Do you like the name Stephen? How would you pronounce it? spell it?

What are your thoughts on [name_m]Stephen[/name_m]/[name_m]Steven[/name_m]?

Which spelling is best? I pronounce both the same way.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think people will get [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] confused with [name_m]Stefan[/name_m]?

Any thoughts/opinions are appreciated!

Thanks so much

I like [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] but I cannot stand the [name_m]Steven[/name_m] spelling.

I dont think people would mix up [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] with [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] because it’s such a well known name.

I pronounce [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] like [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] unless told otherwise. Today, [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] ā€œ[name_u]Steph[/name_u]ā€ [name_u]Curry[/name_u] is huge (I don’t even watch basketball & I know about him) so, if you want it pronounced with V then go with [name_m]Steven[/name_m].

I’m not the biggest fan of [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] personally due to bad association with a [name_m]Steve[/name_m] but here’s my go at it:

I pronounce [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] just as I do [name_m]Steven[/name_m]; I pronounce [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] differently. I don’t think people will get confused at all. I prefer the [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] spelling, and I do like the - not hugely known, I feel - association with Dr. [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] Strange.

If I met a little [name_m]Stephen[/name_m], I wouldn’t be that surprised due to him being such a well-known and handsome name.

I pronounce [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] like [name_m]Stefan[/name_m].

I always want to pronounce [name_m]Stephan[/name_m] as [name_m]Stefan[/name_m], but I know it’s not. [name_m]Stephan[/name_m] is the more visually appealing spelling

*It strikes me as a bit older. Not ā€œolderā€ as in [name_m]George[/name_m] or [name_m]Walter[/name_m], but more like a name someone my older siblings’ ages- or even our dad’s age- would have. To be fair, I know one [name_m]Steven[/name_m] my age (early 20s) and the rest are all 30+.

*With the pronunciation problems, I think it would be easier to do as what @nat108 says, and go with the [name_m]Steven[/name_m] spelling, if you want the V sound…or if it would bother you to have people say [name_m]Stefan[/name_m].

*Yes, I do. I myself say it like ā€œ[name_u]Steph[/name_u]-inā€, until I find out the particular person says it like [name_m]Steven[/name_m].

My brother’s name is [name_m]Stephen[/name_m], pronounced [name_m]Steven[/name_m]. He’s never had problems with people calling him [name_m]Stefan[/name_m]. Everyone always pronounces it like [name_m]Steven[/name_m].

[name_m]Stephen[/name_m] = [name_m]Steven[/name_m]
[name_m]Stephan[/name_m] = [name_m]Stefan[/name_m]

I pronounce these the same. The only time I’ve heard [name_m]Stephen[/name_m]= [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] is with first language Welsh speakers, because there os no V dound in the Welsh language. For me [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] id the more ā€˜correct’ spelling, just because it is closer to the greek, but [name_m]Steven[/name_m] is equally acceptable. I’ve known people spell it both ways but its still pronounced [name_m]Steven[/name_m], [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] to me is a completely different name.

I loove lovee lovee the name [name_m]Stephen[/name_m], but much prefer the ā€œphā€ over the ā€œvā€. I’d be super suprised if someone pronounced it wrong (with the ā€œfā€ instead of the ā€œvā€ sound) since its pretty familiar to most I think.

Not too fond of it, tbh… I’m not quite sure why that’s my primary association, but it really reminds me of [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m].

I like [name_m]Steffan[/name_m] (STEFF-an) and [name_m]Steven[/name_m] (STEE-vun)…

I love it!

I prefer [name_m]Steven[/name_m] by far. I always want to pronounce [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] as [name_m]Stefan[/name_m].

I can’t imagine [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] ever being mispronounced as it’s so well known. I’m fine with either spelling but I think [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] is more common than [name_m]Steven[/name_m].

I love the name [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] and definitely prefer it to the [name_m]Steven[/name_m] spelling. [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] has been pronounced like [name_m]Steven[/name_m] long before people began to pronounce it as [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] (the international version). There is also [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] Amell, [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] [name_m]Colbert[/name_m], [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] Hawking & [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m], so I think people will pronounce it correctly.

Isn’t there just one obvious way to pronounce the name?

I went to school with a lot of Stephens and Stevens, and they all pronounced their names the same way. So I’d pronounce them the same, not like [name_m]Stefan[/name_m].

I personally prefer the [name_m]Steven[/name_m] spelling, but it only matters which one you prefer! Either way, it’s a handsome name.

I don’t care for either [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] or [name_m]Steven[/name_m], although I’ve found those called [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] are nicer than tough [name_m]Steve[/name_m]. If that helps. Lol.

I know a LOT of people called this, both spellings, both pronounced the same (like [name_m]Steven[/name_m]), and all different ages from 20 to 60. Never a [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] spelt [name_m]Stephen[/name_m].

I have this and have been reared and addressed with the ambiguity of it STEEV-ən/STeF-ən. I can be contrastable with the ā€œVā€ spelling" The ā€œphanā€ and ā€œfanā€ can be ā€œSTe’Fahnā€ pronounced.

I love the name [name_m]Stephen[/name_m], spelled this way, and pronounced [name_m]Steven[/name_m].

Unfortunately, today’s kids (I’m a teacher) all think [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] is pronounced [name_m]Stefan[/name_m] because of [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] [name_u]Curry[/name_u]. They will argue with you about how to say [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] Crane’s name, for example.
