Does Harrison always become Harry?

I am due any day now (#3 baby, 1st boy) and our son does not have a name! [name]Harrison[/name] is a family name and have been set on using for quite sometime but now my dh has decided that we can’t use it bc he really dislikes the nn [name]Harry[/name]. And he thinks that he will definitely get shortened to [name]Harry[/name]. Apparently every jerk he’s mentioned the name [name]Harrison[/name] to has said something like - little [name]Harry[/name]!

I say he won’t get a shortened name if we stick strictly to [name]Harrison[/name]. Or at least until he’s old enough to choose if he wants a nn. What is the consensus among all of you? Who’s right?

Or should we just skip [name]Harrison[/name] bc it’s “on the rise” and opt for another choice? We’ve also discussed [name]Harris[/name], [name]Davis[/name] and briefly knox, [name]Rowan[/name] and [name]Jack[/name]. Any suggestions based on those likes? DH wants a strong name and not a wimpy meaning either (so weird its ehy he doesnt love rowan) We’re totally open at this point! Thanks for the input!

If your husband is looking for names that mean strong in some way…

[name]Everett[/name]
[name]Harvey[/name]
[name]Griffith[/name]
Forney
[name]Peter[/name]
[name]Willard[/name]

Names that have a tough feel…
[name]Archer[/name]
[name]Axel[/name]
[name]Brent[/name]
[name]Garrett[/name]
[name]Jagger[/name]
[name]Lawton[/name]
[name]Radcliff[/name]
[name]Ryder[/name]
[name]Stone[/name]
[name]Sullivan[/name]
[name]Tanner[/name]
[name]Tucker[/name]
[name]Walker[/name]
[name]Wolfe[/name]
[name]Xander[/name]
[name]Zane[/name]

And yes I do think [name]Harrison[/name] becomes [name]Harry[/name], especially among a child’s playmates.

I know a [name]Harrison[/name] who’s 27. I’ve known him since I was a teenager and I have never in my life heard anyone refer to him as [name]Harry[/name]. His name is [name]Harrison[/name]. I think it’s a pretty great name, personally. If you like it I saw use it.

I went to school with a guy called [name]Harrison[/name] and we always called him [name]Harry[/name] but a little boy I work with is named [name]Harrison[/name] and goes by [name]Rhys[/name] so that’s an optiion

I also went to school with someone named [name]Harrison[/name], and I never once heard anyone ever call him [name]Harry[/name]. But the fact remains that [name]Harry[/name] is a nn for [name]Harrison[/name] and there will be people who will call him that whether you want them to or not. You can correct them all you want, but I guarantee someone will use it.

I liked the suggestion of [name]Everett[/name].

I would never shorten [name]Harrison[/name] to [name]Harry[/name]. Partly because I believe [name]Harry[/name] doesn’t compare to the greatness of [name]Harrison[/name]. Im sure there will always be people (the ones who just love nicknames) that will always start o call him Hrry. [name]Just[/name] correct them from the start, and they’ll get the picture he is a [name]Harrison[/name]- not a [name]Harry[/name].

I also know a [name]Harrison[/name] (21 year old cousin) who never gets called [name]Harry[/name].

[name]Just[/name] wanted to join in the chorus, I also know a [name]Harrison[/name] (in his late 20s) who only goes by [name]Harrison[/name].

It’s kind of random, but I went to school with a [name]Harrison[/name] who went by [name]Hank[/name]. So that’s an option I guess, lol.

I have a 3 year old nephew named [name]Harrison[/name] and that’s all he is called. Great name!

Would you consider [name]Hal[/name] as a nn? I think most people will be respectful when you emphasize that [name]Harrison[/name] goes by his full name, not [name]Harry[/name].

Of your other choices, I like [name]Davis[/name].

The only [name]Harrison[/name] I’ve ever known always went by [name]Harrison[/name], never [name]Harry[/name] or any other nicknames. I definitely think that you can avoid nicknames with [name]Harrison[/name] if you want to. To me, it’s not the same as trying to stop people from calling a [name]David[/name] [name]Dave[/name] or a [name]Samuel[/name] [name]Sam[/name], which I think would be a lot harder.

If he think that [name]Rowan[/name] is sort of wimpy, maybe he might like [name]Ronan[/name] as an alternative?

I know one [name]Harrison[/name] too, and he goes by [name]Harrison[/name]. It’s an amazing name! And how cool is [name]Harrison[/name] [name]Ford[/name]?

I’m a bit late on this, but I definitely don’t think [name]Harrison[/name] would be a problem to use. You could certainly just tell people you prefer to use his full name. Since you are especially against [name]Harry[/name], and that will undoubtedly be the nn people default to, I would suggest finding another nn you like a bit better. That way if someone decided they want to call him something shorter you could just say “Oh actually he doesn’t go by [name]Harry[/name] but we sometimes call him…” [name]Hal[/name], [name]Rhys[/name], etc. I think a super cute nn choice would be [name]Sonny[/name]!
Other options you may like with strong meanings are [name]Louis[/name], [name]Viggo[/name], [name]Gavin[/name], or [name]Riley[/name]. Good luck! =]

My kiddo is a [name]Harrison[/name]. Does not go by [name]Harry[/name]-unless it is on his terms.

I know a [name]Harrison[/name] and he is never called [name]Harry[/name]. [name]True[/name], sometimes we call him Hair [name]Bear[/name] but he never ever goes by [name]Harry[/name].

[name]Every[/name] [name]Harrison[/name] I know shortened their name to [name]Harry[/name]. It really depends on what you call him and what your family calls him, as well as what his friends call him. I had a friend named [name]Elizabeth[/name], and she hated being called anything but [name]Elizabeth[/name], yet when she was around her dad, he’d call her [name]Lizzie[/name].

So if you call him [name]Harrison[/name], he won’t become [name]Harry[/name] unless that’s what his friends want to call him, but around you he can just be [name]Harrison[/name].

To be perfectly honest, my nephew is [name]Harrison[/name] and my brother/sister in law swore up and down her entire pregnancy that noone would ever call him [name]Harry[/name] - and it is ALL he is ever called. They even call him [name]Harry[/name]. In my opinion, it was unavoidable but they also didn’t do anything to stop it once he was born. On the other hand, there is a [name]Harrison[/name] at my son’s soccer school and I have never heard him called [name]Harry[/name] so…I guess it depends on the family.

My cousin’s son [name]Harrison[/name] goes by [name]Hank[/name] and I think it’s super cute!!

There’s a handful of Harrisons at my high school. None of them are ever called [name]Harry[/name].
