Diner waitress?

So we had finally decided on a name if this baby is a girl…[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f]. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] was the name we both liked best, and [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] is the name of my grandmother who raised me. We aren’t telling anyone else the name, so we haven’t heard any feedback at all about it. Then yesterday I mentioned maybe putting the name meaning/why we chose it on the birth announcement and my husband said, “yeah because everyone else will probably think her name sounds like a diner waitress”. I know I’m hormonal but I burst into tears. He says he loves it and was trying to be funny but now i can’t get it out of my head. Does it sound like a diner waitress? Should I scrap it and start over?

I wouldn’t say diner waitress; I would think more along the lines of old Irish granny. But if the name is important to you, I wouldn’t let one harmless comment get in the way of that. That being said, here are a few suggestions:

[name_f]Eloise[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Willa[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Brenna[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Brigid[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Sheila[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Collette[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Cathleen[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Calla[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]

I wouldn’t say diner waitress, but I can see what your husband means. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is lovely, a very fresh name and if [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] has meaning to you, then go for it! It’s not like her middle name will be known by everyone anyway. If you both love the name, nothing should stop you from using it.

A diner waitress?! Named [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]?! Not in the slightest! It’s the epitome of sweet and [name_m]French[/name_m] and chic imo. Objectively speaking, I wouldn’t expect a [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] to be a diner waitress at all (not that she couldn’t be!)–and if I were writing a story about a diner waitress, she wouldn’t be named [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] (or anything remotely close to that!) unless she had dreams of aspiring to be a novelist or involved in hands-on philanthropy, or if she was a poor [name_m]FRENCH[/name_m] diner waitress with dreams of something bigger and grander, haha. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is everything lovely and sweet. Good luck!

Based totally off of tv shows i can recall from memory, the stereotypical diner waitress’s name is [name_u]Shelley[/name_u]. Also the only [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] i know is a gorgeous little girl obsessed with cowgirls.

I think you’re good. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is a lovely name. [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] isn’t my style, but i think the combo and honoring family is lovely

I have no idea where the diner waitress thing is coming from O.o Is there a famous [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] in a movie or something who works in a diner? To me the name [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is very sleek and dainty and fairy-like. [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] is very saucy and bouncy and Irish…it always makes me think of that song “[name_f]Star[/name_f] of the County Down” in which the singer’s love is called a sweet/fair colleen.

I think the name is beautiful! If you loved it before the hormones took over, chances are you’ll love it even more when the baby is here and the hormones start to fade. I wouldn’t change a thing!

I think the diner waitress thing might come from the rhythm. Waitresses do tend to have 2 syllable names. You might consider a three- or one- syllable name, or perhaps a double middle. [name_f]Sylviana[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] nn [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] would be sweet.

It doesn’t sound like a diner waitress to me. I really love it. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is one of my favourites and [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] is a guilty pleasure of mine. Please don’t ditch it. If I met a little [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] one day, I would have to hold myself back from giving the mother/father a huge hug and saying “WELL DONE! HER NAME’S PERFECT!”

It’s like when my husband shot down [name_f]Tess[/name_f] because it sounds too much like an elephants name. Makes no sense at all! [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] is fabulous. The exact combo was on my list, but I couldn’t get my husband on board with [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]. Jealous that you could! And congrats on a beautiful choice

I don’t think of a diner waitress at all!! I think that [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] is a perfectly beautiful name! I love it!

If you love it, then go with it! [name_m]Trust[/name_m] me, it does not sound like a diner waitress! If it isn’t everyone’s favorite at first, it will be soon enough. A while ago (before the name [name_f]Grace[/name_f] was kind of popular) my aunt and uncle named their daughter [name_f]Grace[/name_f], and nobody really liked it that much, but after a while it was everyone’s favorite name and now everyone loves it!

I adore the name sylvie, and wanted to use it myself! [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] does not sound diner waitress at all to me…I love that the name holds so much meaning for you, too. I wouldn’t change a thing. My friend actually named her daughter (now 4) [name_f]Colleen[/name_f], and they call her [name_f]Lena[/name_f].

It does sound old lady-ish but [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is kiddie (as oppose to [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f]) so it’s not all the way there. To me, [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] sounds ageless while [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] feels like an old woman or a baby

You’re not going to get a round of applause over this or any name. If we all liked the same names then there wouldn’t be so much variety in the world. If you like it then own it

Waitresses tend to have 2 syllable names? That is the most arbitrary and nonsensical thing I’ve heard in a while, lol.

I love [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]. Not so keen on [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] but it’s in the middle spot and has meaning to you so I think you should stick with what you have.

I wouldn’t change a thing.

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is shimmering and lovely. I actually like [name_f]Colleen[/name_f], but I think meaning for middle names always trumps “image” anyway. I am picking a family name for the middle, even if another choice might sound more nameberry-ish.

It doesn’t sound waitress-y. I think of waitress names as ones where people say the first and middle as though they’re one name - ShelbyLynn, KellyAnn, WandaMay, etc.

There’s a sweet little girl down the street here named [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]; she’s about 5, and I’ve heard people compliment her name.

Definitely NOT a diner waitress name!!! Men just have a way of making the most random, weirdest connections with names. My husband told me that [name_f]Corinne[/name_f] sounds like a chant a little league baseball team would yell…? What?!?

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about it! [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] is a beautiful name!!!

No! [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is absolute feminine perfection! Any name could be a diner waitress name if you want to get down to it. [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is one of my favs but is tied to a famous diner, but I still don’t consider it a diner name.

[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t let your husband’s lame joke or your hormones get the better of your sound judgement. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] is fine so if you love the combo I would encourage you to put aside your reservations and embrace it. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is sophisticated, [name_m]French[/name_m] and chic.

Thank you all so much for your kind replies! As crazy and hormonal as I was feeling, it is also hard because I’m not IN [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] with the name [name_f]Colleen[/name_f], but honoring my grandma is important to me. Her full name is [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Colleen[/name_f], but she goes by her middle name, or much more often, by her nickname “[name_f]Coco[/name_f]”. I do love the name [name_f]Clara[/name_f] but I feel like it doesn’t flow super well with [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]. I’ve even had people suggest using [name_f]Coco[/name_f] as her middle since that is what my grandma goes by, but our surname starts with a hard C and I feel like [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Coco[/name_f] C----- is a mouthful.
