Destiny

Let’s talk about [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] today.

I love the meaning of this, but I am unsure about the sound.

[name_f]My[/name_f] questions:

  1. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like it?
  2. Does it feel dated?
  3. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know how it became popular in the first place? It started rising in the early 90s. I am just wondering if there is some association or namesake.
  4. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you know of names with similar meanings? I can only think of [name_f]Serendipity[/name_f], which I like.
  1. It’s OK. Though tbh all i can think of is that scene in finding [name_u]Dory[/name_u] where the beluga tells the whale ‘its your destiny, destiny’ which is cheesy but again probably just me and not really a bad association.

  2. It does feel a bit dated. I would associate it with the ‘nee’ trend of the early 90’s like [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f], [name_f]Brittany[/name_f] and [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f].

  3. Again i would assume it just fit with the trends of the time. I don’t know if there was a reference or namesake that made it popular.

  4. [name_u]Lucky[/name_u], kismet, [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]

  1. I don’t like this name, actually. It’s a little too…used poorly? If that’s a thing?
  2. It feels wishy washy to me.
  3. Probably in the 90s people were still hopeful about the future? lol
  4. Only the names of the different fates from different lore come to mind or virtue names like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] “good fortune”!

Fates:

[name_f]Dalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Clotho[/name_f]
[name_f]Lachesis[/name_f]

Here in the deep [name_u]South[/name_u], [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] is primarily used for [name_m]Black[/name_m] girls and is spelled in a variety of ways, from Destiiny to [name_f]Destinee[/name_f] to Distanee etc.

It’s very common here. I prefer quirkier virtue names, like [name_u]Loveday[/name_u] and [name_f]Winsome[/name_f]. If you like the D/s sound, there’s always the Welsh [name_f]Dilys[/name_f].

I think it’s dated.

[name_f]Destiny[/name_f] is quite nice - it has a nice meaning and a mystical, arty feeling. It does feel like a heavy name to wear though.

I don’t especially like the name, both because it feels very 1990-2000 (it’s Miley’s real name for eg) and because I don’t like it’s self-proclamatory vibe. The [name_f]Destiny[/name_f] I knew growing up received a lot of sexual comments from guys along the lines of “You’re my Destiny” and it being a showgirl/sex worker name (in different language let’s just say). I’m hopeful we’re beyond that kind of grossness and these sorts of powerful word names are now more popular and mainstream (eg [name_u]Nick[/name_u] [name_m]Cannon[/name_m] & the Kardashian-Jenner kids) but I’d still be hesitant to use [name_f]Destiny[/name_f]. I’d be more likely to use [name_f]Serenity[/name_f], [name_u]Justice[/name_u], [name_f]Constance[/name_f], [name_f]Temperance[/name_f], [name_f]Grace[/name_f], [name_f]Hera[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_u]Honor[/name_u], [name_u]Liberty[/name_u], [name_f]Reverie[/name_f], [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], or [name_f]Winsome[/name_f].
