Database entries you’d like to see amended

Yulia’s description says it’s Armenian but it’s listed as Russian

@katinka No worries. I’ve been there plenty. I’ll keep adding them as I come across them then as I’ve seen others before, but it never occurred to me until I did a specific search. Good luck getting the internet back up and running.

In [name_f]Bitsy[/name_f]'s entry, the last sentence is not necessary imo, or could be phrased better

[name_f]Niloufar[/name_f] itself isn’t used in Turkey, but variant Nilüfer is. This can be added as a small note, because I can see how it might be confusing.

I’d also like to add that [name_m]Chip[/name_m] and [name_m]Skip[/name_m] are fine for adults. I’ve known several people with one of these names and no one thought of them as children because of their names. In fact, I would strike everything off the description after and:

and then called some short form that seemed designed to keep them forever children: [name_m]Chip[/name_m], [name_m]Skip[/name_m], [name_f]Babe[/name_f], or [name_f]Sister[/name_f]. In case we’re not clear: [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t give your child one of these infantilizing names.

Under the name [name_f]Jemsa[/name_f], it rudely says: “One of the less euphonious of the international jewel cartel.” That’s sarcastic and insulting, especially when it’s not made up of any cacophonous sounds or anything.

I’d love to see new names added, but I would not like to see any entries amended. This is a name opinion website and I can handle different people having different opinions about names. [name_u]Freedom[/name_u] of speech, yeah?

Freedom of speech isn’t adding only insults to the “origin and meaning” section. I’m sure many people can decide what to and what not to name their children, a website shouldn’t say “don’t do this to your poor kid”. We want to see useful info there.

How dare you call out “freedom of speech” when people are trying to improve a RESOURCE so that it provides factual, objective information that is meant to aid them in making a huge decision? I hate when people do this; it’s disrespectful to the entire concept of freedom and language. [name_m]Just[/name_m] because you may have the privilege to say whatever you want, doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences to what you put out there, and also doesn’t mean you can’t constantly grow to be a better, more helpful, and less harmful communicator.

If the creators of nameberry have opinions on names, so be it. I’m an adult and I can figure out whether I like a name or not. Nameberry is not merely a factual website of name meanings; it’s a forum for opinions about names. A harmful communicator? Because something is a written about a name? Spare me.

I am proud of Nameberry for taking people’s feelings and feedback into consideration and improving the site for all. What an amazing world this would be if others did the same—always striving to be and do better. Having an opinion and being nasty are two entirely separate modes.

Also, you realize this is a website, and the forums are just a part of it, right? Because the main page literally says: “Nameberry is the world’s largest resource for baby names…” The definition of resource is: a source of information or expertise. I’m sure as an adult, you are aware, just wanted to remind you is all. Have a great, lovely rest of your weekend.

I won’t comment further than this as there is clearly no point, but I do need to say that this world has serious problems and how the opinions on a name website are written does not seem to qualify as one. Much on nameberry I agree with and much I don’t. C’est la vie.

It’s not about people agreeing or disagreeing with opinions, it’s about improving the language of the descriptions, which is what this topic is asking for. There was no need to click on this topic if you didn’t have an entry you’d like to see amended. [name_f]Every[/name_f] little thing, no matter how small, that can be amended and improved, makes this world a better place. One of the “serious problems” that we have in this world is when people use the “freedom of speech” argument to justify harmful language so that there are no consequences for it. If that could be amended, even by one person, it’s a step in the right direction.

this !!! there are forums and comment sections attached to countless online resources to allow for the reasonable exploration of opinions, but would you, if you were say perusing wikipedia, want to see the page author’s /opinion/ on a certain topic? likely not. you went there for the information.

also this one is not particularly egregious compared to others but i find it a little odd so i thought i would point it out anyway.

just jazzy dennis? this is a fairly common turkish name and it’s not even related to dennis lol. hmm…

I think the final line could be left off this description…

Hannelore’s description is very demeaning: “less than the sum of its parts.”

I don’t know if this is an amendment as much as it is a removal.

Opening Mara / [name_f]Marah[/name_f] brings up a 404 Error Message. We have separate entries for the two names. [name_f]Do[/name_f] we need this one or could we fully remove it from the lists and database?

This must be a really old entry, I’ve seen a couple similar. Yes, it needs deleting since the two names are now there separately.

Rebekah says that it’s the original spelling of [name_f]Rebekah[/name_f].

@skylerros I believe it is the original spelling, [name_f]Rebekah[/name_f] is a biblical name, she was the wife of [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]! That’s how it’s spelled in the Bible
