Demigod Names?

I’ve got a few questions referring to naming some characters.

Main storyline: Three neighbours. Three best friends. Three demigods.
That’s what I’m going off so far.

Question 1: If you were writing a story about three teenage demigods, what would their names be?

Question2: What Gods/Goddesses would you choose for The Characters to be descended from?

Demigod1: Blonde hair with a ginger tinge, big blue eyes. Decsended from either [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] (goddess of beauty and desire) or [name_m]Poseidon[/name_m] (god of the sea). I was thinking naming her [name_f]Crimson[/name_f], [name_f]Crimson[/name_f] Fray, because I wanted her nn to be [name_u]Red[/name_u]. Any thoughts/other ideas for names?
Demigod2: [name_m]Light[/name_m] tan skin, freckles, green eyes and dark brown hair. Probably descended from [name_f]Athena[/name_f] (goddess of war and wisdom). Thoughts?
Demigod3: Not sure about appearance or who she should be descended from, although I was thinking [name_f]Hera[/name_f] (or possibly [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]?). Name ideas for her are [name_f]Leah[/name_f] and [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] so far. Any ideas?

I am Greek so hopefully I can help haha
Some Greek names:[name_f]Maya[/name_f]? [name_f]Maria[/name_f]? [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]? [name_f]Ioanna[/name_f]? Valia? [name_f]Electra[/name_f]? Iliada (or its variations)? Alkmene (Alkminnie)? Myrto?
Demigod1: [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] could give you the nickname [name_u]Red[/name_u]. I would give her a Greek middle name though. [name_f]Thalassa[/name_f]- literally the Greek word for “sea”, Corallia (from [name_f]Coral[/name_f]) or even [name_u]Ariel[/name_u] if she’s [name_m]Poseidon[/name_m]'s daughter. Maybe [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] if she’s [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]'s
Demigod2: [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]/[name_f]Sofia[/name_f], which means wisdom in Greek? [name_f]Danae[/name_f]? [name_f]Irene[/name_f]? Elpida nn [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]? I would use a spunky and/or unisex name for her other name like [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_u]Sage[/name_u] etc
Demigod3: If you want [name_f]Leah[/name_f] to sound more Greek I would make it the nn of [name_f]Vasilia[/name_f] (Βασιλεία). I would suggest a more “serious” name for her, something strong like [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]. A name with the nickname [name_f]Juno[/name_f], the Latin version of [name_f]Hera[/name_f]. Or, a name that means [name_m]King[/name_m]/[name_f]Queen[/name_f]/Ruler since she liked those kind of people

[name_f]Hera[/name_f] doesn’t have kids with anyone but [name_m]Zeus[/name_m].
[name_f]Sofia[/name_f] for Demigod 2.
I’m stuck on 1 and 3/

If I had to create three demigods characters I’d probably choose gods and goddesses that are less ‘popular’ or well-known to make it more interesting:

First Demigod(girl): platin blonde hair (shoulder length), dark blue eyes, tall with a ‘boyish figure’. Descendent of the Norse goddess ‘Nott’, goddess of the night. I think I 'd name her [name_f]Starleen[/name_f] [name_u]Tristen[/name_u] with the nn [name_f]Star[/name_f].

Second Demigod(girl): long, dark brown curly hair and dark brown eyes. Also tall but curvier than [name_f]Starleen[/name_f]. She’d be the descendant of Morana, the Slavic goddess of death and winter. Her preferred colour would obviously be black and she’d be the most powerful of the three and a bit of a drama queen. She can be quite cold hearted but if she meets like-minded people she’s nice. I’d name her [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] Ralitsa

Third Demigod(boy): He has short brown hair and bright blue eyes. He’s a descendant of [name_m]Zeus[/name_m] and he’d be the oldest of the three (about 25 years old) and would have a very strong personality. He’s intelligent and can read people very well because of that and knows who is bad or good. He loves rock music and is sometimes a bit of a badboy but he can also cook very well and he would probably fall in love with [name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] at some point. I’d probably name him [name_m]Teodor[/name_m] [name_m]Draven[/name_m] (because [name_m]Teodor[/name_m] is a Greek name meaning ‘gift of god’ (the god in this case is [name_m]Zeus[/name_m]) and a raven is a animal of the skies and [name_m]Zeus[/name_m] is god of the skies).

About your ideas, for the Second goddess I thought of:

[name_u]Dune[/name_u]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Clover[/name_f]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u]
Julep
[name_u]Penrose[/name_u]
Lidewji
[name_f]Charlize[/name_f]
Daylalynn
[name_f]Tanita[/name_f]
[name_f]Tiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f]
Kalyna
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f]

It depends if she really will the descendant of [name_f]Athene[/name_f]. If so I’d choose names that are a bit edgy like Foxglove because of of the war association. If you still need ideas I’d think that she could be a descendant of [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] based on her looks. If she’s a descendant of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] names like [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_u]Prairie[/name_u], [name_f]Luella[/name_f], Tiesa, Velvela, Odelynn or [name_f]Charlize[/name_f] come to mind.

If the third one is a descendant of [name_f]Hera[/name_f] might I suggest something like [name_f]Eva[/name_f], [name_f]Vera[/name_f], [name_u]Dagny[/name_u], [name_u]Blair[/name_u], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] or [name_f]Sabreena[/name_f]/[name_f]Breena[/name_f]?

For me [name_f]Crimson[/name_f] is a masculine name but if you like it you should go ahead
I like the name [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] for a descendant of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] and [name_f]Leah[/name_f] for a descendant of [name_f]Hera[/name_f]!

And sorry, this post is miles long but I underestimated my enthusiasm on this theme!

Demigod 1: I would do [name_m]Poseidon[/name_m] for her. Some names could be: [name_f]Cerise[/name_f], [name_u]Roan[/name_u], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Carmine[/name_f], [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u].
Demigod 2: I agree with the others that [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] is a good choice, I also like: [name_f]Euphemia[/name_f] or [name_f]Ismene[/name_f], if you want to go with the war route you have, [name_f]Ludovica[/name_f], [name_f]Marcella[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], and [name_f]Hedwig[/name_f].
Demigod 3: [name_m]Black[/name_m] hair and grey eyes? or maybe black hair and dark eyes?, she could descend from [name_f]Artemis[/name_f] (goddess of virginity, the hunt, and the moon) maybe? names could be: [name_f]Ivara[/name_f], [name_f]Inessa[/name_f], [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f], [name_f]Dorcas[/name_f].

Wow. Really helpful. Thanks guys!

Hiya!!

I love your idea, but you have to be very careful to make sure it’s distinct, as Greek mythology gets a lot of traction. It could be interesting to use minor/less well known gods as well - I’ve suggested a couple of similar deities for each. Maybe consider the Titans? Or [name_m]Roman[/name_m] mythology as an alternative? It’s fundamentally the same, but less well known/used. [name_m]Roman[/name_m] versions of Posideon, [name_f]Athena[/name_f] and [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] are [name_u]Neptune[/name_u], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] and [name_f]Venus[/name_f].

Demigod 1 - I love the idea of a character named ‘[name_u]Red[/name_u]’ being of [name_m]Poseidon[/name_m]!! Other water gods: Aegaeon; Amphitrite or Nerites (consorts of [name_m]Poseidon[/name_m]) [name_m]Oceanus[/name_m]; Triton.

Not a massive fan of [name_f]Crimson[/name_f] - it might be a bit to the point, and takes away from the blunt appeal of [name_u]Red[/name_u] as a nickname. [name_u]Red[/name_u]-related names include: [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]; [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]; [name_f]Poppy[/name_f]; [name_u]Auburn[/name_u]; [name_f]Ceara[/name_f]; [name_u]Rory[/name_u]/[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]; [name_f]Shona[/name_f].

[name_u]Flynn[/name_u] would be my favourite for her - but with Fray, [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] Fray or [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] ‘[name_u]Rory[/name_u]’ Fray sound good.

Demigod 2 - (NOTE - I read your description and assumed he was male! I’ve chucked in some female names too just in case ahah.) I like him !! If you wanted it to be related to [name_f]Athena[/name_f] in some way, her symbols are mainly olives; spears; owls and snakes.

- [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]/[name_f]Olivia[/name_f] (the olive tree) - I really like '[name_f]Oly[/name_f]' as a nickname.
- [name_m]Tito[/name_m] or [name_m]Otis[/name_m] (greek words for owl were ‘tuto’ and ‘otos’)
- [name_m]Phineas[/name_m] - “[name_u]Finn[/name_u]” (means mouth of a serpent in Hebrew; is also a character in greek mythology.)
- [name_m]Drake[/name_m] (means dragon/serpent)

- Owl/[name_u]Bird[/name_u] names - [name_u]Shannon[/name_u], [name_f]Jenna[/name_f], Eerin
- [name_f]Linda[/name_f]/[name_f]Melinda[/name_f]/[name_f]Linnie[/name_f] (means serpent)

These names mean ‘peace’ - an interesting link, as olives are symbols of peace but [name_f]Athena[/name_f] is a goddess of war. Might go well if you’re carrying the ‘opposite’ theme of [name_u]Red[/name_u] and [name_m]Poseidon[/name_m].
- [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u], [name_m]Calum[/name_m] or [name_m]Jonah[/name_m]
- [name_f]Irene[/name_f], [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], [name_f]Shanti[/name_f], [name_f]Idra[/name_f]

Notable places where [name_f]Athena[/name_f] was worshiped include Lucera ([name_u]Luca[/name_u] or [name_m]Luke[/name_m]); and as a goddess of craft and weaving ‘Kaltz’ ([name_m]Kal[/name_m]) or ‘Teller’ (both meaning weaving) suit.

OTHER WAR/KNOWLEDGE DEITIES: [name_f]Alala[/name_f], Enyo, [name_u]Nike[/name_u], Kratos, Coeus, Metis, Prometheus

Demigod 3 - firstly, [name_f]Hera[/name_f] is notoriously monogamous in mythology - she has no demigod children, and unless you make it a very important story point, I would avoid having a character descended from [name_f]Hera[/name_f]. [name_f]Leah[/name_f] I really like, [name_f]Alaska[/name_f] not as much. I do really like her as a daughter of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] - names related to beauty include - [name_f]Lana[/name_f]; [name_f]Ella[/name_f]/[name_f]Ellen[/name_f]; [name_f]Lily[/name_f]; [name_f]Adara[/name_f]; [name_f]Callie[/name_f] ([name_f]Calida[/name_f]; Callissa; [name_f]Callia[/name_f]); [name_f]Alina[/name_f]; [name_u]Keely[/name_u].

[name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] is related to doves; roses; apples; hares and youth:

  • [name_m]Melo[/name_m] (Greek for apple) - [name_f]Melonie[/name_f]/[name_f]Melanie[/name_f] - [name_f]Melina[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]; [name_f]Rose[/name_f]; [name_f]Roselyn[/name_f]; [name_f]Rosanna[/name_f]; [name_f]Roisin[/name_f]; [name_f]Rhonda[/name_f];
  • Meaning Rabbit - [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]
  • Meaning youth - [name_f]Lianna[/name_f]; [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]/[name_f]Juliette[/name_f].

My favourites would be [name_f]Callie[/name_f]; [name_u]Mel[/name_u] ([name_f]Melina[/name_f]/[name_f]Melonie[/name_f]) or [name_f]Lulu[/name_f].

OTHER GODS OF [name_u]LOVE[/name_u]/SEXUALITY: [name_m]Eros[/name_m]; Anteros; Potus; Himeros.

I really like the sound of your story! [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you enjoy it x

Thank you! I should’ve have probably said that all demigods are girls

Question 1: I think you should watch a children’s shows called Clash of the Titans, all the teens in that show are based on greek heroes and Gods and their names are derived as such, it might give you some ideas. For instance the character [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] is descendant from [name_m]Theseus[/name_m]

Question 2: There are a lot of really interesting Greek Gods, and [name_f]Demi[/name_f]-Gods that already exist, [name_m]Zeus[/name_m] was very fond of knocking up pretty humans. For instance you could try searching the stories of [name_f]Io[/name_f] and [name_f]Danae[/name_f]. Apart from that some Gods and [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] I find very interesting are [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] (seasons, queen of the underworld), and her stubborn Mother, [name_u]Demeter[/name_u] (harvest), [name_m]Hermes[/name_m] (messenger, trickster), [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] (music), [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] and [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] (were twins and therefore their children would have a greater likely hood of being twins, which could prove to create interesting characters). [name_m]Eros[/name_m] aka [name_m]Cupid[/name_m], [name_m]Dionysus[/name_m] (the party God of wine), Chronos (Time)…

Demigod1: I would make her descendant of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], as you can work the sea into it already. [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] was born when Uranus’ blood hit the Sea, she was conceived by the Sea foam, hence her name
APHRO(sea foam)DITE(deity). You is easily more related to the sea than [name_m]Poseidon[/name_m] who was not born of it but given it to rule by his brother [name_m]Zeus[/name_m].

If you wish for the nickname [name_u]Red[/name_u], the fact that her hair is slightly [name_f]Ginger[/name_f] may work just fine for that aspect. If not some more names meaning [name_u]Red[/name_u] include:
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_u]Clancy[/name_u] ([name_u]Red[/name_u]-haired Warrior)
[name_f]Garnet[/name_f] (A deep red coloured stone)
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f] ([name_u]Bright[/name_u] red flower)
[name_f]Cerise[/name_f] ([name_f]Cherry[/name_f] [name_u]Red[/name_u])
[name_u]Ruby[/name_u] ([name_u]Red[/name_u] [name_f]Crystal[/name_f])

However though the names for all your characters depend on who named them. Did they know they were [name_f]Demi[/name_f]-Gods from birth, did whoever named them know? If not their names would have nothing to do with their God status at all. If their namers were aware however, would they be named for the powers to which they wish them to possess? What happens if they don’t come out the way they expected. [name_f]Crimson[/name_f], named to be a fiery passion Demigod, takes on [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]'s ocean traits instead. This will really dictate what sorts of names you should be looking for.

[name_f]Hera[/name_f] was the protector of heroes, but she didn’t really have any other godly aspects or duties, aside from being [name_m]Zeus[/name_m]’ wife, and attempting to stop his constant cheating, so depending on what you want your [name_f]Demi[/name_f]-Gods to be capable of, she may not be the best choice.

I took Greek Myths and Legends at Uni, so I hope this was go some assistance, despite the actual lack of names hahaha.

Demigod 1: [name_m]Just[/name_m] a reminder that the Big Three made a pact about not having kids (not that it worked) but to be a daughter of [name_m]Poseidon[/name_m] she’d have to be born before the pact or after the [name_m]Titan[/name_m] war.
Names: [name_f]Mared[/name_f], [name_u]Adair[/name_u], [name_f]Danae[/name_f], [name_f]Audra[/name_f], [name_f]Delta[/name_f], [name_f]Calixta[/name_f]

Demigod 2: [name_f]Athena[/name_f] children usually have blonde hair and gray eyes if you want to stay in canon.
Names: [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], [name_f]Ismene[/name_f], [name_f]Alcina[/name_f], [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]

Demigod 3: [name_f]Hera[/name_f] doesn’t have children with anyone other than [name_m]Zeus[/name_m], fyi. You could maybe do a minor goddess like [name_u]Nike[/name_u], [name_f]Hebe[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], or Tyche.
Names: [name_f]Rheta[/name_f], [name_f]Thais[/name_f], [name_f]Acantha[/name_f], [name_f]Vasilia[/name_f], [name_f]Violante[/name_f], [name_f]Zosma[/name_f]

Thanks for all the awesome help guys!

One question: If I was to say that I wanted to name one of the characters [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], would this be weird considering that the character is a demigod, but isn’t decscended from [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] (the goddess)?

Any help would be appreciated

I just wanted to chirp in and say that [name_f]Hera[/name_f], [name_f]Hestia[/name_f] and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] didn’t have mortal children. [name_f]Hera[/name_f] was the goddess of marriage so she wouldn’t cheat on her husband and [name_f]Hestia[/name_f] and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] were maiden goddesses ([name_f]Athena[/name_f] was one too, but in most Greek inspired stories she has “brain children”: she concieves them on her own and they’re born through her head). You moght want to look into that because I think several goddesses were maiden- though like [name_f]Athena[/name_f] you can probably find a way if you really wanted to.
To answer you last question, I actually think it would be very fun! I can imagine lots of situations where she introduces herself and people think she is the goddess in desguise or her daughter and she has to explain she’s actually not related to her whatsoever and she’s just met with a ton of confusion and blank stares. It could get harder is the goddess becomes a character, but you could simply use a nickname for the girl and call it a day. I’d also be very clever I think for her to be the daughter of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], it would be nicely ironic. She’s named after a maiden goddess but she is the daughter of quite a… liberal one.
I wanted to add that Greek mythology is very cliche, in the sense that everyone writes about it. I get it, it’s fantastic and it’s one of my personal favourites, but I like the idea someone mentioned of them being from different religions/mythologies. Norse, Mayan, Egyptian, Hindi, Celtic… the world is your oyster on that regard. It could lead to interesting moments if they all come from different backgrounds.

Okay, so I’m also writting a story about demigods and I can’t decide on names. If you were to pick a name which one would it be and do you have any other names you would find better?

Demigod1: Boy: Personality: Courageous charming sly rebilous

Name Choices: -[name_u]Bryn[/name_u] -[name_u]Flynn[/name_u] -[name_m]Teodor[/name_m] -[name_u]Remy[/name_u]

  • [name_m]Alec[/name_m] -[name_f]Oly[/name_f] -[name_u]Tristen[/name_u]

His father is [name_m]Zeus[/name_m]

Please reply and help me think of a name. Thanks:)

Okay so I was looking at these name nothing popped at me. However I was thinking of [name_m]Gavin[/name_m] based on your choice of names. It means white hawk and I know [name_m]Zeus[/name_m]’ animal is an eagle so can go with a bird name again up to you. But I like [name_m]Gavin[/name_m].

@greythereadaholic, I believe the “Big Three” pact was only an invention of [name_m]Rick[/name_m] [name_m]Riordan[/name_m], to be used for his books, not in the original Greek mythology.

@bookwriter18: I was getting some ideas about names with the letter T or L for your character. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Theo[/name_u], [name_m]Tobias[/name_m]/[name_u]Toby[/name_u], [name_u]Tyler[/name_u], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_m]Timothy[/name_m], etc or [name_m]Liam[/name_m], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], [name_m]Leo[/name_m], [name_m]Levi[/name_m], [name_u]Logan[/name_u], [name_m]Landon[/name_m], etc for him?

@indilee: I second @mother_dragons; those goddesses were all maidens. It might be confusing if the character of [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] (the goddess) comes up in the story… people might get her and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] (your character) confused. However, what if [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] (the character) was a descendent or child of a god(dess) from a different culture? For example, a daughter of Yum Kaax, a Mayan god of the hunt? Actually, I really like that idea… maybe I’ll write something with cross-culture names/demigods…
