I said no but then I’m from the UK and it may be different where you live.

I don’t think you’d have to worry. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_m]Fisher[/name_m] has spelled put a spotlight on the name. In high school I went to school with an [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. After pronouncing it “iz-LA”, she told me it was like the world “island” just without the ending. So easy to remember after that!

I confess I had a girl at the daycare I worked at for two years and I still have no idea how to pronounce it correctly and I saw her four days a week for 2 years.

Thanks for the input ladies, much appreciated!

I don’t see it getting mispronounced too often.

I’m pretty sure most people say it right these days as [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is becoming well know. When I first read it years ago I thought it was said Ee-sa like the iguana on [name_f]Dora[/name_f] the [name_u]Explorer[/name_u], but now [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_m]Fisher[/name_m] is more well known than the iguana.

It is not the most auto correct friendly, my tablet kept making it island or Islam. The similarity to island does help the pronunciation though, so it’s a good thing.

I see the name getting more familiar, plus that coupled with the name’s similarity to the word ‘island’, I wouldn’t think it would be too much of an issue. If it were to get mispronounced, a simple correction would probably do the job

I’m in the [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_f]East[/name_f]! I know a little [name_f]Isla[/name_f], in mostly a working class area or [name_m]German[/name_m] and English decent… No one pronounces it correctly.

I love the name [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and i was thinking the same thing but… its like someone said to me, its the same as ISLAND and [name_f]ISLE[/name_f]. I adore the name and its my number one girls name too  good choice. [name_f]Eila[/name_f] just looks weird so def go with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] . It’s beautiful. Im stuck on a middle name . Any ideas?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] ladies, I reached out to a friend with an [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and asked him, here is what he said. In short, a beautiful name no question, but at this point, I’m pretty sure there is a legitimate issue with pronunciation. We are both located in the Northeast.

"YES we are constantly correcting the pronunciation of her name. We get “Izzzla” a lot… Its unfortunate because we think its a beautiful name.My wife has discussed how she wants to change [name_f]Isla[/name_f]'s name all the time. [name_f]Every[/name_f] Dr. appointment we have and they call her name incorrectly, I get an eye roll.

So in short, I love the name, but it may prove to be a nuisance to you. But that being said, I really do not care what other people think and I generally reply to people when they say “Izla”, “Have you spent a lot of time on an IZZZLAND? because her name sounds like ISLAND”."

One option is Iyla, which I’ve seen used. I much prefer [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and am surprised people don’t know how to pronounce it.
I say go with [name_f]Isla[/name_f], don’t be influenced by people’s ignorance.

I have a daughter named [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. She is 17 months old and we live in the rural southwest United States (high percentage of Spanish speakers).

Once they hear it people don’t have an issue saying it correctly. As others have said, when you tell people it’s like island without the n or d it’s no biggie. People usually mispronounce it when reading it. We’ve gotten Es-la, which isn’t surprising where I live and the worst we’ve heard is ice-la.

You have to decide whether people mispronouncing it is a deal breaker for you or not. But just think about this, my name is [name_f]Julia[/name_f] (classic, simple) and you would be shocked how many times people call me [name_u]Julie[/name_u]. My point being people who don’t pay attention can mispronounce any name.

Good luck in deciding.
