Due in 4 days, still no name pinned down.

I want to avoid my kid having the same name as another in his class but i like popular names like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Jude[/name_u].

Others we’re considering:

[name_m]Jonas[/name_m]
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u]
[name_u]Elias[/name_u]
And possibly Vaugn or [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] in the middle, both are family names.

Help! Suggestions? Does the s at the end of the first name clash with Sch (sh pronunciation) at the beginning of the last name?

Thank you in advance!

It’s better to use a name you genuinely love because of concerns about popularity in my opinion! There’s a reason names are popular - because they’re great, and everyone knows it  I don’t think [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Jude[/name_u] are popular enough that it’d be common enough for him to have either in his class with him ([name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is only number sixty-something and [name_u]Jude[/name_u] hasn’t even cracked the top hundred and fifty.) If anything by giving him a distinctive name that doesn’t share sounds with many others, you set him apart more. [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_u]Jude[/name_u] are both lovely names, so please don’t be discouraged by their rankings!

[name_m]Jonas[/name_m] is a cool name, but I wonder if the [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] Brothers is too strong of an association?

[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] just screams Game of Thrones to me, not what I’d want my child associated with. Spelling and pronunciation might be difficult for some people. I could see it as a cool middle, though.

[name_u]Elias[/name_u] is a cool name!

I think [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] fits best as a middle with most of your names, but [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] would be cool too!

I think it does clash to be honest.

Thank you! I appreciate your input!!

The -s ending would run into the Sch of your last name a bit. Not the worst thing in the world if you really love that name above and beyond everything else but otherwise I’d lean toward one of your other options. And of course there’s always [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] too, and [name_m]Joel[/name_m] may be appealing as well.

A good friend of mine has a surname ending in Sch and he avoided -s endings for that reason. His boys are [name_m]Ivan[/name_m], [name_m]Luke[/name_m], and [name_m]Warren[/name_m].

From your short list I’m really partial to [name_u]Oberon[/name_u]! I think [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m], not GoT (the character in that series is named Oberyn, while similar, they do not sound the same.)
I don’t think either of your middle name options work especially well with this one though. So if you are hardlined about the middles that probably rules this one out.

[name_m]Jonas[/name_m]/[name_m]Jonah[/name_m]/[name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] works very well and seems like a strong pick.

I’m sure it’s different depending on where you live but I actually know a number of young boy’s named [name_u]Elias[/name_u], as well as quite a few boys named [name_m]Eli[/name_m], so I actually think [name_u]Elias[/name_u] is the one with the most risk of being shared with a classmate. But again this could be different where you live. You can probably check local names stats to check it’s popularity. (If you are in the US you should be able to look up the top 100 names in your state!)

I love [name_u]Elias[/name_u]. [name_u]Elias[/name_u] [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] sounds great and I think it would work with your surname - it might run into it a bit but I don’t think it’s the worst sound

I’ll throw in the suggestions of [name_m]Josiah[/name_m], [name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m], [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] and [name_m]Orson[/name_m] as they remind me of the names you like

Thank you! I love [name_m]Josiah[/name_m] but hubby doesn’t. I hadn’t thought of [name_m]Orson[/name_m], I’ll ask him!

Thankyou! I think it clashes a bit too. Enough that I have to think about it.

I love [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] and am not stuck on those two for middle. Here’s the list as it looks today:

Middle names:
[name_m]Raphael[/name_m]
Vaugn
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]
[name_m]Apollo[/name_m]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u]
[name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]
[name_m]Caius[/name_m]

Any others that you love that you think fit?

Where I live [name_u]Elias[/name_u] is more popular than [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (semi popular) or [name_u]Jude[/name_u] (I wouldn’t call it popular). And [name_m]Eli[/name_m] and [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] are also popular so they all blend together. [name_u]Elias[/name_u] is the only one I’d avoid if popularity is important to you.
I think s ending names do clash with your surname. I avoided all names ending in the k sound for that reason. But it’s kind of a weird peeve of mine… It’s certainly not terrible if it’s the name you love.
I like [name_u]Jude[/name_u] [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] best!
Good luck!!

Honestly, I don’t think it clashes. As for names, have you thought about [name_u]Elliot[/name_u]? I don’t know how popular it is, but [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] might sound nice. I think [name_m]Nathanial[/name_m] has the same theme (if you know what I mean?) as [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], and [name_m]Nate[/name_m] could be a good nickname. And, it’s switched up, but if you like [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] as a first name, I think [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] [name_u]Jude[/name_u] sounds good. [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] also has a similar sound to [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] and [name_u]Elias[/name_u], but I don’t know if you like that one.

Oh so many great potential middles and I think a lot of them totally work with [name_u]Oberon[/name_u].

[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] [name_m]Caius[/name_m]
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] [name_m]Raphael[/name_m]
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]
Heck even [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] [name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]!

Let us know what you end up deciding about [name_m]Jonas[/name_m]. If it’s your favorite I think it’s worth using but totally respect the need to think on it. We all have to figure out for ourselves what our dealbreakers are.

I didn’t realize [name_u]Elias[/name_u] was so popular! I am hearing that [name_m]Eli[/name_m] names are gaining popularity though so I think I’m just going to take it off the list or stick it in with middle name possibilities.

I feel like the s clashes too. My cousin (who suggested [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] in the first place) doesn’t think so and I wanted to know what other name lovers thought. Thank you for your input.

My friend gave birth to an [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] in [name_u]January[/name_u] and I like.[name_m]Elijah[/name_m] but not as much as [name_u]Elias[/name_u]. I guess I didnt realize but “[name_m]Eli[/name_m]” names are getting pretty popular these days so I think I’ll just make it an easier decision and scrap it altogether or.consider it for the middle.

[name_m]Ezra[/name_m] is my dad’s name and apparently also gaining popularity so I’d probably only use it in the middle.

Thank you for your input. I just didn’t know if it’s too clunky/tongue twister to go from -as to sch- like “bus shift” or “fuss shephard”. Like, it doesn’t seem to roll of the tongue easily, ya know?

Thank you! I actually am leaning more towards [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] because I think it flows with Scheffing better. But I am a little hesitant because [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] is kind of “out there” whereas [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] seems to be a more readily accepted or “normal” name-not that I’m stuck on it being normal.

I actually really like [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] [name_m]Raphael[/name_m] because it is a nod to his dad (first name [name_m]Ralph[/name_m] after his grandpa [name_m]Raphael[/name_m]).

What do you think about [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] [name_m]Jonas[/name_m]? I’m even open to two middle names to break up the -s sch-

I actually think that [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] goes so nicely together.

I love the name [name_u]Elias[/name_u] too out of your list.

Thank you! You don’t think [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] Scheffing (pronounced soft sh) is too much of a mouthful?

I also have a Sh starting surname, and I have avoided all S ending first names, because I think it clashes. Which is unfortunate, because I love so many S ending names. [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] is not really my style, but if you love it, i’d go for it. As for popularity, my son has 2 girls with the same, uncommon name in his class. But his name is [name_m]Jack[/name_m] (named for his great grandfather) and there is no-one in his entire year group, or the two years above called [name_m]Jack[/name_m] (there is a [name_m]Jax[/name_m]). So I just don’t think you can ever really tell how it’s going to go.

Use the name you really love.

Oh I love the [name_m]Raphael[/name_m] is an honor name! And I think [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] is very handsome. I don’t think the running together is as big of a deal between and missle and last name as it is between a first and last, but I also totally support two middle names if that feels like something you want to do. A lot of people opt for two.

I’m probably the wrong person to determine whether [name_u]Oberon[/name_u] is too out there or not because most people would definitely consider my son’s name to be way out there and I really didn’t think so until I got a few comments during my pregnancy.
If it gives you reassurance though, we’ve had nothing but compliments since he was born. I think people are a lot less averse to names outside of the norm than they used to be.

[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] S (last name) flows very nicely if you would like to consider that? I really like [name_u]Elias[/name_u] with the nickname [name_m]Eli[/name_m], which works really well if he would be mainly going by [name_m]Eli[/name_m] but I agree that the two S’s run into each other. Best wishes and let us know what you end up choosing!

I would definitely avoid names ending in -s. My first name ran into my last name, and I actually hated saying my full name out loud! Too bad nameberry was before my mother’s time!

I love [name_u]Jude[/name_u] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. Think [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] would also work well as an alternative to [name_m]Jonas[/name_m].

What about [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] instead of [name_u]Elias[/name_u]?

Best of luck!

Sorry… missed the part where your friend has an [name_u]Elliott[/name_u]. [name_m]Cross[/name_m] that part off my post!
