Do I need to be Welsh to use Rhys

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! We’re considering [name_m]Rhys[/name_m] for our soon to be 2nd boy. We have no connection to [name_m]Wales[/name_m] nor any welsh heritage, we just like the name “Reese”, and want to use the most common spelling for a boy which appears to be [name_m]Rhys[/name_m] based on social security lists in the US.

It’s absolutely fine!
Most names that people use are from other countries anyways, plus it’s not an uncommon name so he would not feel too alienated at all, he just might have some Starbucks trouble in the future is all  I would say absolutely go for it

[name_f]My[/name_f] brother’s name is [name_m]Rhys[/name_m] (born in 1991). Technically yes, we have Welsh heritage somewhere in there, but it has no bearing on our family nor on his name choice. So I think its fine.

It’s fine! It’s a fairly popular choice in the US and I doubt all of those families are Welsh - plus, it’s a familiar name that has definitely crossed over into mainstream usage

I can’t speak for the US but in the UK there are lots of boys and young men named [name_m]Rhys[/name_m] who aren’t Welsh. It’s a popular name broadly regardless of someone’s heritage. I think it’s perfectly fine.

Congrats :tada:

Completely fine!

[name_m]Rhys[/name_m] is a relatively universal name that lots of people use who are not Welsh. I know two boys named [name_m]Rhys[/name_m] one is a 100% Scottish and the other 100% Jamaican!

I’m an [name_f]English[/name_f] berry so this is from an [name_f]English[/name_f] perspective may be different elsewhere.

I’m Welsh - Absolutely not! In the UK [name_m]Rhys[/name_m] is used regardless of how Welsh the parents are, though it is more common in [name_m]Wales[/name_m] than [name_f]England[/name_f] and [name_f]Scotland[/name_f].

Id much rather see an American [name_m]Rhys[/name_m] than a [name_m]Reece[/name_m]. As long as people arent givingnthe names to girls, I love it.

[name_f]My[/name_f] Australian bro is [name_m]Rhys[/name_m] - yes, some Welsh a couple of generations back but my mother - who is not bringing any Welsh to the table - picked the name. Def prefer this spelling!

I think it’s completely fine!

[name_m]Rhys[/name_m] is a great choice for your little boy, whether you have Welsh ancestry or not. It is a well-established name in English-speaking countries and it is popular in various parts of the world. I love this spelling and I believe it will be well-received in USA.

It’s totally fine, especially in a place with so many mixed cultures! It’s growing in popularity, especially in the last decade. It’s not like every [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] you meet is Greek (I know it’s not the most accurate analogy, but you get the idea) :slightly_smiling_face:

No, I don’t think so! I actually prefer using the original, traditional spelling of names where possible. Not to mention [name_m]Rhys[/name_m] is widely known and most will have no issue with the pronunciation and/or spelling.
