Dinah

What do people think of the name [name_f]Dinah[/name_f]? I’ve always loved it but my DH and MIL both instantly thought I meant Diner, like an American burger joint and completely rejected it. For me it’s a really old fashioned elegant name and I completely didn’t even hear the Diner connection until they said it! … Has anyone else experienced this with any other names?

I can’t really like it, because it sounds like Diner, and also because there’s that annoying song about the grey goose.

Haha I don’t know the song! The only [name_f]Dinah[/name_f] that comes to my mind is the cat in [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland so for me it’s kind of whimsical as well but it’s a definite no for me now haha I can’t have people thinking I’ve named my child after a burger restaurant :see_no_evil:

it sounds too old-fashioned for me - i prefer spunky yet sophisticated names, rather than older-sounding ones.

[name_f]Dinah[/name_f] is sweet to me! It just reminds me of [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland. I go to diners all the time, and the connection wouldn’t have crossed my mind because the endings are so different. Unless you live somewhere where they’re pronounced the same!
I think [name_f]Dinah[/name_f] is very pretty otherwise, and I like that it’s old fashioned without sounding old

I like it. Maybe being British means the Diner association isn’t so immediate though. Otherwise I think it’s an intriguing and distinctive sounding name

It’s always felt so for me, too, which is mainly why I wish I could love it. But, yes, the unfortunate diner association is pretty strong.

I’m British and it never even occurred to me but it was the first thing they both said when I suggested it! Now unfortunately it’s all I can hear! Maybe I’ll use it when we get a cat instead haha

I know a [name_f]Dinah[/name_f], so I’m biased, but I think it has a lot going for it! It’s Biblical (though not a happy story) and connects to [name_f]Alice[/name_f] in Wonderland, so it has a history without being too common. It sounds sweet and old-fashioned while being usable. It’s not too close to diner. Weirdly enough, she does run into pronunciation problems, but those are easily fixed.

Ooh, pretty! I’m a [name_u]Brit[/name_u] and didn’t make the diner connection, and honestly wouldn’t really see it as a problem anyway as its not a word we really use here.

I like it. It reminds me of my all time fave [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] but in a more short & sweet form, and the N sound in the middle makes it a bit more punchy.

Dinah reminds me of [name_f]Dinah[/name_f] [name_m]Lance[/name_m], aka [name_m]Black[/name_m] [name_f]Canary[/name_f] in DC Comics. It’s a little old school, but unless you live somewhere with really thick Northeast accents ([name_m]Boston[/name_m]?), I don’t feel feel like “diner” would be an issue.

I immediately thought of [name_f]Diana[/name_f] and diner when I read it. Maybe [name_f]Diana[/name_f] would be a better option for you? The diner connotation with [name_f]Dinah[/name_f] is too strong for me
On that note, I’m from [name_u]Colorado[/name_u] (the middle of the US) and although I pronounce the r on diner, I still heard the connection by just reading the name

I’m glad some people like it but it definitely seems a bit of a divisive one! Marmite for sure! Funnily enough I’m not a fan of [name_f]Diana[/name_f] even though I know they’re similar, for a British person to call their child [name_f]Diana[/name_f] I think they’d have to be a pretty hardcore royalist and that’s definitely not me haha! [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] is another name I really like actually, they’re definitely of a similar vibe!

I think [name_f]Dinah[/name_f] is a good name, just not one that fits my style. It’s a beautiful biblical name. Sweet but unique. I know two women named [name_f]Dina[/name_f] (not sure if it is their nickname or full name) and the name suits them well.

I do like [name_f]Dinah[/name_f] quite a bit but prefer [name_f]Dina[/name_f] (pronounced dee-nuh). I think it’s very usable.
