Do you think Margot sounds like maggot?

Hello, i’ve noticed a lot of English speakers think the name [name_f]Margot[/name_f] sounds like maggot, do you agree? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like this name or do you think it’s ugly?

Thank you.

I don’t think so at all- it’s a silent T.

I don’t think that when I hear it at all. I personally loved it for a season but now I don’t love the hard g sound, but that’s me…

It’s meant to be pronounced to rhyme with cargo; the -t is silent. I’ve never heard anyone mention a similarity in sound between [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and maggot, and I live in an English speaking country. They are, however, visually only one letter away from each other. I personally like the name. If you are worried about possible mispronunciations in your language, maybe spell it [name_f]Margo[/name_f] (I prefer [name_f]Margot[/name_f], myself, and don’t think that it’s pronunciation would be commonly botched)

Not at all to my ears as, like pp have stated, the t is silent. However, it does look similar to maggot which is why I personally prefer the [name_f]Margo[/name_f] spelling.

In sound, not at all! I used to have reservations about that spelling in particular and its similarity to maggot, but I’ve pretty much gotten over that, even though I still prefer an alternate spelling.

I actually laughed when I saw this post title. No way! I’m not sure if you mean English/American or English/[name_f]England[/name_f], but this English speaking American knows it’s pronounced [name_f]Margo[/name_f]. I really like it as a first name.

I think if you mispronounced it - ie, said the t, it would sound a bit like maggot. But the t is silent, and its a lovely name.

if you think it sounds like maggot, you’re saying it wrong.

[name_f]Margot[/name_f] sounds nothing at all like maggot.

In a word - yes.

Maybe to not to hear, but when I see it, thats all I can think of. I hate to use the word ugly but since you mentioned it yourself I kind of do see it that way.

I don’t think it sounds so much like maggot though, its just way too outdated imo. I really hope I haven’t offended anyone and please bare in mind this is just my opinion! It’s a name thats becoming increasingly popular lately so I’m sure the majority will like it! And no one is going to love every single name!

Thanks for all the replies. I’m actually [name_m]French[/name_m] and in [name_f]France[/name_f] it’s a normal name .I was reading some messages from English speakers and some of them were saying it sounds like maggot that’s why i asked the question. In [name_f]France[/name_f] we also use [name_f]Margaux[/name_f].

Of course not.

Not at all. If your are concerned I think PP
who suggested [name_f]Margo[/name_f] is a great idea.
If you love [name_f]Margot[/name_f] I’d definitely go [name_f]Margot[/name_f].
[name_m]How[/name_m] would the [name_f]Margaux[/name_f] spelling go in your
part of the world? I love it but its maybe not your taste?

As other posters have said, the name is pronounced like [name_f]Margo[/name_f], with the T being silent. I do think that the spelling looks similar to maggot, and also makes me want to say the name mar-get (like market with a G) which is why I much prefer the [name_f]Margo[/name_f] spelling.

No…No one says this about [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] and it is a lot closer… [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is beautiful!

[name_f]Margot[/name_f]/[name_f]Margo[/name_f]/[name_f]Margaux[/name_f] are pronounced the same, the final t of [name_f]Margot[/name_f] is silent. I have never thought of the connection but it definitely reminds me of maggot when I see it written. [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and its variations never appealed to me, though

I don’t think so. As other members have pointed out, the T is silent. I like this name and I associate it with [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Robbie[/name_u] and [name_f]Margo[/name_f] Fonteyn. [name_f]Margo[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaux[/name_f] are alternative spellings - though English speakers might find the latter hard to pronounce.

I don’t think “maggot” would have occurred to me if it wasn’t pointed out. I think you could come up with an unpleasant association for pretty much any name.

Not since I know the -t is silent, but it DOES look like a maggot, which is why I cannot like this name.

It doesn’t sound like maggot because the t is silent but now that it’s been pointed out it does look like maggot. I prefer the [name_f]Margo[/name_f] and [name_f]Margaux[/name_f] spellings.
