Declan too similar to Lachlan?

Is the name [name_m]Declan[/name_m] too similar in a sibset to [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]? We have a Lachlan Robert (middle name after his grandfather). Nickname for Declan would be “[name_m]Dex[/name_m]” which is a shortened version of a family name, Dexter. I don’t love Dexter. Declan is the only name my husband and I agree on. I love Callum but he is not on board. Middle name for Declan will likely be Martin or Frederick.

I think it works. They have the same ending but are still distinctive enough from each other and [name_m]Declan[/name_m] will have a nickname that isn’t at all similar to [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]. They’re a nice duo in my opinion.

I think it’s to similar. What about [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] or [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] instead?

I do not see anything wrong with [name_m]Declan[/name_m] and [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] as siblings. If you were to have a couple more, and name them with names ending in lan, that would be too much.

Personally, I think [name_m]Declan[/name_m] and [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] are far too similar for brothers, however, if [name_m]Declan[/name_m] is the only name you like and can agree on, and if he goes by [name_m]Dex[/name_m] more often than not, it could work.

Of [name_m]Martin[/name_m] and [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], I prefer [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] & [name_m]Declan[/name_m] ‘[name_m]Dex[/name_m]’ [name_m]Frederick[/name_m].

They both do have very similar sounds. I’d be disinclined to use them for brothers.

I think they are very similar together. But if you plan on using the nn most of the time, why not. One other name I can think of that could produce [name_m]Dex[/name_m] would be [name_m]Drexel[/name_m]…

I personally think they sound fine together. I am also in live with the name [name_m]Declan[/name_m]. It seems to be on the rise in popularity now. A name that I came across that was similar was Dexton if you were looking for something with a different ending, but in the same ball park.

It’s too matchy for my taste, but it’s not too similar to use for brothers, especially if you plan on using [name_m]Dex[/name_m] most of the time.

Other ideas: [name_m]Devereaux[/name_m], [name_m]Deacon[/name_m]

Not at all. [name_f]IMO[/name_f] they go well together.

I think the style is perfect together. They have the same end sound, but it’s not a deal breaker for me.

I think they go together nicely. My siblings’ names and my name all end in the same “-en” sound and no one has ever commented on it.

Why not use just [name_m]Dex[/name_m]? It would be a much more clear nod to the family name, without using [name_u]Dexter[/name_u]. My three boys all have names ending in -an and it gets really confusing, so I wouldn’t recommend. We ended up with the similar endings because after much agonizing, we decided that those were the names we truly loved the most. It may be the same for you, but I can tell you that the more similarities in the names…the worse it is for saying the wrong name or a kid hearing the wrong name.

My suggestion would be to use [name_m]Dex[/name_m] [name_m]Martin[/name_m] or [name_m]Dex[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. I think the shortened form is really handsome, and especially as that is the name he will go by. It is a short name but there are lots of perfectly acceptable short names that stand well on their own in the short form - [name_u]Kai[/name_u], [name_u]Drew[/name_u], [name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_m]Bram[/name_m]. Otherwise, [name_m]Declan[/name_m] would be fine too, as [name_m]Declan[/name_m] wouldn’t likely be used in full form often and [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_m]Dex[/name_m] are great together.

I love [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] [name_m]Robert[/name_m] is such a handsome name!

I agree with those that have said it is far too close for siblings. Honestly, right now, a close friend is considering [name_m]Declan[/name_m], when she knows [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is our number one pick and has been for a decade, and it irks me because it is so close! But at least they wouldn’t be brothers if we both had boys!

Sorry, I do think they’re too similar for siblings. If they just shared an “an” ending, (like [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_m]Nathan[/name_m]), I wouldn’t mind it. If they just shared a “lan” ending (like [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_m]Quinlan[/name_m]) I wouldn’t love it, but I wouldn’t take note of it particularly. But these share most of the same sounds/letters - both having “clan” at the end of their names and not much else to balance that out would be too close for me. That said, I don’t think it’s a crime against naming or anything, and I really like both of the names.

I agree that just using [name_m]Dex[/name_m] would be a clearer nod to your family while avoiding [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] and [name_m]Declan[/name_m].

I think so

They’re too close. I have a pet peeve about boy siblings having similar endings. I know it can be tough, so many boys names end in N. It just seems like the parents can’t think of anything else, so they use a name that is almost the same as the kid they already named.
You might like a name similar to [name_m]Dex[/name_m]:
[name_u]Lex[/name_u] ([name_m]Alexander[/name_m])
[name_u]Rex[/name_u]
[name_m]Fox[/name_m]
[name_m]Jax[/name_m] ([name_m]Jackson[/name_m])
[name_m]Dax[/name_m]

I think it’s a fine duo. Some friends of ours have a son named [name_m]Declan[/name_m] and when they had their second son they wanted to name him [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] but only chose not to because they knew a couple with a [name_m]Declan[/name_m] and a [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] already! I think the names sound different enough at the beginning that it makes up for the similar ending, plus they go well together as they’re both Celtic names.

Great name choices, btw! My little one is [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] (middle is after his grandfather too)!

Yes, I would say they are too similar.
