[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there. [name_m]Long[/name_m] time lurker first time poster. My partner and I are expecting soon and we don’t know if we are having a boy or a girl. We like names that aren’t too common but nothing that might come across tacky. What do you think of the name [name_u]Ren[/name_u]? If we choose it, any ideas on nicknames that go well with it? Or any ideas of names similar that could be a nice first name. FTM and want to choose wisely!
Congratulations! Honestly, while [name_u]Ren[/name_u] isn’t my personal style I think it has a really nice sound and is easy to spell and say even if you’ve never heard it before. I might think it was [name_u]Wren[/name_u] if I was just hearing it rather than seeing it, and think it’s a bit unusual on a boy but a sweet name.
A few other names that come to mind along similar lines:
[name_u]Remy[/name_u]
[name_m]Kieren[/name_m], Evren, [name_m]Soren[/name_m] - could use [name_u]Ren[/name_u] as a nickname
[name_u]Reid[/name_u]
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m]
Also, I looove [name_u]Wren[/name_u] for a girl!
It‘s a Japanese name so if you‘re not from Japan, I’d hesitate to use it. Or use the spelling [name_m]Renn[/name_m]
I would assume it was a nickname. It looks incomplete to me. I love the suggestions of [name_m]Soren[/name_m] or Evren as a full name!
I love [name_u]Ren[/name_u]! [name_u]Renny[/name_u] is the only nickname I can think of, but it’s sweet! Spunky and cute on a girl or boy.
There’s a male character named [name_u]Ren[/name_u] in the videogame Oxenfree, that’s my only association.
I love [name_u]Ren[/name_u] and spelled either this way or [name_m]Renn[/name_m] as I would assume [name_u]Wren[/name_u] to be a girl. I don’t think [name_u]Ren[/name_u] would have a nickname other than perhaps Reny as it doesn’t need to be shortened. I like the suggestion of [name_m]SoREN[/name_m] or there is also [name_u]LawRENce[/name_u] if you wanted to use [name_u]Ren[/name_u] as a nickname.
I love [name_u]Ren[/name_u]! It is not just a Japanese name, it is a nickname for a lot of different names from different cultures. We considered [name_u]Ren[/name_u]/[name_m]Renon[/name_m] for our first baby.
I prefer “[name_u]Wren[/name_u]” for a girl, but I can see the appeal of [name_u]Ren[/name_u] for a boy, too!
And to you who commented that if “you aren’t from Japan, you should hesitate to use it”: Please look at your own signature and recognize that names from ALL cultures are beautiful and shareable!!!
[name_u]Ren[/name_u] is very handsome. It’s a great choice as a stand-alone name. It wouldn’t be out of place in Australia and I don’t think you’d have any issues with spelling of people assuming it was “[name_u]Wren[/name_u].” I think that’s overstating the popularity of [name_u]Wren[/name_u].
Some nickname ideas: [name_m]Renzo[/name_m], Renly, [name_u]Rio[/name_u], [name_u]Ray[/name_u], [name_u]Rex[/name_u]
I really like [name_u]Ren[/name_u]! It’s the main character from Footloose which is my only real connection to it. I think the only nickname you could really get from it is [name_u]Renny[/name_u] (which I’m fond of as well).
Similar names might be [name_u]Remy[/name_u] or Renly
I love [name_u]Ren[/name_u] for a boy. What a beautiful choice! I suggested [name_u]Everest[/name_u] [name_u]Ren[/name_u] to my husband but he sadly didn’t like it.
I think [name_u]Ren[/name_u] is very handsome!
I am really liking [name_u]Ren[/name_u] too. I like the sound, the simplicity of the name and also the meaning too.
The only downside I can see is the potential confusion with [name_u]Wren[/name_u] which I expect is more common. I don’t think it’s a problem but he may have to correct people spelling his name a lot.
I love [name_u]Ren[/name_u]. Reminds me of Footloose. One of my favorites for a boy, although I do like it spelled [name_u]Wren[/name_u].
It makes me think of the cartoon [name_u]Ren[/name_u] & Stimpy, which puts me off of it, personally. However, that is a dated association that is unlikely to be familiar to the vast majority of his peers, and it hasn’t yet come up in three pages of this thread, so take that with a grain of salt.
If I try to divorce it from any associations, it is a nice-sounding name. It may get mistaken for a nickname, but that doesn’t mean it has to be!
This spelling looks incomplete, I would prefer [name_u]Wren[/name_u]. I do see [name_u]Wren[/name_u] as a girls name, usually, but a TV show I watched had a male [name_u]Wren[/name_u] in it and it didn’t seem odd at all.
