So, I went to this movie last night and was pleasantly surprised at the names chosen for the three girls: [name]Margo[/name], [name]Edith[/name] and [name]Agnes[/name]. [name]Even[/name] the Minions had names like [name]Phil[/name], [name]Mark[/name] and [name]Stuart[/name]. As soon as I heard the name [name]Agnes[/name], I immediately thought of Nameberry!
I apologize if there is already a post about this but, what are some newer children’s movies, books or cartoons that boast fantastic names for characters (under grandma-age)? It was really refreshing not hearing [name]Marleigh[/name], [name]Maddie[/name] and [name]Bella[/name].
I saw Despicable Me a few days ago, too, and was pleasantly surprised with the names. Actually, [name]Agnes[/name] has seemed more usable on a little girl to me ever since I saw the movie, and it’s really been growing on me! I found several great names in the credits, too. If only I could remember them all (I think there was a [name]Delphine[/name]…)!
I think that there are a lot of great names in [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]. Twilight, too, though I’m no fan of the series. [name]Percy[/name], [name]Grover[/name], and Annabeth from the [name]Percy[/name] [name]Jackson[/name] and the Olympians were unexpected, too. But none of those are exactly NEW… I also like [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Lavender[/name], and [name]Agatha[/name] from [name]Matilda[/name] and [name]Ramona[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name], and [name]Daisy[/name] from the [name]Ramona[/name] series, but those aren’t new at all…
It’s not a children’s movie, but Inception had a lot of interesting names in it! [name]Even[/name] watching it I was thinking that they were refreshing character names:
[name]Dom[/name]
[name]Mal[/name] (pronounced ‘[name]Moll[/name]’ because she’s French and it’s short for [name]Mallorie[/name])
[name]Arthur[/name]
[name]Ariadne[/name]
[name]Eames[/name]
[name]Phillipa[/name] (a little girl)
[name]Yusuf[/name]
They’re not kids either (except for the girl), and they weren’t older adults, but rather characters in their 20s and 30s.
I told my husband I wouldn’t be surprised if [name]Ariadne[/name], [name]Phillipa[/name], [name]Eames[/name], and [name]Arthur[/name] in particular get a baby naming boost from it.
I think they’re names that most people don’t think of, but once they see it in a movie in use on characters that they wouldn’t necessarily think fo with names like that, a light goes off (like in Splash with [name]Madison[/name] or such).
I loved their names! I hope this reforms a few more of the “old lady” names. If [name]Edith[/name] can be a spunky little girl in a fabulous pink hat, how long until [name]Edna[/name] can too?
I did see the name [name]Yarrow[/name] in the credits and it struck me as sort of masculine and cowboy-ish. Hmm…
More from [name]Percy[/name] [name]Jackson[/name] and the Olympians:
[name]Thalia[/name], [name]Zoe[/name], [name]Clarisse[/name], [name]Niko[/name] (boy), [name]Bianca[/name]
Also just read a book with three sisters names [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Henrietta[/name] and [name]Anastasia[/name]
[name]Alice[/name] in Wonderland! It’s an old story but a wonderful remake (I thought). Also, it was great that they all had older, British names like [name]Alice[/name], [name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Hamish[/name]!
Yeah, I’ve always hated the name [name]Agnes[/name] but after seeing that movie I’m starting to love it. And [name]Margo[/name] too. [name]Edith[/name] is also pretty cute. I just love unique names like those.
I just have to say that I nearly cried with joy when the name [name]Ariadne[/name] popped up in Inception! It was the most glorious moment. Also really liked [name]Phillipa[/name] and [name]James[/name] as siblings, super cute! And the really really sexy character [name]Arthur[/name], played by [name]Joseph[/name] [name]Gordon[/name]-Levitt, blew me away. I never thought of [name]Arthur[/name] as a really excellent modern name (plus it has such rich literary history!).
Inception was AMAZING just because of the actors involved. I nearly fell out of my chair when I realized [name]Fisher[/name] [name]Jr[/name] was [name]Cillian[/name] [name]Murphy[/name]. I’ve seen him naked many 'a time in 28 Days Later so I was having a moment during Inception. Then, the ever wonderful [name]Justin[/name] [name]Gordon[/name] Levitt. He makes [name]Arthur[/name] seem like the best name on the planet. [name]Phillipa[/name] I’m not too keen on myself but I [name]LOVE[/name] that it’s used in the movie. I also like [name]Eames[/name]. I didn’t even realize [name]Ellen[/name] [name]Page[/name] had a name. I was referring to her as [name]Juno[/name] at the end of the night. Name is pretty but seriously too complicated for me.
I thought [name]Ariadne[/name] was an amazing choice of name in Inception. [name]Ariadne[/name] is the mythological woman who helped guide [name]Theseus[/name] through the Labyrinth. I’d say there were same name nerds making that movie I always have mixed feelings when movies use names I love. I am happy for the name, but I always worry my name will get popular! I love [name]Ariadne[/name], and the nn [name]Addie[/name] or [name]Ari[/name].
I also love the names in Despicable Me, especially [name]Edith[/name]. Here I was thinking that name would never come back
INCEPTION was amazing all around, but I, too, loved the name choices. [name]Dom[/name] for the incredible Mr. [name]Cobb[/name], plus there was [name]Arthur[/name] (which I just love) and [name]Ariadne[/name] - which makes sense because they picked her up in South [name]America[/name]. [name]Yusuf[/name] and [name]Eames[/name] also made sense… and [name]Philippa[/name] and [name]James[/name] for the kids, oh. That made my night. :o)
Despicable Me: I loved the names of the three girls! [name]Margot[/name], [name]Edith[/name], and [name]Agnes[/name] were all fantastic. I’ve been considering [name]Edith[/name] for a while so I really hope it doesn’t take off because of the movie ([name]Edith[/name] was the least “girly” of the three girls so hopefully it will put people off!). I texted my boyfriend right away after the movie and he said maybe on all three. Boo.
I love reading books and its crazy how you really form opinions about names from characters…actuallly both my boys nicknames ([name]Anders[/name] and [name]Trent[/name]) came from book characters
I read the character list for [name]Ramona[/name] and Beezus and it has:
[name]Ramona[/name] (of course)
[name]Robert[/name]
[name]Dorothy[/name]
[name]Bea[/name]
[name]Willa[/name] [name]Jean[/name] (My heart is exploding for this name!)
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name] was wonderful:
[name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Harry[/name]
[name]Zinnia[/name]
[name]Agatha[/name] (hopefully her horrid character will turn people off of this name because I am in love with it)
[name]Magnus[/name]
I’m one of those people who adored [name]Nanny[/name] [name]McPhee[/name]. I mean, honestly, I’ll watch anything with [name]Colin[/name] [name]Firth[/name], [name]Emma[/name] [name]Thompson[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name] Sangster in it. [name]Love[/name], Actually anyone? Gotta love them Brits when it comes to names.
[name]Evangeline[/name] (fell in love with it during this movie)
[name]Simon[/name]
[name]Tora[/name]
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Eric[/name]
[name]Sebastian[/name]
[name]Agatha[/name]
[name]Christiana[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name]
The new one doesn’t have very many, aside from [name]Vincent[/name] and [name]Celia[/name]. I was definitely hoping for more.
Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events made me fall in love with the name [name]Klaus[/name]. I [name]LOVE[/name] it. I wish people could get away from [name]Santa[/name] [name]Claus[/name] and pronounce it correctly.
[name]Klaus[/name]
[name]Violet[/name]
[name]Sunny[/name]
[name]Justice[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
