How do we feel about [name_u]Darren[/name_u]? Too dated? [name_u]Or[/name_u] ready for a comeback? What vibe does it give you? I think it’s actually quite a nice name with a great meaning but wonder if it would seem a bit outdated if used on a child born today.
Personally [name_u]Darren[/name_u] isn’t my cup of tea I think he’s a bit dated. I have this picture of a builder who catcalls women whilst working, has his bum crack on show and always has ketchup on his face following his full [name_f]English[/name_f] that he has every morning before going to work. His wife is called [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] and he lives in gravesend (an area in Kent) in a mid terrace house that’s has a leopard print theme to it. I know this is a very precise image but honestly every [name_u]Darren[/name_u] I know is a variation of this guy that I’ve described
Honestly I can see the appeal he has a laid back sound, easy to spell, feels familiar borderline nostalgic and the meaning is lovely but just not my thing.
Haha oh god your description cracked me up. I’m in the US so don’t have the same imagery but good to see perspective from another view I only know one [name_u]Darren[/name_u] and he’s a hockey dad in his 40s but very kind and clean cut!
[name_u]Darren[/name_u] is kind of rugged in theory, but I do think ‘middle-aged-man’ atm - I’m sure that would change if I met a little [name_u]Darren[/name_u], and I’d be pleasantly surprised
To me, it seems dated. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom grew up going to school with several of them, and she graduated high school in the 80’s. To me, it feels too recent and too much associated with that era that I have a hard time imagining it on a baby born soon.
[name_u]Darren[/name_u] Aronofsky , the director of " [name_m]Black[/name_m] [name_u]Swan[/name_u] " with [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] Portman (and recently " The Whale" ) comes to mind - I’m European so he’s my only association with the name and for that reason the name almost seems kinda artsy to me, although I know it’s an isolated view… But I think using " dated " names on little kids can seem a little boho or artsy in itself. I like the sound of it and the " dare " part like you do. All in all I see nothing wrong with it.
In my accent I pronounce this name DAA-ren with the short A as in cat (I also use this sound in [name_u]Gary[/name_u], [name_f]Karen[/name_f] and similar names). I don’t have the [name_f]Mary[/name_f], marry, merry merger. I’ve seen occasional use of [name_u]Darren[/name_u] to mean a male “Karen” but that is rare.
I’m not sure how it’s viewed in other countries, but in the UK it’s pretty dated in a 1970s/1980s kind of way. I remember meeting a woman through work who has a young son named [name_u]Darren[/name_u] (he must be around ten now) and the name struck me as sounding a bit ‘old’ for his age.
I don’t think there’s any particularly ‘wrong’ with [name_u]Darren[/name_u] but [name_m]Aaron[/name_m] sounds more timeless to me.
