I’ve been super dizzy for the last week. Sometimes so bad it’s hard to walk straight or focus my eyes. It’s been giving me headaches and making me nauseated.
So I went to the doctor and she basically said ‘I dunno’. She called it mild vertigo and told me to rest and take motion sickness meds. She also had me get basic blood work done.
Then I went to a friends house and told her about how I was feeling dizzy and she laughingly said, ‘Maybe you’re pregnant! I was dizzy when I was pregnant.’ I looked it up and apparently it’s true–it’s sometimes a symptom during pregnancy.
Then I got the results from my blood work. The nurse said that everything was normal except my platelets were a bit low. The doctor wasn’t too concerned, just wants me to repeat the test in a few months.
So of course I googled, “low platelets” and one of the first things that came up was that it can sometimes happen during pregnancy.
My question is this: am I freaking out over nothing? [name_f]Do[/name_f] they test your hormone levels for pregnancy during routine blood work and thus would have told me if I was pregnant? I’m taking birth control so I have no reason to think I am. Is this connection of dizziness and low platelets just a weird coincidence or did any of you have a similar situation early on? I just don’t want to get myself all worked up over nothing.
The thing is, there are so many things that can be a symptom of pregnancy. I was dizzy a lot for the first few weeks I was pregnant with Roo, it made me very nauseous and I thought I had a migraine coming. I was on the pill when I got pregnant, so it happens! In my experience, whenever I’ve said to one of my friends - especially those with children - that I’m feeling a bit off in some way, their first response has always been “maybe you’re pregnant!”.
I googled low platelets and dizziness is one of the most common symptoms, so it might be just that. Good luck, though, and if you’re pregnant you’ll make a beautiful mama!
Yes, exactly, it feels like a migraine is coming on, but it’s never quite fully there.
And you’re right about women saying everything reminds them of this or that pregnancy symptom.
Maybe it is the low platelets causing the dizziness.
I just need to chill out and not get worked up. I just feel like I can’t say anything to anyone because everyone would go crazy if I even brought it up in passing. I think the only person who wouldn’t be thrilled out of their mind at my being pregnant is DH, lol!
Dizziness is a side effect of a low platelet count. Neither one individually or in conjunction would necessarily lead a physician to jump to pregnancy. More likely, your platelets are low as a result of something else… Have you had a virus? Been on an antibiotic or other medication? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have tenderness in the spleen area (left side below rib cage)?
Routine blood work does not include a pregnancy test though so, all that said, if you have any reason to suspect pregnancy you need to take a test ASAP. Pregnancy can happen while on the pill (as ottillie attested to!). It’s probably worth ruling out in case. Good luck!!
I understand how you feel, I was terrified when I realised I could be pregnant with this one. You should take a pregnancy test to be sure! And if you are pregnant I’m sure your husband would be happy. Surprise babies are the best! (not that i’ve got any experience with the other kind, haha!)
I’ll be thinking of you, hoping it turns out the way you want it to!
I’ve actually had the same thing happen to me though not when I was pregnant. I would get really dizzy but not really have any other major symptoms. Only a slight headache. When I look back on these times it happened when I was really, really stressed. I don’t want you to take offence at this but in my case I think it was psychosomatic, it was at times when I was really busy. I think it was my mind’s way of telling me that I needed to rest my body. What helped me was taking motrin and spending a couple of days in bed. I think it was rest that actually fixed it.
In terms of a pregnancy test I would bet your doctor already ran one with your blood work, it is usually the thing they try to rule out first. Whatever it is I hope you feel better soon.
I was super dizzy once. After a few weeks of putting up with it I went to the doctor and it turned out that one of the tiny bones in my ear was slightly dislodged. It went back into place on its own after a while and I just had to take some anti-dizziness pills until then which helped. It was a pretty cool thing to explain to people! Lol.
It might be different where you live, but in [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand pregnancy tests are not part of a standard blood count so if you’d had the test done here it would be very very unlikely they’d have looked at that - but like I said, might be different where you are.
If you have any reason at all to suspect you might be pregnant then take a test. Couple of dollars for peace of mind is worth it
Whether or not a pregnancy test was done on you really depends on your doc. Some docs include it routinely for all women in the child-bearing age period and some don’t. But I’m sure you can call and ask. The most important thing to do - if it wasn’t included - is to take a test yourself. Pee on a stick or go back to the doctor and get a blood test. It’s not one of those things that goes away if you ignore it long enough (as you know). I’ve had bouts of vertigo and it sucks so you have my sympathy! Mine turned out to be related to a severe sinus infection. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you feel better soon!
[name_m]Both[/name_m] are signs of anemia. Try a multivitamin–make sure it’s one with iron in it–and see if that helps. Anemia is common among women in general due to menstrual blood loss. I donate blood as often as I am able which obviously also causes anemia, but when I religiously take my vitamin, my iron levels stay normal. Another common cause of dizziness among women is simply dehydration (which leads to low blood pressure and then dizziness). So another easy thing to try is making sure you’re drinking plenty of water.
Is you friend that type of people who think woman’s poor health can be caused only by pregnancy or PMS? [name_f]One[/name_f] of my friends is the same kind, she suspected me of being pregnant since teenage years, well.
Firstly, you should not worry or freak out because it’s bad for health anyway and can make you feel only worse. I am pretty sure low platelets can be the reason of dizziness. Or it can be low air pressure, I feel dizzy very often if the pressure is below 730.
As for pregnancy, while it all depends much, my only pregnancy symptom was the absence of periods. No headaches or nausea.
[name_m]Don[/name_m]'t freak out yet and I hope you feel better as soon as possible. And if you are pregnant, I am sure you will be a great mommy Surprise babies are gifts, believe me.
Are you sure a pregnancy test wasn’t included with your bloodwork? If you are worried just buy a cheap home pregnancy test - it will put your mind at ease.
