Dora/Isadora

Hello, we really love the name [name_f]Dora[/name_f] because it goes great with our family’s names and I have a 3 times great grandma named this. However, we don’t like the [name_f]Dora[/name_f] the [name_u]Explorer[/name_u] association because we know that she would get teased. We have considered [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] as a full name, but we do not like the nickname [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] and would like for her to be called [name_f]Dora[/name_f] if she goes by her nickname. What do we do? Should we name her [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] and nickname her [name_f]Dora[/name_f] or just name her [name_f]Dora[/name_f]? How do we avoid her being called [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]? Thanks in advance!

I really like [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] over just [name_f]Dora[/name_f]. I actually think it’s more intuitive for people to go with nickname [name_f]Dora[/name_f] with a name like [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], rather than [name_u]Izzy[/name_u].
Are there any other [name_f]Dora[/name_f] type names you’ve considered?

[name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]
[name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]?

I think the [name_f]Dora[/name_f] the [name_u]Explorer[/name_u] connection is inevitable with either one, so you might as well pick [name_f]Dora[/name_f] if you’re trying to avoid [name_u]Izzy[/name_u]!

I agree! [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] is beautiful! Some other [name_f]Dora[/name_f] names:

[name_f]Callidora[/name_f]
[name_f]Cleodora[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Pandora[/name_f]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]

I’d go with just [name_f]Dora[/name_f] if that’s what you want to call her. Honestly, if she tells people she goes by [name_f]Dora[/name_f] even if her fn is [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], she might still get the [name_f]Dora[/name_f] [name_u]Explorer[/name_u] comments. [name_f]Dora[/name_f] is a wonderful, vintage name and I really like it

[name_f]Isadora[/name_f] over just [name_f]Dora[/name_f] definitely! I can imagine she will get teased a lot over the [name_f]Dora[/name_f] the [name_u]Explorer[/name_u] association, I wouldn’t even use it as a nickname tbh.

If you’re looking for other names besides [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] consider [name_f]Callidora[/name_f]. It’s super rare and elegant

I prefer just Dora–sweet, strong, and full of energy and charm! To me [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] feels more elegant and buttoned-up and a little serious, which isn’t necessarily my personal preference, but obviously that’s just a matter of what you prefer! Both are great names. [name_f]My[/name_f] own favorite long form for [name_f]Dora[/name_f] is [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f], so I’ll second that suggestion too.

I sort of think the [name_f]Dora[/name_f] the [name_u]Explorer[/name_u] association is inevitable whether it’s her full name or just a nickname, so I would lean toward just choosing whichever option you like more without regard to trying to avoid that connection. I don’t think it’s a particularly bad one anyway!

If you do end up going with [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], I think you could do your best to avoid [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] by only using [name_f]Dora[/name_f] and any other nicknames you prefer (I’m partial to Isa!). But obviously there’s always the possibility that she would choose to go by [name_u]Izzy[/name_u].

Overall, my vote goes to [name_f]Dora[/name_f] here, both because of my personal preference and because it sounds like just-Dora really has your heart. But either of your options are lovely, and I also love the previous suggestion of [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]!

I dislike [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] too!

I would name her [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] and call her that and [name_f]Dora[/name_f] and hope for the best.

But you could name her [name_f]Dora[/name_f] and call her [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] as a nn. Nn’s can be longer versions too.

And of course the real risk is that she’d like Izzy… you just never know.

I think that if you live Dora on its own than you should go for it because you will use Dora as her nn anyways so the association would be there if you use one name or the other
I do love Isadora and Theodora or Dorothea could be some other options but if you love Dora then nothing should be stoping you because as she gets older the association will stop and I don’t even think it is that big nowadays

I really love [name_f]Dora[/name_f]!

I recently started working in a daycare, so I have been witnessing first hand some of the modern name trends. Most of the kids (and I mean 90%) have very unique names. [name_f]Dora[/name_f] would fit right in (I promise!). Also, as someone who just finished high school and is a teenager, I have NEVER heard someone get teased for their name, and I have heard a lot of unique names.

As for [name_f]Dora[/name_f] the [name_u]Explorer[/name_u], it’s simply not the trendy show for modern children. I think you would find that very few people would make the association, and certainly not the children of the age she would grow up with.

If you call [name_f]Dora[/name_f] [name_f]Dora[/name_f], she won’t get called [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], expect for maybe by the occasional teacher on the first day of school. However, because [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] is substantially less popular than [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], most people probably wouldn’t even think to call her [name_u]Izzy[/name_u], because they wouldn’t have heard the name. For example, you might accidentally call an [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] “Liz,” but you probably wouldn’t accidentally call an [name_f]Liesel[/name_f] “Liz.”

Finally, I really love the name [name_f]Isadora[/name_f]. I think it’s stunning and the perfect full name for [name_f]Dora[/name_f]. However, it doesn’t sound like you are as in love with it as you are with [name_f]Dora[/name_f]. [name_f]Dora[/name_f] has been a stand-alone name for years, and doesn’t need a longer name unless you want one.

[name_f]My[/name_f] great-grandmother went by [name_f]Dora[/name_f] - her full name was [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_f]Anna[/name_f] Louise!! (Her parents used all the girl names they had chosen when expecting her four older brothers.)

I think that [name_f]Dora[/name_f] the [name_u]Explorer[/name_u] association is inevitable if she’s going to go by the name [name_f]Dora[/name_f] rather than a longer name. So it’s really just a matter of your own personal preference.

I love [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], but I don’t really like [name_f]Dora[/name_f] for obvious reasons. If anything I’d prefer the name [name_u]Izzy[/name_u] or even [name_f]Isis[/name_f] if you’re willing. I’d just call her [name_f]Isadora[/name_f].
