I know it sounds strange , but do you see names in color? Does a name evoke color? I am not talking about obvious names like [name]Violet[/name] , but ,for example a name I like is [name]Anne[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name] and it looks red & black to me. I find it interesting to associate a name with color. What do you think?
Yes. Not everyone does, though. It’s called synesthesia, and there are many different forms. Some people see each letter as a different color, others see the whole word or name as one color or a blend of colors. I know it’s not the most reputable source always, but Wikipedia has a pretty legit page about it. You can read up on it here: Synesthesia - Wikipedia
There’s plenty of people who see names as colors here on nameberry… I even wrote a guest blog about it once under my old username, [name]Grey[/name]. What’s great about it is our perceptions are almost always different. For instance [name]Anne[/name] to me is turquoise blue (spelled without the E it’s baby pink, I don’t know why) and [name]Cordelia[/name] is eggplant purple with hints of gold, whereas you see red and black. It’s always fun to compare!
I don’t necessarily associate every single name with a specific color, but most names do remind me of a certain color.
Like, [name]Valerie[/name], for instances, is yellow to me. It reminds me of a sunny day in late [name]September[/name], and the sound of water against rocks on a shore. It also reminds me of a field of tiny yellow flowers blowing gently in the wind.
Anevay reminds me of the sepia filter you have on your camera. Beautiful. This probably has to do with the fact that it was my grandmother’s name.
[name]Karen[/name] gives me a reddish orange feeling. [name]Daniel[/name] reminds me of black and brown. [name]Karolyn[/name] is white, pink, and yellow.
[name]Vivian[/name] is definitely a deep, violet purple to me. So is [name]Timothea[/name], [name]Andromeda[/name], [name]Alessandra[/name].
Loved reading your blog [name]Kaitlin[/name]! Thanks!!
Like greyer I see names in colour too.
rollo
I see names in colours (and textures) too Some people ‘taste’ names.
[name]Anne[/name] is a bright golden yellow to me, given that depth of colour by the ‘e’ (which I see on its own as a dark blue- [name]Ellen[/name] and [name]Elspeth[/name] are both very blue names to me). [name]Ann[/name] is a dull orange-y yellow. [name]Cordelia[/name] is sky blue, more or less, light and fluffy light like a sunny day with pretty clouds dotting the sky.
I don’t “see” a color, but I associate a name with a certain color. Most A names are red to me, R is usually royal blue, G green, O black, L pink, P pink or orange, E & F yellow, etc…
I don’t see names in colour, they more provoke images in my head. For example the name [name]David[/name] makes me see a tall stone caste. The name [name]Jane[/name] makes me see a path through the woods. [name]Anne[/name] makes me see a messy bakery kitchen. I don’t know why each name makes me see those things.
It happens more strongly with numbers for me, numbers not only make me see and image but actually have feelings about the number. For example the number 8 makes me see fire and feel rather angry, where as the number 9 is a calm island in the middle of the ocean and makes me feel peace.
I’m weird I know, haha.
[name]Anne[/name] is orange
[name]Cordelia[/name] is white with hints of other colours in
I’m skeptical of whether a person is truly synesthetic
Studies show that many synesthetes “see” A as red. But think back to when you were little. In school there were posters with the alphabet, what color was the A? In children’s ABC books, what color was A? Almost always A was red. They may say “A feels crisp”. We teach kids the “A is for apple” often with a picture of a red apple. So are these people truly seeing A or is it that childhood influence?
What if we decide that “A is for ant” and have all the schools and children’s books use a black A with a picture of a black ant? In 20yrs will the majority of synesthetes say “A is black” or “A feels tiny”?
What about people who are projectors? If you don’t know what a projector is- It is a synesthete that actually sees the colours and patterns outside their body instead of in their minds eye.
Like jazz1509, I don’t physically see the colours, names and words and letters just are coloured. They aren’t associated either. They just ‘are’.
I didn’t find out synesthesia was a thing until I was 19 or so. Someone on a name board mentioned it to me after I made a coloured comment, not realizing not everyone sees names in colours, lol.
I have a mild form of sound->taste, too.
Some of my numbers are coloured. 7 and 3 are green, and they’re my favourites. E is also green and there are way more E names on my list than any other letter. I’m just realizing this green connection now, haha. [name]Green[/name] isn’t even my favourite colour, I just like it when names are green.
I don’t actually physically see letters, numerals or names in color, but there is a mild perception that they are colored. For me, the stronger impression though is that letters, numerals, names, animals and colors have gender, and in some cases, personality. 0,1,3, 5, 6, and 7 are male; 2, 4, 8, and 9 are female. Sticking to basic colors, red, blue, green and purple are female; orange, yellow, brown, black, and white are male. A purple zero just looks inherently wrong to me. All ostriches, racoons and dolphins are female; all hamsters, squirrels, pigs, and octopi are male. A B is a jolly man who is hardworking; an L is a male professorial type; a K is a no-nonsense kind of woman, but very kind.
With regard to names, it’s rather odd. There’s a difference between my synesthesia-related perceptions and my (societal?) perceptions. For example, [name]Christopher[/name] seems more ‘masculine’ than [name]Felix[/name], and it’s this sense that I use when I think about sibsets. But [name]Christopher[/name] ‘just is’ female and [name]Felix[/name] ‘just is’ male. I have to pay more attention, but when I do, I realize that [name]Christopher[/name] ‘is’ a bright, rich yellow, and [name]Felix[/name] is olive-green.
My dh thinks it’s weird, but as an adult, I don’t think about it much…it’s just there in the background. When I was a little girl though, I remember being puzzled by it. I didn’t understand why baby boys were dressed in blue, when blue was obviously ‘a girl’ just like pink was. It seemed weird to me that A was the first letter, since A was a girl and 1 was a boy.
Sometimes it seems that these could simply be early associations—my mother’s kitchen counters were red–so is that why red seems female to me? Maybe. But alpacas seem female too…and I don’t think I knew what an alpaca was till I was in my twenties.
For some names I see colours, but mostly I just get a feeling and an image in my head. Usually they can translate into colours, most of the names I like are in green, blue and purple range.
[name_u]Clove[/name_u] - grey
[name_f]Morwenna[/name_f] - something between dark red and black
[name_f]Charlize[/name_f] - gold
Nevena - orange
Rusalka - red
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] - blue
Anemonie - red
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] - pink
[name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] - pink
[name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] - blue
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] - orange
[name_f]Cora[/name_f] - red
As a fellow synesthaete, I really identified with the other posters, although reading about other peoples’ colours and imageries for certain names makes me cringe! [name_m]How[/name_m] could [name_f]Seraphina[/name_f] possibly be anything other than pale yellow?
Each name has a vivid and colourful portrait for me: the combination of the colour and texture of the name, with the other associations I may have with it (such as historical era, or cultural associations…). For example, [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], one of my favourite names, is a silvery-brown colour, and conjures up an image of a girl with a glossy brown plait and an inquiring white face, walking through silvery birch trees.
All numbers have colour to me, too, and the numbers up to 10 are like a classroom of children with genders and personalities. 2 for example is banana yellow, and is a sweet, goofy, energetic little girl.
I see names as colours as well!! I see both letters and words having colours, so the letter E on it’s own is a bright red but the name [name_f]Emily[/name_f] is yellow. But sometimes I think the colour of certain letters does influence the word because A is a peachy pink and so are a lot of A names to me, like [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], and if a name has a lot of S or C I’ll probably see it as yellow ([name_f]Cecily[/name_f], [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f]). It’s really interesting to hear what colours other people see for names!!
Yes, this happens to me as well. It somehow influences if I eventually like the name or not. For instance brown is my least favourite colour and, being a coincidence, names that remind me of it do not appeal to me. Sometimes it helps me pair names in combinations. I think the reason behind it is my hobby of drawing so I associate everything with colours from a very early age
I see most names as colours, some have different imagery e.g. [name_m]Jack[/name_m] reminds me of a person but [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m] reminds me of navy blue. My favourite names are usually colours that I particularly like too.
Wow, I see names as colors too! [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] are yellow to me–[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is pale yellow and [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is more golden. [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] are like pale pink icing. [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] is purple, like an iris. [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is a rich sage. [name_m]Casper[/name_m] is icy blue, almost white.
