Darcy: Boy or Girl?

[name]Do[/name] you prefer the name [name]Darcy[/name] on a boy or a girl? Your thoughts?

I prefer it for a boy, but would probably end up using it on a girl since I worry that people think it is too feminine.

I vote girl! I know a [name]Darcy[/name] who is female, and even with the whole “Mr. [name]Darcy[/name]” thing, I still think that for a first name it feel feminine.

I love the idea of it on a boy! [name]Darcy[/name] as a girl sounds very dated whereas [name]Darcy[/name] on a guy feels very literary cool.

I agree with googoogixie. I’ve only known one [name]Darcy[/name], a girl, but she was awful. It sounds so dated and bleh on a girl for me but on a boy it sounds very handsome and cool.

Prefer for boy, accept for girl.

I have read Pride and Prejudice at least 3 times…so I love the idea of it on a boy. [name]Even[/name] though my stepmother’s name is [name]Darcy[/name], I still love it for a boy

I like it for a girl.

I’ve only known one girl named [name]Darcy[/name]. She’s 18 now. I’ve never thought of [name]Darcy[/name] on a boy before so I don’t have an opinion yet.

[name]Darcy[/name] doesn’t sound at all feminine to me. It’s actually pretty harsh sounding, which is fine for boys but iffy for girls

I think [name]Darcy[/name] as a first name is better on a girl, but I really like [name]Darcy[/name] in the middle name spot for a boy. I guess that pretty much means I’m too much of a chicken to use it as a first name.

[name]Darcy[/name] is a boy’s name in my ears. Mr. [name]Darcy[/name] and all that. We plan on using it for a middle for [name]Baby[/name] if [name]Baby[/name]'s a boy!

I think it’s one of those names, a bit like [name]Rowan[/name], which is perfectly usable on a boy or girl. I slightly prefer for a boy but wouldn’t mind it on a girl.

I only ever met female [name]Darcy[/name]'s and all the [name]Darcy[/name]'s on TV I know of are female as well… the only male [name]Darcy[/name] I know is Mr. [name]Darcy[/name] from Pride and Prejudice. So to me it’s feminine as a first name.

[name]Darcy[/name] is all girl to me, but I think it makes a great middle name for a boy.

Definitely a boy because I love Pride and Prejudice and Mr. [name]Darcy[/name]! I’ve never met a [name]Darcy[/name] of either gender in real life. It’s one of my favourite names on a boy, and I also love his (almost-never-used) first name [name]Fitzwilliam[/name].

The only [name]Darcy[/name] I know is male and I much prefer it for a boy.

I’ve always viewed [name]Darcy[/name] as feminine, because it’s close to [name]Darlene[/name], which is definitely feminine. Yes, there’s the famous Mr. [name]Darcy[/name], he contributes to the masculinity of the name, but somehow, [name]Darcy[/name] was always more fit for a female, in my eyes. So, in short, yes, I prefer [name]Darcy[/name] for a girl.

[name]Darcy[/name] is actually one of the names that I think is cute on a girl, probably because I have only seen it used on girls. It would be cute on a boy as well though, I am just more used to it being used for girls.

Wow thanks so much for the opinions everyone

@essjay - I also have [name]Rowan[/name] picked out for a girl. Most seem to prefer it on a boy, but to me it is unisex and I love it for a girl.

YES, THIS. Okay, I’ve read Pride & Prejudice and [name]Darcy[/name] is just a boy name for me. It’ll never be anything else. But I know a girl named [name]Darcy[/name] and she, and everyone else who knows her, thinks I’m crazy for thinking it’s masculine at all. UM, EXCUSE ME. DID YOU [name]JUST[/name] CALL THE MR. [name]DARCY[/name] “NOT MASCULINE AT ALL”?
