Ok so I love the song and the name [name]Rhiannon[/name] (Re-an-non) but I HATE the singer [name]Rihanna[/name] (Re-on-ah) with a passion. [name]Do[/name] they look or sound too similar? I would hate it if [name]Rhiannon[/name] would be associated with [name]Rihanna[/name].
I pronounce [name]Rihanna[/name] ree-ah-nah and [name]Rhiannon[/name] ree-an-on, so yes, they sound quite similar to me. However, they look and feel totally different. Also, I wouldn’t expect many people to make the connection. Unless the similarity personally bothers you, don’t worry about others assuming you named your [name]Rhiannon[/name] after [name]Rihanna[/name].
I can only speak for myself, but I can’t see [name]Rhiannon[/name] without automatically thinking of [name]Rihanna[/name]. Also, I know it’s usually pronounced Ri-on-uh, but I’m pretty sure that she actually pronounces her name Ri-an-uh. I think that most people would associate [name]Rhiannon[/name] with [name]Rihanna[/name]. That will fade with time, I’m sure, but I know I would hate to tell people my baby’s name and have them think of [name]Rihanna[/name]. I hate her too.
I [name]LOVE[/name] the name/song [name]Rhiannon[/name] and understand the desire to avoid a [name]Rihanna[/name] reference, but I personally don’t associate with them. Maybe because I’m 27, so I had years pre-[name]Rihanna[/name] to not associate them and also because I love [name]Fleetwood[/name] [name]Mac[/name] and had a friend whose sister was named [name]Rhiannon[/name] (they were Welsh). I don’t personally associate them, but going forward kids that are just being born may only think of [name]Rihanna[/name] since [name]Fleetwood[/name] [name]Mac[/name] will have been ‘before their time’. Sad.
Still, even with the association I [name]LOVE[/name] this name and think it’s a good choice.
I agree with the first poster - I pronounce [name]Rhiannon[/name] as ree-an-on, and [name]Rhianna[/name] as ree-ah-na. I personally don’t like the name in the slightest - it’s got all of my least favourite sounds, ree and anne, and sounds like a smush of [name]Rhianna[/name] and [name]Shannon[/name], my least favourite names (even though I know it definitely isn’t, I just can’t help thinking that).
Anyway, that’s beside the point. I don’t think that they are too similar in the way they look, but I definitely sound similar. I suppose if you did choose it though, I’m fairly certain that it would sound nothing like [name]Rhianna[/name] to you any more. You would probably find your self thinking of your little [name]Rhiannon[/name] when you hear [name]Rhianna[/name], rather than the reverse!
[name]Rhiannon[/name] was a top contender if my son had been a girl. We pronounced it ree-an-en, kind of. Either way, it was nothing like [name]Rhianna[/name]. It’s similar in look and sound, perhaps, but I doubt most people will think you named her after the singer. (Who I also despise, don’t worry.) .
You can speak for me! That’s my opinion exactly. I hate [name]Rihanna[/name] so much, her songs set such a bad example for the girls who look up to her. “[name]Love[/name] the [name]Way[/name] You Lie”, “S&M”, and “[name]Rude[/name] Boy”, just to name a few. Who the heck glorifies sadism & masochism?! Especially since she’s been a domestic abuse victim herself! [name]Rhiannon[/name] is a pretty name, but like lyndsayjenness said, I couldn’t stand having people associate it with [name]Rihanna[/name]. Sorry
The origins of the names are completely different. [name]Rhiannon[/name] is of Welsh origin and it means queen. I don’t know what [name]Rihanna[/name] means but I believe it is of Arab origin. One of my pet peeves is when [name]Rihanna[/name] is mispelled [name]Rhianna[/name]. [name]Rhianna[/name] is my daughters name and she absolutely hates it when people associate her name with [name]Rihanna[/name]. She was named [name]Rhianna[/name] long before [name]Rihanna[/name] came on the scene. I have asked her if she would have liked to have been named something else, she says no she loves her name. There is a British singer named [name]Rhianna[/name] also. My advice is if you love [name]Rhiannon[/name], use it. It has a long history, and been used for centuries. Tell anyone who asks you were inspired by Welsh mythology or [name]Stevie[/name] Nicks.
I love the name [name]Rhiannon[/name] (I live in [name]Wales[/name] so it’s kind of a favourite of mine) and even though I’m still really young (18) and I probably hear a [name]Rihanna[/name] song 6 days a week I don’t associate them at all. I hope you use it, even if the association some people make bothers you maybe she could use the nn [name]Non[/name] or [name]Nonna[/name], or even [name]Ann[/name] or [name]Annie[/name] could work.

Honestly, I do associate [name]Rhiannon[/name] and [name]Rihanna[/name], even though I know they are said quite differently. In this day and age with such a pop culture influence, I think it’s an expected association by most people. I’m sorry.
This. I can’t help but think of [name]Rihanna[/name] when I see [name]Rhiannon[/name].
[name]Rhiannon[/name] should be said like it rhymes with [name]Shannon[/name]. I don’t think it’s that similar in sound to [name]Rihanna[/name], but I think it is in looks. I think it may take a double take when reading it off a list for some people, but I don’t think it’s that big a deal. I mean, it wouldn’t look like you were using the name to honor the singer…it’s not like a copycat name.
My daughter was born 02/10/2011 we named her [name]Rhiannon[/name] [name]Trinity[/name] EVERYONE calls her [name]Rhianna[/name]. Half the people can not pronounce it and say some crazy things. [name]Rhiannon[/name] is a beautiful name and I do not regret naming her it but it does getting annoying! The comparisons and the not being able to pronounce it! She will probably never know her name though because I just call her Rhi.
I wouldn’t worry about it if you really love the name, I love [name]Rhiannon[/name] & dislike [name]Rihanna[/name]. They have totally different feels to me, [name]Rhiannon[/name] has a wonderful meaning also.
I love the name [name]Rhiannon[/name], but when I suggested it to my husband, his first thought was [name]Rihanna[/name]. I don’t have that association because I knew a [name]Rhiannon[/name] before [name]Rihanna[/name] came out. His association with it was very strong though.
