Was one my favorite names as a kid and I just started to consider it again: It’s a Greek mythology reference and off the top 1000, but I feel it’s right up there in terms of style with [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Cordelia[/name], [name]Imogen[/name], [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Hermione[/name]! It even has nickname potential: [name]Demi[/name], [name]Tira[/name], Metra? I prefer to spell it [name]Demetra[/name] myself, but I’m not opposed to the “i”.
Thoughts? [name]Do[/name] you know someone named [name]Demetra[/name]?
I prefer [name]Demetria[/name]- I actually have always liked the name, though I don’t like any of the nicknames for it. I don’t know anyone with either name.
Is [name]Demetria[/name] pronounced with the TREE-[name]AH[/name] at the end v. [name]Demetra[/name] just the TRA? Or are they pronounced the same? I like it without the i (either way… in looks and in the potential pronunciations).
I like [name]Demetra[/name] [name]Rose[/name] the best of your combos.
What about the name [name]Artemis[/name]? I love that one… (not for a combo tho too Greek and myth-y).
I pronounce it TREE-[name]AH[/name] vs. TRA myself, I’m not favoring one over the other though. [name]Love[/name] them both!
[name]Artemis[/name]? Hmmm…I like it, but it feels too gender-neutral to me, if that’s possible. I’d could do with [name]Diana[/name] though. I also associate [name]Artemis[/name] with the [name]Artemis[/name] Fowl books.
I’ve never known a [name]Demetra[/name] (I think this is the feminine version of [name]Demeter[/name]), but I’ve known two Demetrias, and I remember being very impressed by the name. I like both of them but lean a little more toward [name]Demetria[/name], personally. On the other hand, I’m not too big on the NNs for the name – this is one of those examples where I’d prefer the full name to the nickname. [name]Both[/name] the Demetrias I knew went by their full names. “[name]Demi[/name]” always immediately brings [name]Demi[/name] [name]Moore[/name] to my mind.
I like the name [name]Demetria[/name]! Very classy. [name]Demi[/name] is also a very cute nickname. It’s too bad that there’s a pop star with it, cause you’ll ALWAYS get the “Oh, like [name]Demi[/name] Lovato! (or maybe [name]Moore[/name])” Maybe Tria for a nickname? Not bad?
I’m really loving the spelling of [name]Demetria[/name], but I can’t help but first pronounce it [name]Demetra[/name] (Dem-ee-tra, not -tria). I do prefer the full name to nicknames but it’s good to know the options! Some days, you just needs something that’s not “hey you!” I think [name]Demi[/name] is my favorite nickname of the bunch; since I’m not thinking of putting a baby to the name for another decade, I don’t have to worry about associations with [name]Moore[/name] and Lovato, especially since I’ll most likely stick to the full name!
I really like the [name]Helena[/name] [name]Demetria[/name] suggestion! VERY [name]Shakespeare[/name]. More thoughts:
Bumping this thread…Almost three months later and I’m still madly in love with these names. [name]Even[/name] though I’ve flitted with other loves like [name]Nora[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Rosalie[/name], this feels like one of those right names that just are, you know? I also still haven’t decided which spelling I prefer but that’s okay by me.
Middle names are my problem, I just can’t find anything that seems to be right. All too long, too out-there, too common. Maybe Demetra Ariel? Any other suggestions?
I have a good friend named [name]Demetria[/name]. She goes by [name]Demi[/name] among friends & family. I would go for a single sylable mn, like [name]Demetria[/name] [name]Bliss[/name] or [name]Demetria[/name] [name]Rae[/name].
I agree, [name]Demetra[/name]/[name]Demetria[/name] are so many syllables and such a heavy name besides that she needs something short and whimsy to lighten her up. Maybe [name]Demetra[/name] [name]Ariel[/name]? I’m trying to avoid double -a/-ia endings.
My father is greek and called [name]Demetri[/name] so if I have a daughter her name would be [name]Demetra[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name](after my mother). In Greece the nickname for [name]Demetra[/name] is [name]Demi[/name], [name]Mimi[/name] or Demitroula(for a child) and [name]Demetra[/name] is prounounced [name]Di[/name]-mi-tra. I’m not a big fan of [name]Demi[/name]. It’s not just the name of an actress I don’t really care for but it means half in French and we have a French surname. I was thinking of Luli as a play on Demitroula. My name is Vasoula as in a nickname for Vasiliki and my brother used to call me Luli when we were small. It’s cute I think.
