I don’t really pay much attention to boy names (the ones I’ll use will most likely be family names anyway) but currently I’ve been crushing on ‘[name_u]Darcy[/name_u]’ after re-reading Pride and Prejudice. However, I know that [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] has become unisex lately so I was wondering if it might be more skewed to being a girls name? Also, what middle name would you use with it?
I actually had no idea it was unisex until I saw it on NB to be completely honest aha. It’s very masculine to me, and I don’t think the fact that some see it as feminine to turn you off it. Femininity is not a bad thing.
[name_u]Darcy[/name_u] is on my list. I find it very handsome. Though I suck at middle names.
I’ve known 2 [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]'s in my life, both girls, so it does skew feminine to me just based on experience. It doesn’t feel girly or anything, but I don’t know–feels similar to [name_u]Jody[/name_u] to me.
I’ve never heard of a boy named [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] – only girls. There is Pride & Prejudice, as you point out, but [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] isn’t his first name – it’s [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m]. I like it for a boy but I wouldn’t be brave enough to use it, at least not in the U.S. where I consider it firmly entrenched in girl territory. I think said little boy would be in for a lot of teasing, the appeal of his Austenian name sake notwithstanding.
I have never viewed [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] as unisex, it’s all boy to me! Despite NB’s love of it on girls it just feels masculine. So I love it on a boy and have actually considered using it I like [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]. I feel like it works well with longer, regal sounding, masculine names.
I was curious so I looked at the social security list-- 12 boys were named [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] in 2014 (this is compared to 183 girls). But apparently there were also 12 boys named [name_f]Emma[/name_f] last year… so… yikes for those poor little guys.
I’m in Australia and I’ve never met a female [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] only a handful of male ones. I think we’ve got less of penchant for giving unisex names to girls over here. I think it is a masculine sounding name and I quite like it on a boy!
I’ve never met anyone named [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], so my only association is Pride & Prejudice. I don’t see anything feminine about it. [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] isn’t popular enough to claim it as a ‘girl’s only’ name. It’s a surname so to me that means masculine.
And I ignore the ‘it’s his last name’ excuse about Mr [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]. For all intents & purposes, his name is [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]. If someone is called by their surname or middle name or nickname 90% of the time, then that is their name.
I know one girl darcy, and one gender non binary darcy (who changed their name into darcy from another really beautiful name). actually I also know a boy darcy. So I guess it covers the whole spectrum, which in my opinion it’s a great thing
I love [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]. I tried to get my hubby on board, but he didn’t care for it. I have only ever met one [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] and it was a guy. The name seems masculine to me, thanks to Mr. [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]. I have never met a female [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]. Although I do remember [name_f]Helen[/name_f] [name_m]Hunt[/name_m]'s character in What Women Want was named [name_u]Darcy[/name_u]. The American statistics of the name usage for 2014, kind of bothers me and would possibly deter me from considering the name even if hubby was game. I live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and naming trends tend to be somewhat similar. But in truth, the name is used so little, I am not sure if it really matters than more girls were given the name than boys.
I know only one [name_u]Darcy[/name_u], a woman in her early 30s. It’s a great name and it works for a boy or a girl, man or a woman. Highly recommend!
Hmm there seems to be some mixed feelings. I live in Australia and [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] isn’t a very popular name for boy or girl, but I know a child (boy) called [name_u]Darby[/name_u], which I think is a similar unisex name that is masculine to me. Either way I don’t think the femininity of it bothers me that much, just like how [name_u]Alex[/name_u] is equal between boys and girls.
I love [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] on a boy, but I can see why it would be skewed towards the girls: it’s got the popular Dar sound (like [name_f]Darla[/name_f]) and the -ee ending). I think the [name_u]Austen[/name_u] reference is amazing, but I think most people (especially in the USA) would find it feminine. I’ve always thought that using [name_m]William[/name_m] would be a good honor for [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] (since he’s a pretty awesome character), as his name is [name_m]Fitzwilliam[/name_m] (I don’t like the [name_m]Fitz[/name_m]- sound and I think [name_m]William[/name_m] is more subtle). It’s a shame though since [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] is so cute on a boy!
