Do these sibling names go?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there,

We are having a baby girl in [name_f]May[/name_f]. I really like the name [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], we have a short last name (3 letters) so I think it sounds good with it. Its one of the very few names my husband and I agree on. My other children have long names, which we shortened for nicknames, and for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] I like [name_f]Millie[/name_f].

But I have a son called [name_m]William[/name_m] (which we call [name_m]Will[/name_m] for short), and he is going to be the brother closest in age to her. So I feel like when you call the kids its usually in order, so it will always be '[name_m]Will[/name_m], [name_f]Millie[/name_f]". Is this sounding too much the same?

I know there are other nicknames for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], like [name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_f]Mila[/name_f] or [name_f]Milla[/name_f] which are ok, but I really like [name_f]Millie[/name_f]. I don’t know any [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]'s so not sure if the whole name is usually just used and not shortened, but I think names usually are.

Please let me know what you think, I’ve liked this name for ages, but may have to let it go…

I can see where it could be hard but I think you could probably get away with it.

If not wbu [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nn [name_f]Margie[/name_f]? Similar but distinct enough.

I think if you can own it as a “thing”, [name_m]Will[/name_m] and Mill, [name_m]Willy[/name_m] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f], and enjoy when other people point it out, then go for it! Most of their lives, no one will care!

You could think about another name - like [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - and call her [name_f]Millie[/name_f] (or for eg [name_f]Tilly[/name_f]) but have the option of a distinct nn (eg [name_f]Tilda[/name_f]) if you don’t think you’d use another [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] nn (where [name_f]Millie[/name_f] not working). I’d probably not be able to not have an exit strategy for this.

Thank-you for the suggestions. I need to think about it more. I’m wondering if I can get past it, as this name has been up there for years for me. Part of me thinks to just name her this and see what nn evolve. I may have to get used to another nn, if this is the name ([name_f]Amelia[/name_f]) we want.

I wondered if [name_f]Maya[/name_f] could be a nn for amelia, as we both kind of like that. At friend has a [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and i don’t like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] much.

I’ll think about it some more, but any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

I think you should go with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and just see what happens. Her nickname might end up being something totally unrelated to her name – [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] because she’s so cheerful, or something random like [name_f]Gigi[/name_f]. I have a friend [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] whose mother calls her [name_f]DeeDee[/name_f] and my aunt [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] pretty much exclusively goes by Biz. Nicknames are weird, and some of the best ones aren’t planned. It seems like you really love [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and it is a beautiful name with rich nickname potential. I think you should take the leap.

I think the nicknames with a shared sound would be fine, especially since the first initial is different. I only know a couple of Amelias, but they both use the name in full. I love the name [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] too.

[name_m]Will[/name_m] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] are perfectly fine. BTW, love [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f].

I don’t thinking [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and [name_m]William[/name_m] are too similar at all, and in fact I like [name_m]Will[/name_m] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] as siblings. The double “l” is a very subtle connection, and I wouldn’t find the names matchy at all. Would you consider using [name_f]Amy[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]? Or using [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] and calling her [name_f]Emma[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmie[/name_f]? Names that give me the same classic, vintage vibe as [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] are [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Audrey[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], and [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], so maybe one of those appeals as an alternative?

I love [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] and I think “[name_m]Willy[/name_m] and [name_f]Milly[/name_f]” is adorable! However, I think a good name to use if you don’t want them rhyming or sounding too similar would be [name_f]Molly[/name_f]. I think you could get away with having [name_f]Molly[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] but [name_f]Molly[/name_f] is also cute as a full name.

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] is so sweet and I love the nn [name_f]Millie[/name_f]! [name_m]Will[/name_m] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] are actually kinda cute sounding together. I say go for it, especially since you’ve loved the name for so long.

I don’t think it’s a problem. They are similar in sound but different enough to still be distinct.

Thank you everyone!!! I’m feeling much better about using [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and just seeing how things pan out. A friend of mine has a [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], and her nn is Sassy or Sass as her little brother couldn’t say [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], nothing I would have imagined for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f].

I like the [name_f]Molly[/name_f] suggestion for nn too, I hadn’t thought of that one. I do like [name_f]Emilia[/name_f] but their cousin is [name_m]Emmerson[/name_m] with the same last name and I feel its too close.

Thanks again everyone!

I think they’re great together. I would probably call an [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] at home.

I would just use [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] no nickname. [name_m]Will[/name_m] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] is too much for me, personally. I dont like the sound of them together, theyre too simar to my ear. I love [name_f]Molly[/name_f] and think it works with [name_m]Will[/name_m] but not as a nn for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f].

I think [name_m]Will[/name_m] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] are fine together

I think you should stick with [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and I think that [name_m]Will[/name_m] and [name_f]Millie[/name_f] are absolutely fine. If I heard 2 kids called this I would note the similarity in sounds but not think it too close or a problem at all. And the full names, [name_m]William[/name_m] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] are great together.

If you are worried about it I think using nn [name_f]Molly[/name_f] or [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], or something else, ([name_f]Melly[/name_f]?) is the answer. I’m not keen on [name_f]Maya[/name_f] as an [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] nn as it seems like a completely different full name to me. But, as pps have said, something quite different might eventuate as the nn such as [name_u]Sunny[/name_u], [name_f]Lulu[/name_f]…etc.

I think it would be fine, especially since their given names aren’t close to each other.
