Do twins names have to match?

Hey everyone, the other day at work I met twin boys [name_m]Alejandro[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m]. Their names threw me off for a second because they didn’t sound like twin names. My question for you is do twins have to have “matching” or similar style names?

Also nothing to do with the top part but I met a little girl name [name_f]Antoinella[/name_f] and thought it was a beautiful choice.

I don’t think so. Although as a name nerd, I’d probably wince a bit at drastically different twin names in terms of style, like twin girls called [name_u]Kendall[/name_u] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] (random example). But to be honest I’d feel the same if they were siblings too. Sometimes it can work really well though, and I love some twinsets that are of a completely different style, but because I like the names, it doesn’t bother me. E.g. [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] & [name_m]Nikolai[/name_m] or [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] & [name_f]Elsie[/name_f].

Oh, and [name_f]Antoinella[/name_f] is very pretty, though [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f] still has my heart :).

Although I love when twin names match with each other, they don’t have to.

I don’t think so at all - I know quite a few sets of twins with varying names:

[name_f]Emma[/name_f] & [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_f]Lauren[/name_f] & [name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f] ([name_u]Jackie[/name_u])
[name_u]Michael[/name_u] & [name_f]Michaela[/name_f] (no word of a lie, I found two sets like this in my high school yearbook)
[name_f]Jessica[/name_f] & [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Tiffany[/name_f] & [name_m]Brandon[/name_m]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] ([name_f]Becky[/name_f]) & [name_m]Joel[/name_m]
[name_m]Jack[/name_m] & [name_f]McKayla[/name_f]
[name_f]Amber[/name_f] & [name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] & [name_m]Jake[/name_m]
[name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] & [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]
[name_f]Hailey[/name_f] & [name_f]Summer[/name_f]
[name_m]William[/name_m] ([name_u]Willie[/name_u]) & [name_f]Rheya[/name_f]

I feel like quite a few of those sets don’t perfectly match up, but they all seem to work for me (other than [name_u]Michael[/name_u] and [name_f]Michaela[/name_f]). I think, when you name twins, you should choose two names you completely love, rather than one name you love, and another that matches perfectly.

I don’t think [name_m]Alejandro[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] don’t match… If you mean match like letter wise, I’d prefer they didn’t. It’s cute when they’re themey in a very non obvious way, like both famous authors or both meaning star or something.

Twins I know:
[name_f]Christine[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m] and [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]David[/name_m] and [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]
[name_u]Tyler[/name_u] and [name_m]Travis[/name_m]
[name_m]Leo[/name_m] and [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] (they were much older and since deceased)
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]
[name_f]Summer[/name_f] and [name_u]Reed[/name_u]
[name_u]Andrea[/name_u] and [name_f]Lauren[/name_f]
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] and [name_m]Matthew[/name_m]
[name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] and [name_m]Dante[/name_m]
[name_m]Eric[/name_m] and [name_m]Robert[/name_m]

Plus triplets: [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_m]Robert[/name_m], and [name_u]Michael[/name_u]

and quads:
[name_u]Kendall[/name_u], [name_f]Kayleigh[/name_f], [name_f]Maddy[/name_f] (not sure if NN), and [name_m]Liam[/name_m]
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_m]Robert[/name_m], [name_f]Erin[/name_f], and [name_f]Grace[/name_f]

Except for the T names and rhyming names, none “match”,but I don’t think they don’t go well

I don’t think twin names have to “match” per se and I actually feel quite ill when I meet twins named [name_u]Stacy[/name_u] and [name_u]Tracy[/name_u] or [name_m]Brian[/name_m] and [name_f]Brianna[/name_f], or even [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f] and [name_f]Kaitlyn[/name_f]. I think that’s just a little, well, tacky. However, I love when twin names have the same “feel.” For example, [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Olive[/name_f], or [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]–names that are different, yet evoke the same vibe. However, I think you should approach each child as an individual and not as a set. When I think about names for my future children, I want my names to have a similar feel, so I would never name my children [name_f]Meadow[/name_f] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] because those names just don’t go together at all. So, matchy, no, but I think the names should have the same feel or style.

[name_f]IMO[/name_f] absolutely not. I have a friend who has twin girls and their names are pretty different. One has a unisex name and the other a tradition Celtic name. If I had twins they probably wouldn’t match either.
But it is sometimes cute when they do match, I just don’t think they have to match.

I don’t think so at all. In fact, I prefer when they’re non-matching. We have twin girls, [name_f]Esme[/name_f] [name_f]Mireille[/name_f] and [name_f]Nadine[/name_f] [name_f]Adele[/name_f]. [name_f]Esme[/name_f] and [name_f]Nadine[/name_f] aren’t matchy, but I think they work well together.

I don’t like it when twin names are matchy honestly… I like them to be distint and unique in their own way but still sound like they’re siblings. Think about it… Twins already shared the womb for 9 months, share the same birthday among many other things and still manage to have total unique personalities, so should their names.
So, when naming twins I would say it’s only right to name them as if they were just siblings born years apart. Along the same style but not matchy…

Whether twin names “match” in style is highly subjective. You’ll get some people who don’t care (probably the majority of the general population) and some who care a lot (many Berries on here who have an obsession with names). I fall into the second category (what a surprise :)). I prefer that twins have names which are distinct but complementary to each other. [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] would be what I would choose in the case that you mentioned in your post but I don’t find [name_m]Alejandro[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] too horrible to contemplate. They’re both versions of classic and traditional names so that would be the common factor which would connect the two in my mind.

In regards to [name_f]Antoinella[/name_f], it’s either [name_f]Antonella[/name_f] or [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f]. [name_f]Antoinella[/name_f] seems like a modern smoosh of [name_u]Antoine[/name_u] and an “ella” name to me.

I wouldn’t choose names that are too matchy or rhyme.I might not even choose names with the same initial. That would depend on the names being to similar. [name_f]Autumn[/name_f] and [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] might work but not [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f].

I would look for the names to be somewhat in sync.[name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] for example close but not too similar.

I definitely don’t think twin names should be “matchy” ex: [name_u]Kay[/name_u] and [name_f]May[/name_f] or [name_m]George[/name_m] and [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] or [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] and [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], that sort of think…even starting with the same letter (like [name_m]Victor[/name_m] and [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]) would be pushing it for me. I do think, however, that twin names (like most siblings really) should match in terms of style, [name_m]Edward[/name_m] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (both classics) [name_u]Carson[/name_u] and [name_u]Harper[/name_u] (both modern) [name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_f]Esme[/name_f] (both popular vintage) I find [name_m]Alejandro[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] a bit jarring, unless [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] was pronounced the Spanish way, E-Zahk

I don’t think they have to match at all. It is more important that you love both the names. If you love names that are completely different , oh well. [name_m]Just[/name_m] make sure they don’t sound awful together because they will be said together/ written together a lot.

I like matching styles with any sibling names (including multiples) but not matching names. For example, I do not like [name_u]Blake[/name_u] and Eliizabeth for two girls but I do like [name_u]Blake[/name_u] and [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u] or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] for twin girls.

I also think subtle connections between twin (or sibling names). Some of my favorites:

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] (feminized versions of male names)
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f] and [name_f]Stella[/name_f] (space related theme)
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] and [name_m]George[/name_m] (British kings)

i hate it when twin names match in a too obvious way. I would avoid same initials, and same sounds. [name_m]Even[/name_m] same themes can be a bit much to be onest. I think [name_m]Alejandro[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] are both names that work in Spanish speaking country, I wouldn’t say they don’t “match”.

I recently encountered twins [name_f]Livia[/name_f] and [name_f]Viola[/name_f], and I think they’re too similar (three letters in common) without even matching.

Not to a certain extent in my opinion. By this, I mean I would never call twins [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m], or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. But I would give them names of a similar style, so [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] and [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f], or [name_u]Story[/name_u] and [name_f]Willow[/name_f]. I would try and match them stylistically regardless of whether they’re twins or not, extremely mismatched sibsets make me uneasy.

I know twins [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f], and although they match stylistically, they are way too close. They did go by [name_f]Soph[/name_f] and [name_u]Steph[/name_u] which wasn’t any better. I also know twin girls P.a.g.a.n and [name_u]Jodie[/name_u], and although not stylistically matching, I’ve known them all my life so don’t view it as odd.

The twin-set you mentioned in your original post did sound a little off to me. I don’t think twin names necessarily have to match as in, starting with the same letter, or have the same meaning. But I do think the names should ‘go’ together.

That being said, the same goes for regular siblings. Twin names dont need to ‘match’, but they should flow in the same way that regular siblings would

Trying to think here if I know twins with overly matchy names. The worst I can think of (and it’s honestly pretty bad) is [name_f]Lacie[/name_f] and [name_u]Lexie[/name_u], seniors who graduated last year. I don’t like it when twin names are too close, like with [name_f]Lacie[/name_f] and [name_u]Lexie[/name_u], or if they rhyme. I don’t mind twin names that start with the same letter. I love it when the names match stylistically. I think naming twins should work like naming regular siblings.

I’m assuming you mean style, and my answer is no, they don’t need to match.

I can’t stand when people give their twins ‘matchy’ names or even regular siblings lol
I think patterns or styles or similar sounding names in sibsets is super annoying but I know a lot of people like it
I don’t name a family or sibset based on what kind of name the others have
