So my husband and I are both really loving the name [name]Leo[/name] for a boy. He prefers [name]Leopold[/name] with [name]Leo[/name] being a nickname but I think it’s a bit much.
Anyway, I am just not sure how well it goes with out last name. It’s [name]Nguyen[/name] pronounced [name]Win[/name]. Does [name]Leo[/name] [name]Nguyen[/name] sound awful? This is really the first name we have both agreed on that we both equally love so I am pretty discouraged! What do you guys think?
I prefer [name]Leopold[/name] with your last name. [name]Leo[/name] [name]Nguyen[/name] runs together and almost sounds like one name. That isn’t too terrible, though. I wouldn’t let it stop you from using [name]Leo[/name] if that’s the name you both really love!
(The nerd in me would like to add that [name]Leo[/name] [name]Nguyen[/name] sounds like it should be a name from [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings- but then it would be spelled [name]Le[/name]”wyn :geek:)
[name]Hi[/name] TexasWillow, so you’re having a boy, then? Personally, I just love [name]Leo[/name] with your surname. [name]Leopold[/name] is just too clunky for my taste. [name]Leo[/name] is quirky, spunky and has lots of energy. Since most people hesitate when saying first and last names, it doesn’t bother me that [name]Leo[/name] [name]Nguyen[/name] runs together a bit. I also like the way [name]Leo[/name] [name]Nguyen[/name] looks written out and it sounds really cool. [name]Leopold[/name] [name]Nguyen[/name] just looks like too much of name to me. If you’re going to end up calling him [name]Leo[/name] anyway, just choose [name]Leo[/name]! All the best!
[name]Leopold[/name] nn [name]Leo[/name] is one of my favorites. Either name sounds good, but I always think a 1 syllable last name needs a longer formal first name.
I think [name]Leopold[/name] with [name]Leo[/name] as a nn sounds great with your last name. Since both [name]Leo[/name] and [name]Nguyen[/name] are one syllable, it would be nice to have his full name be longer.
I am still so torn on this name! I love it but I keep going back and forth on whether I think it runs too much with our last name. I really appreciate the replies so far but they seem to be pretty mixed!
I don’t see it running together at all. [name]Leo[/name] is the name [name]Leo[/name]. [name]Nguyen[/name] is the name [name]Nguyen[/name]. I can see a name like [name]Leo[/name] [name]Olson[/name] running together, but not [name]Leo[/name] [name]Nguyen[/name].
I guess what I mean by running together is it almost just sounds like one name. Leowin. Almost tolkein-like as someone else mentioned.
Also, would I be stuck with using shorter names for future siblings? [name]Evangeline[/name] Somerset is the front runner for a girl but is that just too long next to [name]Leo[/name] [name]Alexander[/name]? Although the nicknames [name]Evie[/name] and [name]Leo[/name] are adorable I have to admit
I understand that your concern is that it may sound like one (unusual) name instead of two distinct names. I am just not someone who would hear it that way. I am familiar with both names. Plus, [name]Leo[/name] is a terrific name that I like enough to use for a son myself. It might only be three letters, but it is a two-syllable name. The length would not deter me from using it – especially with a longer than average (4-syllable) middle name like [name]Alexander[/name]! [name]Leo[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] is stunning. Although, I prefer [name]Leo[/name], using [name]Leopold[/name] as the official name would be okay too. He will fare well with either one. You are putting a lot of thought and care into the name, so I am sure you will end up with a great name for your son.
It is important that you love the name and feel a sense of belonging with it. I look forward to hearing what you ultimately decide.
[name]Leopold[/name] [name]Nguyen[/name] sounds much better. If you hate [name]Leopold[/name] and he is going to be [name]Leo[/name] [name]Nguyen[/name] all of the time anyway, then I don’t see anything wrong with going with [name]Leo[/name] if you feel good about it.
I agree with the other posters about Leowyn sounding… very Tolkein (there is a character named [name]Eowyn[/name]…) and it does run together a bit which is why I prefer [name]Leopold[/name]. =)
