Dolores

I’m not a big fan of a lot of the “old lady names” that have recently experienced a revival - [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. But I love [name_f]Dolores[/name_f], which seems to be still considered irredeemably geriatric! I think it has such a lovely, rolling sound. I’m curious whether you consider it usable, and if you have nickname suggestions that might make it feel more current - for example, do you think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] could work as a nickname for [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]?

Nicknames…

Lo
[name_f]Lola[/name_f]
[name_f]Dolly[/name_f]
[name_f]Lolita[/name_f]

I don’t like it, myself, but I’m biased because I speak [name_m]French[/name_m] and it reminds me of the word ‘douleur’, which means ‘pain’, and its meaning isn’t far from that. If I separate it from its meaning I do see its aesthetic appeal (the rolling sound of it, like you mention), and I do think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] would be a viable nickname for it.

[name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Dolly[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] ”

I love [name_f]Dolores[/name_f], despite the meaning of pain/sorrow. It’s a [name_u]Marian[/name_u] title (Our Lady of the Sorrows) but to me it’s very positive. The sorrows are the ones that faith in God remove from us, so I really like it.

In Spanish the automatic nickname for [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] is [name_f]Lola[/name_f], with the variation of [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] (I wouldn’t use this outside of home though) and Dolo (doh-loh), as in the “lo” in [name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m].

I do think [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], [name_f]Lori[/name_f] or [name_u]Rory[/name_u] work, but [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is my favorite.

Someone reads their Nabokov! I think he chose the name for the character largely because of all the nickname possibilities. I like Lo, but the others feel very '50s to me still.

Yeah, I speak [name_m]French[/name_m] as well, so I do hear the “suffering” meaning. There’s also the fact that it sounds exactly like the English word “dolorous” except with a different stressed syllable. Another reason Nabokov chose it!

I don’t think it’s too ‘old lady’ to work, in fact I don’t think many if any names are. But it does remind me of [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] Umbridge from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m], and I absolutely loath her, so I dislike it. I think it actually has a pleasant sound, just not so great associations or meaning. I’d probably consider if it weren’t for the character. Not that I think many people would necessarily automatically connect the two, but I would.

I love that that there are so many nickname options for it! My favorite is the nn [name_f]Lori[/name_f].

I don’t like this name at all. It is literally the word pain in Spanish. My husband had a neighbor in Mexico named [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] and her nickname was [name_f]Lola[/name_f].

[name_f]Dolores[/name_f] has always bren a favourite of mine! It is such a beautiful name with lots of possible nicknames - [name_f]Dolly[/name_f], [name_f]Lori[/name_f], [name_f]Loli[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lora[/name_f].

[name_u]Rory[/name_u], [name_f]Lori[/name_f], [name_f]Essie[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], and more could work in a pinch, though to me, the name screams equal parts “old lady” and “evil [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character”

I had no idea about the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character - haven’t read the series. I was more worried about the [name_f]Lolita[/name_f] connection! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to hear people seem to think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] could work, though.

All I can think about is [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] Umbridge from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].

[name_f]Dolores[/name_f] is fine but [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is a poor nickname for it.

I love [name_f]Lori[/name_f] as a nn! One of my best friend’s is called [name_f]Lori[/name_f] as a first name, and I’ve always liked it.

I love the name [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]. It was my grandma’s name, and we used it for our daughter, [name_f]Evelina[/name_f] [name_f]Dolores[/name_f]. Because I have a personal reference, I think of it as the spunky, cool girl. She’s one of the guys. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is a cute nickname, but maybe a bit of a stretch. My grandma went by Dolo
