or scooby do, but that’s not such a big deal. Your DD will be the one they think of first :-). Like I said, I also have my reservations with the name, I go back and forth with it.

[name]Lovely[/name] classic and yes underused. I love [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name]

I do think of Scooby Doo, but [name]Daphne[/name] was “cool” on that so it’s a good and yes retro association. I didn’t think of [name]Daffy[/name] Duck at all.

[name]Lovely[/name] name! And [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] is such a beutiful combination!

Exactly what she said.

[name]Lovely[/name] name! It’s on my for fun list. (I have lots of lists, lol!)

Oooh, I am happily excited to hear so many positive responses to this! Any input please keep it coming. I really appreciate your opinions and want to share them with my husband. I have to say the name wasn’t the top of my list before, but it’s a name that’s always been on my list and one I’ve appreciated because it seems like it could fit diverse characters (could be a cute, quirky girl, a tomboy, a girly girl, artistic girl, etc), is a bit quirky, retro and underused. When my 2 and a half year old son [name]Henry[/name] started telling me that’s what he wanted to name baby sister, it’s made my heart melt for it and I love hearing him say it. My husband isn’t keen on it, but I’m hoping he’ll realize people just don’t think Scooby Doo when they hear it. I think lots of things. [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Du[/name] Maurier, pre WWII [name]England[/name], its meaning of laurel, etc. [name]Glad[/name] to know it’s not just me!

So pretty. [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] is gorgeous.

I will admit at first I didn’t much like the name because of the “Scooby Doo” connotation but now I love it… It is cute, playful, and ages well, everything you could hope for in a name. I also loved how you brought up how the name fits girls with various personalities… You are absolutely right! Also, [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] (NN [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Bea[/name]) is too cute for words… a perfect pairing of names!

I’ve always loved it! I once named a co-worker’s orchid [name]Daphne[/name] because it reminded me of something elegant yet down to earth (same as the name [name]Daphne[/name].) [name]Just[/name] don’t change the spelling! A couple I attended college with recently named their daughter [name]Daphney[/name]. Uggggghhhh! Seeing that spelling just made my skin crawl!

I love [name]Daphne[/name]! When I suggested it to my DH he immediatly thought “daffy”, so everyone will have different opinions. However, it’s a lovely name and if you love it, other people’s opinion’s shouldn’t matter!

I think of an upper class British woman when I hear the name [name]Daphne[/name] (I think this name has been used a lot more in the UK - I know I have seen the name in a number of books written by British authors). I think it’s an elegant and sophisticated name and if I met a little girl with it I would think her parents have good taste in names (unless they spelled it [name]Daphney[/name] or [name]Dafneigh[/name]:).

I guess I have never watched Scooby Doo too often because I didn’t know there was a [name]Daphne[/name] on there. I do think a little of [name]Daffy[/name] duck but it wouldn’t be my first thought (the only cartoon I ever watched regularly was the Flintstones). I associate the name a lot more with [name]Daphne[/name] du Maurier. I don’t think these references are strong enough reasons not to use the name. Today’s generation of kids may not have these associations anyway.

People may still want to call her [name]Daffy[/name] even if they don’t think of the duck. I don’t love that as a nn, but that’s really the only drawback I can see (if you don’t like that nn).

[name]Don[/name]'t worry! I would never dream of making up a “unique” spelling for [name]Daphne[/name]!

I showed my husband your comments last night and he may be seeing it’s appeal now. I told him to ponder it and come back to me with his feelings later. He may see that it’s not just a Scooby Doo name afterall and people do associate it with different things.

We have a 2 year old, [name]Henry[/name], and when I told people around here that was my boy name in my last pregnancy, we got a few of those “Ohhh…really?” or “Isn’t that a bit old fashioned?” remarks. I guess my husband got them this time as well when he was telling people [name]Daphne[/name] as well as some of the other names on our list ([name]Eliza[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Alice[/name]). I told him he should shop some modern names around (not that we would use one because that’s not us, but I bet he’d then get the ‘positive’ remarks, even if we weren’t to use one.) I can’t even count how many people suggested [name]Mackenzie[/name] to me when I was contemplating names. Not that it’s a bad name for some, but we just like that classic style. I think a lot of people in our area are just used to that. Although that being said, when I took [name]Henry[/name] to Gymboree the other day there were two little girls named [name]Rosemary[/name] and [name]Violet[/name] and a baby [name]Mabel[/name] so it’s not just me.

I really hope [name]Daphne[/name] will work out for us. I’m getting quite attached to it!

[name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Henry[/name] – great choice! I also love [name]Daphne[/name] and think both [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] and [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Beatrice[/name] sound absolutely lovely. Plus, I love that your son thought of it – that’s such a great story and lends it even more charm in my opinion.

It’s been so long since I’ve seen Scooby Doo that it’s not my first thought when I hear the name (my first thought is “What a beautiful, classic name!”), and I think any reference to [name]Daffy[/name] duck seems a bit like a stretch (maybe it depends where you’re located?). I knew a [name]Daphne[/name] when I was little and she was called “Daph” as a quick reference nn by her close friends, but mostly just went by [name]Daphne[/name], no nickname needed!
