Do you associate these names with the US presidents?

Hello Berries,

Recently I was thinking about how many US Presidential surnames are used as first names and was wondering how strongly you associate the names with the presidents. This is an incomplete list of presidential surnames- I only chose the ones that I think of as common or at least well-known first names.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being “I only think of the president” and 1 being “there was a president with that surname?” or “I never connected the two”), how strongly do you associate these first names with presidents?

[name_u]Reagan[/name_u]
[name_u]Carter[/name_u]
[name_m]Ford[/name_m]
[name_m]Nixon[/name_m]
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u]
[name_m]Truman[/name_m]
[name_m]Wilson[/name_m]
McKinley
[name_m]Harrison[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_u]Hayes[/name_u]
[name_m]Grant[/name_m]
[name_u]Lincoln[/name_u]
[name_m]Pierce[/name_m]
[name_u]Taylor[/name_u]
[name_u]Tyler[/name_u]
[name_u]Jackson[/name_u]
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u]
[name_u]Madison[/name_u]

Also, if you feel comfortable, I would love to know if you are in the US or not for some perspective

Canadian here who lives close to the border!

Honestly, the only 10 for me is [name_m]Nixon[/name_m]. The rest are all either commonly used names ([name_m]Arthur[/name_m], [name_u]Tyler[/name_u], [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_u]Carter[/name_u], [name_u]Madison[/name_u], [name_u]Lincoln[/name_u], [name_m]Grant[/name_m], [name_u]Reagan[/name_u]) or ones I associate other things with first ([name_m]Truman[/name_m] = The [name_m]Truman[/name_m] Show, [name_m]Ford[/name_m] = cars, [name_m]Pierce[/name_m] - [name_m]Brosnan[/name_m], [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] - [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f], etc.)

Reagan - 6

I’m also American and love history, but most of these names have evolved beyond names of presidents.

[name_u]Reagan[/name_u] — 9
[name_u]Carter[/name_u] — 2
[name_m]Ford[/name_m] — 2
[name_m]Nixon[/name_m] — 10
[name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] — 9
[name_m]Truman[/name_m] — 8, but I also think of [name_m]Truman[/name_m] Capote and The [name_m]Truman[/name_m] Show
[name_m]Wilson[/name_m] — 1
McKinley — 4
[name_m]Harrison[/name_m] — 1, associated more with a city to me
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] — 1, def the cartoon
[name_u]Hayes[/name_u] — 2, friend with this last name
[name_m]Grant[/name_m] — 1, maybe with the prez from Scandal
[name_u]Lincoln[/name_u] — 8, Prison Break & my best friend’s baby is called [name_u]Lincoln[/name_u]
[name_m]Pierce[/name_m] — 1
[name_u]Taylor[/name_u] — 1, purely a first name to me or [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u]
[name_u]Tyler[/name_u] — 1, first name
[name_u]Jackson[/name_u] — 7
[name_u]Monroe[/name_u] — 2, I had a math teacher with this name & [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f] [name_u]Monroe[/name_u]

I love to see these responses! I guessed that [name_m]Nixon[/name_m], [name_u]Lincoln[/name_u], [name_u]Reagan[/name_u], and [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] would be the most “president-y”, so I’m glad to see that’s not just my take on the names. I also associate [name_m]Ford[/name_m] with the cars, @SparkleNinja18 and @leafsgirl44, but I totally forgot about [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f] [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] :joy:

@eleanorfrigsby I also think of [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] and [name_u]Tyler[/name_u] as purely first names. A few celebrities with [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] as a surname ([name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] like you said, and [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] as well) but they’re very far removed from the presidents imo.

Carter, [name_u]Jackson[/name_u], [name_u]Tyler[/name_u], [name_u]Taylor[/name_u], and [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] are all common enough that they are dissociated with the presidents. [name_u]Monroe[/name_u] feels more [name_f]Marilyn[/name_f] and [name_u]James[/name_u]. And the few left are not as popular, but still don’t feel as tied to one person.

UK person here. I’m not particularly well acquainted with US history, but am aware of some. I think that a more unusual surname plus that particular president’s fame (or infamy!) makes for strong association. Presidents like [name_m]Nixon[/name_m] and [name_u]Lincoln[/name_u] are so well known worldwide that the association is cemented, but [name_u]Carter[/name_u] or [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] are common enough to be anyone.

[name_m]Ford[/name_m] - 2 (I obviously know there was a pres named [name_m]Ford[/name_m] but it’s so popular I rarely connect it or think someone named their kid after a pres when they name their kid [name_m]Ford[/name_m])

[name_m]Ford[/name_m] - 1 (I just think of the car)

[name_m]Truman[/name_m] - 2

[name_m]Arthur[/name_m] - 1
[name_u]Hayes[/name_u] - 1
[name_m]Grant[/name_m] - 2
