Dolores?

What do you guys think of [name]Dolores[/name]? Is it still too old lady? What would you name her brothers and sisters? I really like [name]Dolores[/name] but I’m not sure it fits in with my other favorite girl names like [name]Louisa[/name] and [name]Anneliese[/name], it just doesn’t seem as girlie to me but I wanted to get your opinions

[name]Dolores[/name] is one of my fave Spanish names. It’s a rare name that means “sorrows” and is often given in honor of the Virgin [name]Mary[/name]. It does have a vintage charm to it and great nn options like [name]Dolly[/name] and [name]Lola[/name]/[name]Lolita[/name]. [name]Dolores[/name] would be ok with [name]Louisa[/name] and [name]Anneliese[/name] but not ideal. I don’t know if [name]Louisa[/name] and [name]Anneliese[/name] would be good together either as they’re matchy in sound. Here are some sibling names from the vintage, Hispanic and Celtic style families that would go well with [name]Dolores[/name].

I can’t get past the meaning - pains or sorrows. It’s not like some names where the meaning is obscure. No, [name]Dolores[/name] is the Spanish word for pain, as in “Ya me est”n empezando los dolores de parto.” (My labor pains are starting now.)

I love [name]Dolores[/name]! I think it’s the old lady charm that I love, too.

There is a Seinfeld episode that is about a name that rhymes with a female body part. That name is [name]Dolores[/name]. As someone else said, it means pains in Spanish. I would not use it.

I like this name OK. I think it makes more sense to use it in a religious context - the reference to sorrows and pains is more neutral or even positive rather than negative in that context. Anyone have insight into whether native Spanish speakers use the name or not? I speak Spanish fluently (but not as a first language), and the association isn’t that strong, because in English it sounds really not that like the Spanish word.

I think the Seinfeld episode will fade from memory well enough and/or not be well-known to kids as much as to adults. It’s a factor, but I don’t think it has to completely ruin the name for everyone. It’s not like the rhyme is that immediately obvious, that was part of the point of the episode, that [name]Jerry[/name] couldn’t figure out what it was. Also, the rhyme is more with the English prn (maybe even spelled [name]Delores[/name] - even then, the stress pattern is all wrong, at least from the usual prns of the name and the word), not the Spanish (although then the Spanish prn is closer to the pain/sorrow meaning).

I like the nickname [name]Lola[/name] a lot. You can also get that in my mind from [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Louisa[/name], and [name]Penelope[/name], and probably more. Nickname [name]Dolly[/name] is OK to my taste, I know some people really love it, you can also get that from [name]Dahlia[/name] and maybe [name]Laura[/name]/[name]Laurel[/name]/[name]Lauren[/name] ([name]Lolly[/name]-[name]Dolly[/name]) and maybe some others.

The name does get lower-than-average love (most names hover around 75%) from people who are actually named it:

All best!

If it helps, in the UK [name]Dolores[/name] doesn’t rhyme with the part of the female body on the Seinfeld episode. I had to look it up and then realised that body part is pronounced differently in the US.

Is it really though? I live in the US and don’t prn them like they rhyme : D.

It’s really probably a word one reads more than says and hears.

A little spelunking: one has the UK prn as REALLY different! I had no idea : D. But there are still two prns left listed on the page I’m looking at, and in the US I’ve only ever heard the one that puts the stress on the first syllable, which is in fact listed first. I guess the second-syllable-stress one is out there…but I’d venture rarely.

I’m from the UK and have only ever heard the stress on the second syllable: dol-LOR-es. Kind of like [name]Mercedes[/name].

Ha ha - sorry, no, I agree on do LOR es. I think that’s universal in English, although I think it would be [name]DO[/name] lor es in Spanish?

I’m referring to the stress on the part of the female anatomy it famously supposedly rhymed with on an episode of Seinfeld.

It’s [name]DoLOres[/name] in Spanish. Stress on the second syllable. It’s not a popular name among little girls in Spanish-speaking countries. The first thought that pops into my mind when I think of a [name]Dolores[/name] is Argentine TV chef Dolli Irigoyen: http://www.dolliirigoyen.com/

I don’t care for [name]Dolores[/name]. It’s one of those names that tend to be bellowed across store aisles. (adults, not kids)

This name reminds me of old ladies pretty much. I am not a fan of it- It is one of my least favorite commonly heard names. The nicknames ( [name]Lolita[/name], [name]Lola[/name] are much more fun) but this is a name I don’t see as feminine or pretty in any way.

I`m from a Spanish- speaking country, and is not commonly heard among little girls, and of course the first thing that comes to my mind is pain! The nickname [name]Lola[/name], is lovely, but a bit trendy rigth now.
I think that there are other Spanish word names, that sound better…

For example:
[name]Esperanza[/name] (hope)
[name]Paz[/name] (peace)
[name]Cielo[/name] (sky)
[name]Amparo[/name] (refuge)
[name]Flor[/name] (flower)
[name]Luz[/name] (ligth)
[name]Mar[/name] (sea)
Soleadad (solitude)
[name]Candela[/name] (candle)
[name]Pilar[/name] (pillar) - My own name…
[name]Milagros[/name] (miracles)
[name]Libertad[/name] (freedom)

On the other hand, [name]Dolores[/name], [name]Louisa[/name] and [name]Annelise[/name] are not a good sibset! I think they are too different!

Good [name]Luck[/name]!!

Umbridge. As in the wicked evil teacher/Ministry toad (in looks) from [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name].

I’m sorry, but the Seinfeld episode immediately comes to mind when I hear [name]Dolores[/name]. Your daughter’s peer group wouldn’t likely be familiar with this, but many of their parents would, and I just don’t think I could use it as a result. [name]Just[/name] my two cents!
