Due any time now...

…and need your help!

We’re almost sure that this little one will be named [name_m]Hector[/name_m] if it’s a boy. We live in the U.K. - it seems to be quite rare over here and we’ve had some really negative reactions from loved ones - despite it being a family name (my great grandfather). It’s freaked me out a bit. Does it come across as too harsh sounding? What do you think of when you hear it?

We’re ideally looking for a Celtic feeling name (other names we like are [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] and [name_u]Owen[/name_u]) as our families are Irish and Scottish (hence [name_m]Hector[/name_m], despite it being a Greek name!) and we’re also completely stuck for a middle name… if you have any suggestions that would sound good with a one syllable surname please, please let me know. I’ve been having fake contractions all day and am starting to freak out that this baby will be born and we still won’t have a clue!

I love [name_m]Hector[/name_m]! It’s handsome and strong sounding. A couple middle name ideas…

[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]George[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_u]Grey[/name_u]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]

Good luck, and go with the name you love!

[name_u]Arlen[/name_u]
[name_u]Carlin[/name_u]
[name_u]Lennon[/name_u]
[name_u]Roan[/name_u]
[name_u]Rohan[/name_u]
[name_m]Alec[/name_m]
Allister
[name_m]Callum[/name_m]

[name_m]Hector[/name_m] sounds a bit harsh, but it starts with a heck sound, so I think makes sense. Nothing wrong with [name_m]Hector[/name_m] if you like it.
I love the name [name_u]Owen[/name_u]. [name_u]Owen[/name_u] [name_m]Hector[/name_m] flows nicely as well.
[name_u]Kieran[/name_u] [name_m]Hector[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Zachary[/name_m]
[name_m]Donovan[/name_m] [name_m]Hector[/name_m]

[name_m]Bryant[/name_m] [name_m]Hector[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Bryant[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u] [name_u]Flynn[/name_u]
[name_m]Eamon[/name_m] [name_m]Hector[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Eamon[/name_m]

I like hector, I would use it as a middle if I had a family connection with it, not a first but that’s just personal preference, not dislike. I have said this a million times… dont discuss baby names with anyone but the babies other parent or a trusted confidant or strangers… family will never be happy unless its what they would name their child… girls names they tend to like more, family will say awww you’re naming her rose, how pretty, I had an aunt rose… say I’m naming him [name_u]Roy[/name_u] they’ll say ugh I had a cousin [name_u]Roy[/name_u], why don’t you call him [name_m]Bill[/name_m], I always wanted to call a boy [name_m]Bill[/name_m]… people are crazy… now if you ask they’ll have suggestions or advice and if they see a hint of reservation they’ll try and help and yes unless its super specifically a style or name they appreciate they may not a approve… if you want to call him [name_m]Hector[/name_m] then by all means do, its not strange and he’s named for someone… now my grandmother told me once that she doesn’t love ‘old man’ names on little boys… reasoning being that she grew up with all these [name_m]Henry[/name_m]'s and [name_m]Georges[/name_m] and now theres been all this time where there wasn’t any, and now they’re back, likely the grand children of all the old men she grew up with… it makes her think of old men, its a personal connection and she’s entitled to that and you should be aware of it. People do connect with names very powerfully. One of the reasons we will never give someone in our families name to one of our children in the first spot, we dont want people to have any other associations, other than that [name_m]Hector[/name_m] is lovely and underused. Really think it over and toss around options I say, much like you are doing with this post! I like other ‘old man’ names with [name_m]Hector[/name_m], [name_m]George[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]… just some that spring to mind. Congrats and good luck finding your Childs name, its impossible to please everyone but hopefully you can please your child and that’s what matters.

[name_m]Hector[/name_m] is really cool! The babies I’ve met recently have been [name_f]Alma[/name_f] and [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], I think [name_m]Hector[/name_m] fits in wonderfully!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Hector[/name_m]!! So handsome.

I love [name_m]Hector[/name_m]! Great choice.

I might choose to highlight the harsher sounds with a middle name; embrace them rather than shy away.

I like:
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Cormac[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Angus[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_u]Kieran[/name_u]

I’m in UK too, and I love [name_m]Hector[/name_m]. You should go for it, if it’s your favourite name.

What about …
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Andrew[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Brock[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Christian[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Edward[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]

Loving [name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Christian[/name_m] and [name_m]Hector[/name_m] [name_m]Angus[/name_m] too… thanks for all the suggestions so far…

I think what I’m finding hardest is that my mum really dislikes it, & we’re really close, but my husband and I can’t think of a name that we prefer really and we’re now 3 days late! X

Did great grandpa [name_m]Hector[/name_m] dislike his own name? Or maybe your mother did not have the greatest relationship with him? Her dislike might be more personal than she’s letting on. If so, you might want to listen. If not, then choose the name you love. I’m not in the UK and have never met anyone named [name_m]Hector[/name_m], much less a baby, but your reasons to choose it make a lot of sense.

Nope, mum never knew my great grandad as he was unfortunately long gone before she met my dad. By all accounts he was a real adventurer!

I think her dislike of the name is based on its sound, lack of nickname and that in her book it is super 'old man’y, so am just wondering if that’s quite a lot of people’s take on it, or whether it’s a generational thing…
