Do you give names to inanimate objects?!

I call my car [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] after the character of [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m] [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] in [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables. Some people I know have also “named” their cars, while others think I’m totally bonkers!

Does anyone here do anything similar? Or do you agree that it’s completely crazy?! I just love names so much that it’s fun to name as many things as possible!!

(I’m sorry if I’ve put this thread in the wrong place - wasn’t sure…)

I absolutely give names to inanimate objects that I’m very fond of – and they are always anagrams of something meaningful to me.

I recently acquired a [name_f]Kindle[/name_f] Paperwhite that has become my constant companion. So of course I had to name her: “Celandine Hellspanker.” Which is an anagram of “[name_f]Nephele[/name_f] Carnal’s [name_f]Kindle[/name_f].” ([name_f]Nephele[/name_f] Carnal is the full screenname that I use on the goth forums I administer.)

Oh wow, [name_f]Nephele[/name_f]! That’s stunning! [name_f]Love[/name_f] the name!! Makes me feel reassured that I’m not alone!

I call my car [name_m]Philip[/name_m]. It started as a joke - it’s a SUV and my previous car was a compact so I started calling it [name_m]Philip[/name_m] as in “fill up” - it stuck and now my friends and family also refer to it by name.

Thanks, kazzjazz! Funny how you arrived at your car’s name!! I like how others use it too!

I don’t have a car to name but I’ve named my bike in second grade - [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f].
My sister has got a lot of imagine friends, she is 5 and it’s normal but look at their names - [name_f]Claudia[/name_f], [name_u]Seneca[/name_u] and [name_u]Zen[/name_u]. She says that [name_u]Zen[/name_u] is her boyfriend which is a little scary. [name_u]Seneca[/name_u] is the name of her toothbrush.

Wow, [name_f]Nephele[/name_f], that is a fantastic name!

Speaking of naming inanimate objects, I have a car named [name_m]Spike[/name_m], and I had a co worker once who named everything. I clearly remember her naming her laptop [name_m]Harold[/name_m].

I give names to everything.

My iPhone - [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
My bed - [name_f]Chamois[/name_f] [name_f]Elle[/name_f]
My left eyeball - [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
My pumpkin that’s outside on the porch - [name_m]Caspian[/name_m] [name_m]Levi[/name_m] [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]
My favorite sweatshirt - [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] [name_f]Engracia[/name_f]
My right eyeball - [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]
My volleyball - [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]

I have way too many things named to list here but that’s just a short little tidbit.

I do this too! Everyone thinks I’m crazy but I can’t help it, the names just pop into my head. My car is Jono (because of the number plate) and my guitar is [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] because it begins with a G and it was the name given to me on Victorian day at primary school

My car is named [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] nn [name_f]Lina[/name_f]. And we have a truck that my family never uses and his name is [name_m]Brutus[/name_m]. Also, my mom had a car for the longest time and she named the car [name_f]Suki[/name_f].

LOL. Usually I don’t, but then I got this habit from my ex-roommate and suddenly I start naming things too. Nothing fix except my laptop. She’s a [name_f]Libby[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] [name_f]Libby[/name_f]. I ponder some longer versions but nothing suits her like just [name_f]Libby[/name_f]. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], no. [name_f]Liberty[/name_f], maybe…

I don’t have a car, but I think I’ll be giving my (future) car(s) name too latter.

Haha I totally do this! I’ve posted their names before but:

[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]- my phone
[name_m]Percival[/name_m]- my laptop
[name_m]Aurelius[/name_m]- my disc drive, it’s an external drive
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]- my old laptop
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_f]Viola[/name_f], [name_f]Nelle[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]- my typewriters (all named after authors)

And I don’t even drive but if I ever got a car I would name it [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. [name_f]CARoline[/name_f], get it? :stuck_out_tongue: haha and I actually know a person named [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]…

My Nook Glowlight is named [name_m]Walter[/name_m]. My laptop is named [name_f]Adella[/name_f] (it’s a [name_u]Dell[/name_u]). All my stuffed animals have names.

My laptop’s called [name_f]Sophia[/name_f].

The one I had before that was called [name_f]Bessie[/name_f].

… as a joke, I called my bed [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]. Then it stuck.

My friend named her car [name_m]Cornelius[/name_m]. lol

My laptop: [name_m]Sylvester[/name_m]
My kindle: [name_u]Darcy[/name_u] (it has a Pride and prejudice cover)
My phone: [name_f]Annie[/name_f]
The rubber bands I used to put on my braces at night: [name_u]Gary[/name_u] (plural: Garys)
My teddy: [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] nn ‘[name_u]Teddy[/name_u]’
(Her predecessors were [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] ‘[name_m]Ted[/name_m]’ and Tedward)
My mum’s dressmakers model: [name_f]Monique[/name_f]
That’s all for now

My sewing machine is called [name_f]Bernadine[/name_f] (hey, that rhymes!)
And my ukulele is called [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m] nn Raggi (after [name_m]Ragnar[/name_m] Póhallsson in the band Of Monsters and Men.)

My guitars are named [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f] and [name_f]Bathshira[/name_f]

I’m more in a habit of naming animals I see most days, the goose in the Yarra is Bobbert, the two black swans are [name_f]El[/name_f] Swandro and Swannalina, and the bulldog downstairs is [name_m]Rufus[/name_m] because he looks rough. The naming of animals is more for me and my boyfriend to know what animal we are referring to instead of them remaining nameless, there is a cow back in Winchester [name_f]England[/name_f] called [name_m]Morris[/name_m]. Although I have taken to naming my owl shaped cushion Lady Owlington (Owly) [name_f]Snow[/name_f] and my stuffed toy [name_m]Humphrey[/name_m] [name_u]Storm[/name_u] after the [name_m]Melbourne[/name_m] [name_u]Storm[/name_u] and have taken to given them personality’s. I think anything with a face I give a name too, friends have named their cars anything from [name_f]Foxy[/name_f] to [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f].

As a teacher of 25 years, I am maybe too old to name my newer forms of technology, but I do name many things:

cars: [name_u]Owen[/name_u] then [name_f]Tess[/name_f] then [name_f]Althea[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u]
lawnmower: [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] (she worked better after I named her)
houses: Manygardens, [name_f]Windy[/name_f] Poplars, [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], Plumbago, [name_u]Cerulean[/name_u], Lush Thicket

Stuffed animals, body parts, sections of the garden, you name it (oh my, a pun).

I didn’t get to have kids (mine are in heaven) and my naming just has to come out somehow.
