I donât think [name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_m]Alan[/name_m] are too close in practice. The short O sound and the short A sound are different enough to distinguish the two. And those are the prominent sounds, not the -lin ending sounds.
[name_u]John[/name_u] feels like it doesnât fit with [name_m]Colin[/name_m] and [name_u]Connor[/name_u]. [name_u]John[/name_u] feels very outdated to me. The only Johnâs I know are in their 50s or older. So to me, [name_u]John[/name_u] doesnât feel like a baby name.
Looking at [name_m]Alan[/name_m] [name_u]Reid[/name_u], I feel like [name_u]Connor[/name_u] fits nicely with it! When I saw [name_m]Alan[/name_m] and [name_m]Colin[/name_m] out loud together I feel they could get tricky when calling both quickly. they have a very similar ending sound so it might be confusing at times who youâre calling.
[name_f]Beautiful[/name_f] options !!
Here is how my brain works !
[name_u]John[/name_u] feels stylistically similar to [name_m]Alan[/name_m] ( old man vibe) , and has 4 letters ! Itâs currently ranked #
26 for popularity in the US .
[name_u]Connor[/name_u] has a different ending . But feels more current - even though itâs ranked 118 in popularity charts.
[name_m]Colin[/name_m] is my personal favourite - probably due to association . I wanted to use this name to honour my mom [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] . Popularity wise itâs ranked 293
If I was strictly picking based on a brother to [name_m]Alan[/name_m] I would probably pick [name_u]John[/name_u]
[name_u]John[/name_u]. I think it goes best with [name_m]Alan[/name_m], although [name_u]Conner[/name_u] is good too. However, [name_u]John[/name_u] is now an underused classic. [name_u]Connor[/name_u] is well-used, and [name_m]Colin[/name_m] seems rather dated at the moment, though it might not stay that way.
[name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Connor[/name_u] would work, as would [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_m]Colin[/name_m], if you would like to do that.
I find Alan and Colin too close and maybe a little too fusty together (cooler on own). I also think Colin Hoffman made me think of colonoscopy or something related - silly but brain went there.
To me, something about Connor drags a little into Hoffman, whereas John Hoffman flows well and just sounds so debonair and smart. Also, Johnny Hoffman is super cool! Having said that Connor is a great name so if itâs your heartâs desire, go for it.
So, for me, John first, then Connor, then Colin.
Alan Reid &
John Wesley/Westley (swoon!!)
John Liam
John Curtis
John Reuben
John Graham (though Iâm saying with syllables, Grayâum)
John Rainer
John Hyland
John William
John Philip
John Barnaby
John Rupert
John Brendan
John Malcolm
John Owen
John Connor would be good but might get Terminator comments!
Of your choices, [name_m]Alan[/name_m] and [name_u]Connor[/name_u] are my favorite pair. As a mom to many boys, when they tend to share sounds (Alan and [name_u]John[/name_u] and [name_m]Colin[/name_m] all sharing that ending ânâ sound), it makes it even more confusing than usual when youâre calling for one of them!
Iâd pair with a one-syllable name you love that has meaning for youâŚ
I love [name_u]Connor[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]
I think [name_u]John[/name_u] is the best fit with big brother, [name_m]Alan[/name_m].
They are both classic names, each four letters.
For a middle I like just about any two syllable name (youâve been given so many great suggestions.). I say, two syllable, because [name_m]Alan[/name_m] [name_u]Reid[/name_u] is a total of three syllables (2+1=3) and I find it usually sounds pleasant and balanced if the siblingâs name has the same number of syllables. So, [name_u]John[/name_u] (1) plus a two syllable middle (2) should sound nice.
