I only have a week left before my due date and we still haven’t managed to agree on a name!
I thought I was set on [name_f]Rose[/name_f] but a (not very close) friend has recently used this for her little girl which has now made me question it. As with a lot of people I am looking for that elusive mix of not too popular and not too ‘out there’ in a name.
We have a short list but the closer I get to the due date the more issues I keep finding with each name… Any opinions on how to make the final decision welcome!
The list is:
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] - getting very popular in UK, maybe too popular?
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] - concerned it might get popular and that a friend has recently used it.
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] - I love it but partner says it reminds him of eyes rather than flowers!
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] - worried it doesn’t go with last name which is Lidall, lots of ‘Ls’ and ‘Ds’! I would probably use it with nickname [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
[name_f]Estella[/name_f]- keep changing my mind on this one, maybe it’s too elaborate?
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] nn [name_f]Rose[/name_f]? It has less of the repetitive D sound that makes [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] flow bad with your surname.
Thank you so much for including the surname - it can make such a big difference in figuring out what sounds best. (I’m pronouncing it ‘lih-DAHL’ in my head - I hope that’s right.)
I have no concept of which names are popular in the UK, so no help there.
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] Lidall is far and away my favourite on your list! Any chance it’ll grow on your partner? It’s an underused, gorgeous floral and it sounds great with your surname.
I’d take [name_f]Estella[/name_f] off the list because you’re not crazy about it and the “L” sound is really close to the last name. If it was [name_f]Leah[/name_f] Lidall I’d be on board, but [name_f]Estella[/name_f] Lidall creates a bit of a tongue-twister.
I’m sort of inclined to agree that [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] Lidall has lots of "L"s and "D"s, but in this case I don’t think it’s necessarily a deal-breaker - the sounds do repeat, but I don’t find them hard to say together.
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Rose[/name_f] are not my style (just personal preference), but objectively they’re both very nice names and neither clashes with the surname. It’s a tough call if your friend has just used [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. Are your daughter and her daughter likely to spend a lot of time together? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have a compelling reason beyond just liking the name (such as a family connection) that you could use to explain the choice of [name_f]Rose[/name_f] to her? Would she take it as a slight or a compliment if you used [name_f]Rose[/name_f] too? Only you can figure out if you’re comfortable using a name a friend used already.
Thanks for all of the suggestions! I’m trying to convince partner about [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] or [name_f]Iris[/name_f]!
I will see how my friend feels about me using baby name [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. We live apart and don’t see each other often so hopefully she won’t mind… I think I have kind of begun to think of baby as [name_f]Rose[/name_f] so it’s difficult to give up!
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] is a fabulous name.my favorite name for a sister is [name_f]Rosannah[/name_f] and you could [name_f]Rose[/name_f] or [name_f]Anna[/name_f].It doesn’t that your friend had a [name_f]Rose[/name_f] this is your daughter.
I agree that [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]/[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] seem like your best bets. And I actually think [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] Lidall isn’t too bad, especially if she’d go by [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
I like [name_f]Rose[/name_f] as well. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t give up a name you love! That said, I like [name_f]Florence[/name_f] as well even though it is gaining popularity.
A big road block with names can be over thinking it. The more names you think of the more overwhelmed or confused you might get. (Kind of like the wedding dress debacle. When you try on 30+ dresses they all start to blur together and none of them stand out as extraordinary) [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about popularity in other countries or even our country. [name_f]My[/name_f] suggestion:
Go with [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] (with option to call her [name_f]Rose[/name_f]) [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] Lidall is fine! It actually goes well together.
Second choice: If [name_f]Estella[/name_f] is too elaborate…try [name_f]Stella[/name_f]. [name_f]Stella[/name_f] Lidall sounds wonderful!
If you like [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f], how about [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] or [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]? [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is gorgeous though, and I think of the flower, not the eyes.
For [name_f]Rose[/name_f], I feel like it’s super common as a middle name but not very common as a first name. You could always give her a longer formal name, and call her by the nickname [name_f]Rose[/name_f], that way her name will feel distinct from your friend’s baby’s name.
There are lots of gorgeous options to get to [name_f]Rose[/name_f]: [name_f]Rosemarie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalyn[/name_f], [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]
That’s a tough one! [name_m]How[/name_m] close are you and your friend who used [name_f]Rose[/name_f]? If you’re just acquainances, I’d say let her know you had already chosen [name_f]Rose[/name_f] for your daughter. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t ask. It’s the truth, you’re not ‘stealing’ her name. But if you are close friends, yet far apart location-wise, I’d say decide how connected you are to [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. If you already call your baby [name_f]Rose[/name_f], then discuss with your friend, but figure out how you’ll react if she says she doesn’t want you to use [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. I personally wouldn’t use a name even close to any of my best buddies, but it’s hard if they’re snatched up your top name months before you’re due. Good luck!
I think a name with multiple nns is a good bet - [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosanna[/name_f]…
[name_f]Florence[/name_f] - I don’t know about the British popularity issue, but it’s a nice name; I’m not crazy about it. You could use [name_f]Flora[/name_f] as a nickname, which I love, personally, and it’s always nice to have a nickname.
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] - I love, love, love [name_f]Rose[/name_f], and I think it’s still unique as a first name, thought it’s overdone as a middle.
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] - I’m leaning towards this name for you because you say you [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it! Could you buy your partner some beautiful Irises and remind him it means rainbow?
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] - I wouldn’t use this with your last name, personally, but I do like the suggestion of [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] instead. However, I prefer [name_f]Rose[/name_f] to any of the longer alternatives.
[name_f]Estella[/name_f]- too elaborate? I don’t know. I think it’s lovely. Perhaps [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] would feel better for you?
[name_m]How[/name_m] to choose…
you could wait to meet the baby and see what feels right then;
you and your partner could each write your top three, then swap (hopefully you would have at least one match!);
you could talk to a trusted friend/family member and perhaps even let them choose between your favorites;
finally, you could pull a name out of a hat! With the hat idea… you could try to test how you really feel about the names by pulling them out of a hat, pretending you’ll be committed to whatever you get, and seeing how your react (this may show you your true gut feeling on the name). For example, are you thrilled you got [name_f]Rose[/name_f]? Sad you got [name_f]Rose[/name_f] because you were secretly hoping for [name_f]Iris[/name_f]?
Good luck! You have a great list, and your baby will be lucky to have any of those lovely names.
In the end, your daughter is much more important in your life than a not-close friend, so I’d say go for [name_f]Rose[/name_f] anyway-- especially if your baby already feels like a [name_f]Rose[/name_f] to you.
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] is lovely, I wouldn’t let someone else using it sway me if it were my top choice.
I actually really like [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] with your last name! I think it sounds awesome! Memorable and the repetitive sounds make it stronger and kinda fun to say. [name_f]My[/name_f] vote is for [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]!
I don’t think that [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] Lidall sounds that great, just because of the sounds. But all the rest are really nice.
I adore [name_f]Florence[/name_f], it’s so lovely. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is very traditional but not very common, and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] is so simple and elegant. [name_f]Estella[/name_f] is pretty, but a you said, it is a bit elaborate. Maybe [name_f]Estelle[/name_f], or [name_f]Stella[/name_f]?
[name_f]My[/name_f] favorite is [name_f]Florence[/name_f]
I love [name_f]Iris[/name_f] from your list it’s a lovely name and it’s a name I have loved right from a young age! I would go with [name_f]Iris[/name_f]!!! Maybe [name_f]Rose[/name_f] as a middle name though. [name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]?
