Dexter

This one is growing on me and I’m now thinking it may be my frontrunner. [name_f]Love[/name_f] the nickname [name_m]Dex[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] only issue is the TV show about a serial killer with the same name. Is this a major issue/deterrent? I otherwise absolutely love this name and the understated coolness of it (plus I like the jazz connection). Thoughts?

Back in my day the deterrent was Dexter’s Lab. I think there will always be some kind of pop culture deterrent for a lot of names. Some matter more than others, like [name_f]Ursula[/name_f]. Most will be forgotten in 10 years time. I think [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] is a cool name :sunglasses:

I don’t think it should put you off at all! If it was as popular and as enduring/as part of the
[name_f][/name_f]culture as say Friends or Seinfeld then maybe it would give me pause. But it’s no where near that well known (at least here in the uk) and
[name_f][/name_f]it won’t even be a reference for some people.

[name_f][/name_f]

There is a little four year old [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] (nickname Dex) in my wider family and no one has mentioned the connection to the show at all. None of the Boomers in the family had even heard of it! His name suits him so well, I think it’s great!

[name_f][/name_f]

Also, I think the character [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] from the Netflix show (and book) One [name_f]Day[/name_f], might come to mind first for people now, as it was very popular recently. Although he is flawed, he is a lovable character from an epic love story, so it’s a positive association:)

I love the name [name_m]Dexter[/name_m]. It definitely makes me think of jazz before serial killers. It has a kind of nerdy-cool vibe. I have met a handful here in the UK over the years but it’s always a fun one to hear in the wild!

[name_m]Dexter[/name_m] is cute, and I love the nn [name_m]Dex[/name_m]! I’m not familiar with the serial killer association, I get a playful jazzy sort of vibe from [name_m]Dexter[/name_m].

[name_m]Dexter[/name_m] is cool [name_f][/name_f]- familiar but not overused, rugged but smart. I’ve heard of the show but haven’t watched it and I’ve known a couple of Dexters so wouldn’t really think of it [name_f][/name_f]- plus, I think even if I had watched it, [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] is an established enough name that it doesn’t feel totally tied to one thing?

it’s established enough that people wouldn’t immediately think of it. also [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] isn’t that bad of an association it’s a good show

[name_m]Dexter[/name_m] was on our list for one of our sons’ names. [name_f]Love[/name_f] it! I wouldn’t let the show put you off it. The name itself has so much going for it.

I automatically think of the show, because I’ve never actually met someone named Dexter and also just finished watching new blood, BUT in my experience with the show being brought up in conversation, not many people actually know the show or what it’s about. It’s honestly not as recognized as it seems, so I think only the Dexter fans would immediately think of Dexter (like me) and even with the association it’s definitely a name where the association that can be easily separated from the reality of another person, and I think the reason it can easily be separated from the show (even to someone who knows the show) is because it’s not an overly unique name in the sense that only THAT character has the name, as opposed to something like Khaleesi, that is a type of name where it’s extremely hard to get past the reference when that name was only made for a specific character and people only started to name their daughters Khaleesi after game of thrones/ice and fire series came out, if that makes sense - and I haven’t even watched or read it.
Dexter is more like “I needed a character name and I like Dexter” it’s not made up for the show, they’re just choosing to use it.
I don’t think a lot of people will be hung up on the reference for this reason, even if they have watched the show, because it wasn’t made specifically for the show and since it is a fairly normal name used for a very long time but different people, so it doesn’t just apply to the character.
I’d be like “huh, I love the show Dexter so that’s cool” but I wouldn’t just assume you named them after the show so I’d brush it off and I think most other fans would too

I agree [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] is cool! [name_f][/name_f] The show and also Dexter’s Lab both deter me, which is why I like [name_m]Baxter[/name_m] more myself, but it is a very cool name and if I could get past the TV shows, I think I would love him a lot! [name_f][/name_f] I would be happy to meet a [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] that changes my mind, though!

In my opinion, I live where the show was and is heavily popular, with the new season just coming out now and the season that came out recent years after such a long break I personally would have strong and heavy associations with the show [name_f][/name_f]- as would the people in my area.

[name_f][/name_f]

With that said, [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] is a great show I dont think of necessarily as a bad association due to the storyline. Where I live itd be probably asked more times than not “is he named [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] because you loved the show?”. But, depends if that would bother you… I know other places the show isnt soo heavily popular, but I dont think he would go thru his whole life without ever being associated with the show.
[name_f][/name_f]I do think [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] is a lovely name though, I love the sound and nickname and feel of the name completely! I personally dont think I could pull it off, but I dont think itd be hard to pull off as truly it is a lovely name. I just have a more shy[name_f][/name_f] (for lack of a better word) naming style [name_f][/name_f]- which works for me and the show to me, where I live would be very in the face popular and I dont prefer such strong attention like that. :slightly_smiling_face:

[name_m]Dexter[/name_m] is a cool name (especially the nickname Dex) but I always think of villains/criminals when I see it (mainly based on the “villain” in the Penderwicks children’s book!)

I feel the exact same way! I love the name [name_m]Dexter[/name_m] and think [name_m]Dex[/name_m] is such a cool nickname. But I also always think of that TV show and am worried other people would too.

[name_f][/name_f]

I guess it depends on how much it would bother you if people responded “oh like that one tv show with the serial killer?” when you mention the name. If you’d just laugh about it then I say go for it! But if it would make you cringe and upset then it might be too strong of an association.
