I have some recordsof my family history and one of my great uncle’s names was [name]Auther[/name] [name]Vincent[/name] [name]Smith[/name]. Does anyone know anything about this name? Is it an alternative of [name]Arthur[/name] or [name]Author[/name]? The poor thing passed away shortly after birth.
I’ve come across [name]Auther[/name] too, and I’m pretty sure it was a misspelling/misheard recording of [name]Arthur[/name].
A teacher at one of the school’s that I sub in has the surname of [name]Auther[/name]. So, it may be a surname name or a variation of [name]Arthur[/name] (I could see that being the case in some regional accents).
It’s usually this, especially with transcriptions. I have a [name]Rose[/name] [name]Anne[/name] who was: [name]Roseanne[/name], [name]Roseanna[/name] and RoseHannah in different places over the years.
And the Dunford family is recorded as: Dumforth, Danford, Dunfords etc.
