I have had many naming opportunities with 7 children and I am very happy with all of them:
Hermione Elise - I had love Hermione since I was a teenager, not just because of the Harry Potter character but mainly just because of the way it sounded and I loved the nn Mimi (which my daughter goes by). I went for Elise to honour mine and DH’s French heritage. It wasn’t too common and sounded very elegant with Hermione. Luckily Hermione is Greek which honours my husband (who is half Greek/half French)
Ferris Jay - Ferris again was a love from when I was a teenager and this is mainly because of the film but it was also just such a cool name I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to use it. It also happened to be Irish which honours my heritage. Jay is an honour for my childhood friend (who’s name was Jay). He was, and still is, my best friend since the age of about 12 and when we went to college, he shared a dorm room with my husband and that is how we met and eventually married so it seemed like a fitting honour.
James Theodore: James is both an honour name for my grandfather and for my and DH’s Jewish faith as James is of Hebrew origin. Theodore was my husbands choice, he loved it and so did I and we decided on that very quickly.
Evangeline Hallie: Again Evangeline honours DH’s Greek heritage but it was also a name I had been interested in for years after watching Nanny McPhee as young adult. I never thought I was going to be able to use it but when I bout it up to DH, he loved it and I was of course happy and very surprised. Hallie was DH’s choice, I like it but its definitely something I would change if I had free will naming her. I was considering Lorelei, Ruth, Daphne, Skye & Molly, all of which he vetoed I was also considering Haley which for me is a different name but for my husband (who has a fairly Chicago accent) Hallie and Haley were pronounced the same - he just prefer the spelling of Hallie and the Parent Trap link. She goes by Eva.
Lucia Teagan: Lucy is a family name and it is a tradition that in there is a Lucy in every generation of children. My mother is Lucy Iris, my older sister is Rebecca Lucy and although I liked Lucy, I went for Lucia because it seemed just that little bit more interesting (but she goes by Lucy most of the time anyway) Teagan is again Irish which honours my heritage but it definitely wasn’t my first choice. Having Irish family, I am very used to seeing names like Maeve, Aoife, Saoirse, Caoimhe, Sadhbh, Roisin, Aine, Naimh, Siobhan & Mairead (all of which I suggested). but DH said that they had too many pronunciation issues and would be too difficult to use in the US (ironically, we are now moving back to the UK where there will be less issues but I still do love Teagan - an underrated gem)
Jonah Blake: Jonah honours our Jewish faith but was my husbands choice primarily. I do love it dearly but I was very sad not to have used my favourites which were all vetoed: Harry (sounds like Hairy in his accent and we already have a daughter Hermione), Jonathan, Atticus, Jeremy, Louis, Joshua, Cameron (Ferris and Cameron would unfortunately be too Ferris Bueller’s day off) & Jesse. Blake was a late arrival to the list but I am so so pleased with it. It just sat so well with Jonah and we both liked it!
Sophie Maren: Sophie again honours our Jewish faith and although it is fairly popular, that doesn’t really bother me or DH and is just so pretty. Although a moment of silence must go to the fallen (vetoed): Ophelia, Olivia, Phoebe, Susannah, Frida, Jean, Alexis, Alice & Freya. Maren was DH’s choice and although I didn’t like it at first and there were lots of other name I would put before it, it slowly grew on me and that made it very meaningful.
So in all, of course there were so so so many names I would loved to use but couldn’t but that’s just part of compromising and when it comes to naming an actual, physical human, some of the names on your list just don’t work and you can’t see them on an actual baby, no matter how cool or sweet the combo looks on paper.
