I think that it’s a girl name…mostly because the only [name]Darcy[/name] I know is a girl, and besides, it rhymes with [name]Marcy[/name]…
I think of Mr. [name]Darcy[/name] from Pride and Prejudice, but I honestly can see it on a girl as well.
Saying [name]Darcy[/name] is a boy’s name solely because of Mr. [name]Darcy[/name] is like saying [name]Cyrus[/name] is a girl’s name solely because of [name]Miley[/name] [name]Cyrus[/name].
It’s all girl to me. I can imagine it on a boy but don’t prefer it.
I’ve only known one [name]Darcy[/name] in my life and it was ages ago so I don’t really have any connection with it.
No it isn’t. Nobody calls [name]Miley[/name] [name]Cyrus[/name] "[name]Cyrus[/name]"while Mr. [name]Darcy[/name] was always called [name]Darcy[/name].
I know a [name]Daniel[/name] [name]Charles[/name], nn [name]Charles[/name]. [name]Even[/name] though it’s his last name, that’s what he chooses to be called so he is “[name]Charles[/name]” just as Mr. [name]Darcy[/name] is “[name]Darcy[/name]”
Back in those times, people were often called by their last name. Mr. [name]Darcy[/name] had a first name. Last names are unisex, so I can think it can work for both, but to me it’s more feminine because I have only met girls who have the name as a first name.
[name]Jane[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name] were often called. Miss [name]Bennett[/name], so I think that’s flawed logic… He doesn’t choose to go by his last name, it’s just how the society worked back then. Mr. Bingley is also called Mr. Bingley. Same with Mr. [name]Bennett[/name]. First names were rarely used except among siblings.
It always floats around the top 100 for girls in the UK but with the other spellings; [name]Darcey[/name], [name]Darcie[/name], [name]Darcee[/name] it would definitely be well within the top 100 for girls. However, I prefer it on a little boy despite only ever hearing of one boy named [name]Darcy[/name].
I’d love to add [name]Darcy[/name] to my boy’s list but it’s a friends favourite for a girl.
[name]Jane[/name] & [name]Elizabeth[/name] were called Miss [name]Bennett[/name], never just [name]Bennett[/name]. Same for Mr. [name]Bennett[/name] and Mr. Bingley. My friend is not Mr. [name]Charles[/name], he’s just [name]Charles[/name]. Mr. [name]Darcy[/name] was called just [name]Darcy[/name]. See the difference?
Ironically, I just finished watching Pride and Prejudice about 5 minutes ago.
So right now it’s seeming all boy to me.
Yes, I have heard of girl [name]Darcy[/name]'s but it sounds more boy to me.
[name]Emilia[/name]
Mr. Bingley was also called Bingley from time to time. [name]Darcy[/name] was also called Mr. [name]Darcy[/name]. Have you read the book? [name]Just[/name] because they leave the Mr. off doesn’t make a difference. You were known for your last name back then. It was a matter of social status. No one went by their first name. Girls were always called Miss and Mrs to show who they “belonged” to, but men could leave off the Mr. from time to time.
Now a days some people go by their last name as a nickname. But it doesn’t relate to the past usage of the last name. They are two different things.
The whole idea of calling people by just their last names is simply a British “old boys club” thing.
If you’ve ever seen a movie set at an old boarding school you’ve heard it.
[name]Even[/name] [name]Draco[/name] in [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] calls Hermoine just “[name]Granger[/name]”. Using someone’s first name is more personal.
I’m not saying that [name]Darcy[/name] can never feel masculine, I’m simply saying that if your only argument for why it should be masculine is Mr. [name]Fitzwilliam[/name] [name]Darcy[/name] then your logic is flawed.
You should do a poll, lots of opinions and thoughts.
For me [name]Darcy[/name] is a boy.
[name_u]Darcy[/name_u] is so girl. Its adorable
[name_u]Darcey[/name_u] Bussell-So it’s a girl for me.
In my opinion it works equally well for both. I do prefer it as a first name for a girl, but I also adore it on a boy too. My SO vetoed [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] for a girl because of Mr. [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], but I’m going to try and make him see how gorgeous it is on a girl. There’s also someone on YouTube who has a daughter named [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], which is where I rekindled my love of the name, and what I think of first when I hear the name.
