I was talking to a friend about names and they were talking about how difficult it is for them to find names that they like and could use in real life. They’re what I like to call darkly inclined, she likes the ookies and the spookies. They enjoy horror movies, heavy music, wear all black and things like that. The difficulty comes with finding names have that have a dark feel but aren’t cliche or too much to use for a real baby. [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] are all we’ve found for her, so I’d love to hear what names you’d suggest!
Names that are a NO
-Too tied to a character:
[name_f]Wednesday[/name_f]
[name_u]Raven[/name_u]
[name_m]Casper[/name_m]
[name_f]Elvira[/name_f]
[name_f]Samara[/name_f]
-Demon names
[name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] and the like
I’ve always felt [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] had a sort of darkness to it.
I feel the same way about [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] and [name_m]Creed[/name_m].
You’re right. I think [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is fine bc the rebellious/banished first wife aspect is whats more commonly known, at least where we are, the baby eating demon thing not as much. it’s also reminiscent of names like [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], and [name_f]Lilliana[/name_f], so I don’t think it would shock people as much as [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] would.
I see [name_u]Salem[/name_u] suggested already, which was my first thought although maybe slightly on the nose. Along that vein, [name_u]Sable[/name_u] could work too?
[name_u]Dark[/name_u] Names that make me think of [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] rather than [name_u]Raven[/name_u] or Wednesday…
Here are the names that Ive come up with. Some aren’t specifically “dark” but, to me, may have an elegant drama to them that makes them still fit.
Other unique names listed may have been because of their meaning or association to something “dark” qualifies them. I did not list those meanings but a simple name search should bring them up quickly.
Some of the names I think could work for either a boy or a girl, and sometimes were listed for both.
While i am not a dark or goth person, i really enjoyed this post and challenge. It lends room for a lot of creativity and originality.
