[name]Ive[/name] posted heaps since finding out we are having our second daughter but we’ve struggled to settle on her name for some reason. [name]Baby[/name] is due [name]Monday[/name] and [name]Indigo[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] is in the top spot…
Im slightly concerned that I will hear her called [name]Indy[/name] and I don’t like nicknames but feel this might be unavoidable. I just love the name but I can’t help thinking it’s just not the one
I love O names and have [name]Odette[/name] spinning around in my head. [name]Don[/name]'t mind [name]Odessa[/name] but I bet she would get Dess and im not to sure about that.
Thoughts? Is it as nice as [name]Indigo[/name]? What do you think when you hear the name [name]Odette[/name], is it too international? We live in Australia
I also worried about the popularity of [name]Indigo[/name], we know a few here already
I don’t think [name]Odette[/name] is too international, but if you don’t like nicknames, then I think the two names you have aren’t going to work. Sorry to say that with only a couple of days away from your due date!!
[name]Lena[/name] is really a lovely name and it’s short where you wouldn’t have a problem with a nickname. It’s also not common - at least in the US, not sure about where you live though.
I like [name]Odette[/name] a lot better than [name]Indigo[/name]-- to me, [name]Indigo[/name] is very masculine sounding (even though the only [name]Indigo[/name] I know is a girl…). [name]Odette[/name] is lovely, and reminds me of Swan [name]Lake[/name]. I love the three combos, but [name]Odette[/name] [name]Lavinia[/name] is gorgeous!
My other daughter is [name]Heidi[/name] [name]Scarlet[/name] - but im not too concerned about matching their names, would rather just find a combo for this bub that I truly love
I wondered about [name]Indigo[/name] being a unisex name but I only know girl Indigos too
Was also wondering about the pronunciation of [name]Odette[/name] and whether it could be misread
I guess it depends on what you’re looking for. [name]Odette[/name] is more elegant and feminine, but I find [name]Indigo[/name] spunkier and more fun.
I wouldn’t worry about nicknames; my (real) name is three syllables as well, and it shortens to an incredibly annoying nickname. Yes, people try to call me by it, but they’ll stop if I correct them. Who knows, maybe your daughter will like the nickname [name]Indy[/name]…
O names:
[name]Cleo[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name]-- [name]Lia[/name]?
[name]Oona[/name]
[name]Olympia[/name]-- [name]Pia[/name]?
[name]Ocean[/name]
Oc”ane
[name]Oceana[/name]
[name]Octavia[/name]-- [name]Tavy[/name] or [name]Via[/name]?
[name]Olwen[/name]-- [name]Winnie[/name]?
[name]Orchid[/name]
[name]Oriana[/name]-- [name]Ria[/name] or [name]Ana[/name]?
[name]Ottilie[/name]-- [name]Tillie[/name]?
[name]Ottilia[/name]-- [name]Tillie[/name] or [name]Lia[/name]?
[name]Ottoline[/name]-- [name]Lina[/name]?
I like [name]Odette[/name] a LOT better than [name]Indigo[/name]…but one of my favorite O names ever, which is sort of similar to [name]Odette[/name] is [name]Odessa[/name]. More melodic and stylish. [name]Just[/name] a thought.
I have to say that i really love [name]Indigo[/name], it is very cute and spunky! I have known 2 [name]Odette[/name]'s in my life and unfortunately, she always had a nickname, one was called [name]Ody[/name] and one was called [name]Ettie[/name]. I must say that if you truly love [name]Indigo[/name], then go for it. Quite honestly ANY name you choose will at some point get shortened into SOMETHING. I think it would be better to have a cute nickname hidden in a name, like [name]Indy[/name], then to let some other children butcher the name you chose for your child into some ridiculous nickname because there is no obvious nickname in the name. [name]Case[/name] and point, when my mom was pregnant with my brother, she wanted to name him [name]Andrew[/name], she loved the name. However she hated the nickname [name]Andy[/name], and knew it would get shortened to that, so she picked [name]Connor[/name]. Seemingly nickname proof name right? Up until he was about 10 or 11 people call him [name]Con[/name] (Yes like a Convict) , [name]Con[/name] [name]Con[/name], and worse of all [name]Connie[/name] (This is the one that drives my Mom crazy, and mostly the girls when he was younger called him [name]Connie[/name], as some term of endearment). Now he corrects people though, its just [name]Connor[/name], not [name]Con[/name] or [name]Con[/name] [name]Con[/name] or [name]Connie[/name].
I think that [name]Indigo[/name] [name]Catherine[/name] is beautiful and cute and spunky and i think that your daughter would grow up and love her name. But she may also want a nickname, or she may like her name just the way it is and tell people not to nickname her.
I dont think your naming decision should be based off a nickname possibility because there will always be one, whether it makes sense or not.
I hope you stick with [name]Indigo[/name] [name]Catherine[/name]!
and Congratulations on the little one, hope i helped:)
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Odette[/name]… I’d pick it myself but my husband has stated that he hates all names that end in “ette”. Random, but okay… Anyways, I love it. It seems much more feminine than [name]Indigo[/name] (which seems more tom-boyish). People could nickname her Dette or just pronounce the extra syllable and call her by her full name. I don’t think it sounds too international. Maybe a bit French. But that’s okay in my book! Congratulations and good luck with the naming. She’ll be beautiful whatever you name her!
I’m not a huge fan of [name]Odette[/name]. It reminds me of the word audit and it sounds a little akward imo. [name]Indigo[/name] is cute and spunky and I really dont think [name]Indy[/name] is a terrible nn. What happens if someone tries to call [name]Odette[/name] “[name]Odie[/name]”? Personally I think that is worse. My favorite O name is [name]Margo[/name]. There is also [name]Marlo/name…
I like [name]Odette[/name] much more than [name]Indigo[/name] (I’m sorry to throw this out there so close to your due date!) [name]Odette[/name] also seems to flow much better with [name]Heidi[/name] than [name]Indigo[/name] does and you can be sure [name]Odette[/name] would be the only one in her class! I think [name]Odette[/name] should have a more mainstream middle name to balance out its uniqueness so for me, [name]Odette[/name] [name]Lavinia[/name] is out (though I do love [name]Lavinia[/name]!) [name]Odette[/name] [name]Alexandra[/name] is my personal favorite, just because I hear [name]Catherine[/name] so much these days.
As for [name]Indigo[/name], I’m sorry to say that I think the nn [name]Indy[/name] would be rather hard to avoid, especially in school, where you don’t really have control over what other children call her. I’m not a big fan of [name]Odessa[/name] (I associate it with the place) but I think the similar Contessa nn [name]Tess[/name]/[name]Tessa[/name] is quite pretty. Another ‘O’ name I love is [name]Ophelia[/name]!
[name]Indigo[/name] and [name]Odette[/name] are pretty names. I would use both names BUT [name]Indigo[/name] for a boy. I also know an [name]Indigo[/name] thats a girl but the name just seems masculine to me. If I met another little girl named [name]Indigo[/name] I would thinks its cute but if I had to choose for my own daughter it would be [name]Odette[/name] for sure!
Funny, this seems to be a choice that’s attracting strong opinions, though I don’t think there’s a clear winner! I actually prefer [name]Indigo[/name]; I think of odor when I hear [name]Odette[/name]. But I love [name]Octavia[/name] and [name]Olympia[/name]…
[name]Indigo[/name] is getting very popular in Australia for little kids or babies! I think in a few years it’ll be even more popular, so if you want something common it’d be perfect. [name]Odette[/name]'s gorgeous and far more unusual so if you’re after unusual go with that.
Wow, so much great advice. Each time I read a post I switch opinions about which name I prefer.
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou for all the advice. I agree with 90% of it.
[name]Odette[/name] DOES run the risk of getting shortened to an nn, but I think it is less likely to get an nn than [name]Indigo[/name]… [name]Indy[/name] is just very very obvious, and it’s a 3 syllable name
And thanks to the poster who mentioned that [name]Indigo[/name] is getting common in Australia - I would love to avoid choosing a name that will explode soon. As [name]Heidi[/name] did after we chose it
…and I love that [name]Odette[/name] is practically unheard of in my part of the woods which is a plus.
I also think it clicks with [name]Heidi[/name] slightly better than [name]Indigo[/name]
[name]Indigo[/name] to me will always be a feminine name, very few colour names seem masculine to me. [name]Indigo[/name] is also a girls clothes brand out here so that might be why?!
I love ‘I’ names and ‘O’ names equally and I think that is why [name]Indigo[/name] appeals so much.
I am due tomorrow and last night spent half the night awake swinging between these 2 names. I hope that’s a sign of prelabor, baby name anxiety!!!
I’m a fellow Aussie - and I vote for [name]Odette[/name]!
I know two Indigos (both girls) that both get called [name]Indy[/name]. I think the Packers little [name]Indigo[/name] may cause a rise in popularity down here…
I only ever met one [name]Odette[/name], she was ion her 30’s - and was such a graceful, warm woman. She instantly made me love the name.
