Still looking for our little girl’s name, and still working on finding one we both like. Two that are somewhat new to the list are [name]Delilah[/name] and [name]Scarlett[/name].
Regarding [name]Delilah[/name]… It’s not plain “[name]Lila[/name]” but we could use that as a nickname (I like [name]Lila[/name], just very popular). However, what’s the first association you have with it? I either think of the Biblical reference or the [name]Delilah[/name] from that mushy radio show. On the more positive side, there was that “Hey There [name]Delilah[/name]” song which was kind of sweet, and I like that it has a vintage-y sound.
As for [name]Scarlett[/name], most people’s first thought is [name]Scarlett[/name] Johansson. It’s not a horrible association, but not why we like the name. I loved the game “Clue” growing up. [name]Even[/name] though that might sound weird, I kind of like “Miss [name]Scarlett[/name].” Also has a kind of vintage sound to it. But one issue with [name]Scarlett[/name] is a NN… [name]Don[/name]'t want her to be called “Scar” but maybe “[name]Letti[/name]”? I don’t know.
I have the same [name]Delilah[/name] associations & I also dislike that song! I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Lila[/name] though. I’ve considered [name]Lilac[/name]. I think it’s gorgeous. Maybe you would like [name]Delia[/name] or [name]Dahlia[/name]?
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Scarlet[/name] but I hate the no good nn aspect of it. [name]Lettie[/name] works, but I don’t love it. Same with Scarlie, [name]Scarla[/name], [name]Leta[/name] (my fave, but still don’t love), and anything like [name]Red[/name] could work I guess. I think of O’[name]Hara[/name] before Johansen. Maybe [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Violet[/name]?
[name]Both[/name] names are very girly with a touch of drama.
We actually considered [name]Dahlia[/name], but there is a really entitled character on a tv show called Suburgatory that scratched it from our list! Really loving girly names, especially with a little drama Thanks for you response!
I agree that number of references to [name]Delilah[/name], the person from the bible would be going down, to what it would have been in the past. Though if you’re in the bible belt and around a lot of older people you may not hear much else! I think it’s a lovely name.
I also love [name]Scarlett[/name]. I think of either [name]Scarlett[/name] O’[name]Hara[/name], or like you “Clue”! I Loved the board game and have watched the movie more times than I’d like to admit! [name]Scarlett[/name] could be [name]Lettie[/name] or [name]Letta[/name], very easily. And, a nn doesn’t necessarily have to have anything to do with a shorter version of the given name. A lot of nn’s are even Somewhat similar to the given name but come about by a young family member trying to say the name (sometimes the child his/herself). That’s where my Teffie originated…young mouths trying to say Stephie. That also turned to Teffie-Weffie after a while.
I think of that song and I wouldn’t use the name because of that unfortunately. It is a pretty name, but the associations are still too strong with that song.
When I see [name]Scarlett[/name] I think of [name]Scarlett[/name] Johansson and pretty girls who are popular and kind of seduction I guess. It is also a pretty name.
[name]Delilah[/name] I think of the song (which I love). It’s a great name! The nickname [name]Lila[/name] is really pretty.
[name]Scarlett[/name] is one of my favorites because of Gone With the Wind. I don’t think it needs, or should have, any nickname at all.
I have a [name]Scarlett[/name] her nn is sky it actually works really well. I think of Gone With the Wind for [name]Scarlett[/name] and the Bible for [name]Delilah[/name]. They are both beatiful.
I think, “Hey, those are two of my all-time favorite names!” All the [name]Delilah[/name] associations that are out there come to mind if I think a minute, but my initial reaction is always just how lovely it is. [name]Scarlett[/name] reminds me of [name]Scarlett[/name] O’[name]Hara[/name] and Clue, two glamorous and exciting links.
My nns of choice are [name]Della[/name] for [name]Delilah[/name] and [name]Etta[/name] for [name]Scarlett[/name]. I’ve also heard [name]Carlie[/name] as a nn for [name]Scarlett[/name] – it’s buried in the middle, but it’s in there!
All the associations I have for [name]Delilah[/name] are negative. Not only the Biblical figure, but that song! (argh! I can’t stand it!)
As for [name]Scarlett[/name]? I think of O’[name]Hara[/name], and that’s not really a good thing. [name]Don[/name]'t get me wrong, I liked the movie Gone With the Wind, but I just thought [name]Scarlett[/name] was too vain.
I’m not really a fan of either name, because I can’t get over the bad girl associations with them. [name]Delilah[/name] from the Bible and [name]Scarlett[/name] O’[name]Hara[/name] were both very selfish, dramatic people.
With [name]Delilah[/name], I was aware of all of the references you mentioned, but none of them immediately jumped to mind when I saw the name.
With [name]Scarlett[/name], my first thought was Johansson, but that may have something to do with the fact that I just saw a film with her in it the other day.
I think both names are well-used enough that they aren’t defined by any single reference.
I think [name]Delilah[/name] is a pretty name and my generation would definitely think of the Biblical [name]Delilah[/name] but the younger ones are a bit clueless about Biblical things so I think they would just take it on its merits.
[name]Scarlett[/name] makes me think of Gone with the Wind.
[name]Both[/name] names are strong, feminine and perhaps a little [name]OTT[/name] for many.
I think both [name]Delilah[/name] and [name]Scarlett[/name] are appealing names because of their sound, but they both have negative associations for me. [name]Delilah[/name] in the Bible weighs in my mind more heavily than the cute song. [name]Scarlett[/name] reminds me too much of The [name]Scarlet[/name] Letter. : / I think a name similar in feel to [name]Delilah[/name] and [name]Scarlett[/name] is [name]Lola[/name], which, as far as I know, doesn’t have any negative associations.
