Due TODAY...still undecided!

So after several long and short lists we still are not set on a name. My due date is today:o
I love all of the nameberry input so fire away!

Our current top 3:

Otso (my pick, love meaning and think fits well with bro [name]Uli[/name] [name]Miles[/name] and sis [name]Wren[/name] [name]Lyra[/name])
[name]Isadore[/name] (dh pick because he likes nn [name]Izzy[/name]…I’m not big on nn’s in general but like [name]Izzy[/name] and the meaning)
[name]Hawthorne[/name]

[name]Don[/name]'t get me wrong, we both like all 3 but have our preferences.

So I have said that I am ok with any combo of the three, but what do you think?

Would like to flow with sibs [name]Uli[/name] [name]Miles[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] [name]Lyra[/name] plus one syllable last name starting with D. Should we stick to the 1+2 or 2+1 syllable combos? We have plenty that we could pull from our multiple lists;) Or is a different combo ok as long as it flows?

Also we are kind of backwards to most people…we like an unusual first name with a “if you don’t end up liking your first name” middle that is still not overly popular.

Thanks in advance.

Osto [name]Nikolai[/name] D

Good luck with the birth.

[name]Emilia[/name]

Thanks [name]Emilia[/name]. Anyone else? BTW I’m thick skinned, so criticism ok too.

Umm sorry I can’t get away from the Oatso simple porridge reference, although it would match your sibling names.

I would have to choose Otso [name]Hawthorne[/name] - the name goes nicely with [name]Uli[/name] and [name]Wren[/name]. Good luck today!

I had to do some research on Otso as I’d never heard it before, and also wanted to get some perspective on your decision.

I like [name]Otto[/name] a lot better than Otso. As an alternative since you don’t seem sold on [name]Otto[/name], how about [name]Otis[/name]? Seems to meet a lot of your requirements, take [name]Otto[/name] one step forward, and avoid [name]Otto[/name] or Otso downsides of nn Odd-o or Odd-so.

My second choice is [name]Hawthorne[/name]. I see in the other threads that someone suggested [name]Hawk[/name] as a nickname which is very clever and that you worried about having a two-bird family – similarly clever. So how about [name]Huck[/name]? Or [name]Tuck[/name] (though we’re getting far afield). I do like [name]Thorne[/name] but it is a bit soap-opera-y.

I think there are too many girl Izzys out there to make [name]Isadore[/name] or [name]Isidore[/name] an option that lives up to the other two.

But overall love your original thinking and can’t wait to hear what you decide!!

I do like [name]Hawthorne[/name] but I think Otso fits in the most with your other children. I also like the 2-1 rhythm if there is a short mn you love. Something like Otso [name]Jude[/name]. Good luck! =]

I know a male [name]Isadore[/name] [name]Glad[/name] to see that one considered.

I love [name]Hawthorne[/name] and [name]Isadore[/name] the most and think [name]Hawthorne[/name] goes really well with your others.

[name]Hawthorne[/name] is my favorite of your choices. A cool nn could be Hawth sounds like “hoth” or [name]Thor[/name], really cool. Otso is just too out there. I agree with [name]Pam[/name]'s suggestions of [name]Otto[/name] or [name]Otis[/name].

I dunno why but I can’t get my head around Otso. I do agree that it fits well with [name]Uli[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] but Im not a fan. What about [name]Otto[/name] instead? I think it sounds more like a childs name and still goes great with [name]Uli[/name] [name]Miles[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] [name]Lyra[/name].

My favourite out of the 3 would be [name]Hawthorne[/name]. It just has such a cool vibe and I love it loads. [name]Otto[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] would make a great combo? or Otso [name]Hawthorne[/name] if you really don’t wanna lose Otso.

Good luck with everything! [name]Bree[/name]

Well I’ll go against the grain and say I really like Otso and think it goes well with [name]Uli[/name]. I’m Finnish heritage so maybe it’s more familiar to me from that, but I feel like NB has embraced [name]Eero[/name] so thoroughly and it’s as out there as Otso to me. I still like the sound.

I’m having a hard time getting the fatso out of Otso…If you’re in the US and he’s anything but reedy, you’ll need to be prepared for this possible nn. I like [name]Isidore[/name] in theory, but agree that [name]Izzy[/name] isn’t that usable for a boy at this point in time, too many girls with that name. I like [name]Hawthorn[/name] a lot, but not so much with [name]Uli[/name] and [name]Wren[/name]. I do like [name]Eero[/name], or [name]Arno[/name], or [name]Otto[/name].

Another vote for [name]Hawthorne[/name].

Thanks for all the insightful input and please keep it coming…the baby is not here yet so there is still time to ponder. I find myself with less anticipation and fretfulness about birth of baby #3, so having (or not having) a name to worry about gives me something to do;)

I think we may have put [name]Isadore[/name] aside, at least as a first name…tossing around [name]Otto[/name], Otso, [name]Otis[/name] and [name]Hawthorne[/name].

[name]Otto[/name] was my first choice for a long time and I finally gave it up out of fear of upswing in popularity. I really have come to like Otso equally as well but worry that people will constantly confuse it with [name]Otto[/name]. Not to mention maybe I am just trying too hard to replace [name]Otto[/name]? [name]Otis[/name] has also been a consideration before…it has a bonus of a vague musical connection ([name]Otis[/name] [name]Redding[/name]) as do the middle names of both of the other kids. But for some reason I always think [name]Milo[/name] and [name]Otis[/name], not necessarily a negative association but makes it harder for me to take seriously.

It may very well be that this little guy doesn’t get a name until he is in our arms! I will keep checking for more input until he arrives and will let everyone know what we decide…whenever that may be…

Oh and as an interesting and coincidental aside, Oct 11 is the Finnish naming day for Otso. So if little man waits a few more days, we may have no choice in the matter but to give in to serendipity:)

[name]Otto[/name] is cool too. I doubt it will ever be up there with [name]William[/name] though. Not so keen on [name]Otis[/name] due to the movie connection- I agree.
Not so keen on [name]Hawthorne[/name] as it seems a different flavour to me. Much longer.

[name]How[/name] about [name]Isolde[/name]? nn [name]Izzy[/name]?

Is your family Finnish or Finnish-American?

I think Finnish names are fascinating. They always seem so light, yet strong. I think due to the extreme isolation of Finnish as a language it’s difficult to transfer them into a [name]Romance[/name] or Germanic naming context, but I wish they worked more easily.

Anyway, I want to throw a complete and total wrench in the works and say I don’t think any of your three choices are best for the first name slot.

I fear Otso, as a pp noted, will be teased as ‘fatso.’ The -o ending may be fashionable, but I can’t think of many English words, let alone names, that end with -so. It’s so unusual as a phoneme that I think it opens up your son to some very serious teasing (again, assuming you’re not raising him in Finland).

[name]Isidore[/name], to me, is the quintessential elderly Jewish man. The name means “gift of [name]Isis[/name]” but for some reason it took off like wildfire in the Sephardic Jewish community and now has a fusty and decidedly Semitic image (rather like [name]Milton[/name] or [name]Seymour[/name]).

[name]Hawthorne[/name] is very nice indeed. I like the ancient symbolism of the hawthorn tree and flower. But I don’t feel that it fits at all with brother [name]Uli[/name] and sister [name]Wren[/name], both of which are light, brisk names.

Suggestions: I know with [name]Miles[/name] and [name]Lyra[/name] you achieved a musical connection. Have you thought about [name]Arvo[/name]? Finnish composer [name]Arvo[/name] Part is one of my favorites, he did a lot of mind-bending stuff with classical music in the middle of the last century. I know [name]Arvo[/name] is certainly uncommon, but the sounds work well in English and in an English naming context.

Ismo is the Finnish form of [name]Ishmael[/name]. Again, I think the sounds work in an anglophone world, and your husband can get his nickname of [name]Izzy[/name].

[name]Eero[/name] = cool architectural connection; this is gaining some credence as a cool hipster name (though certainly very uncommon) even among people without any Finnish connection.

Jyri = my favorite Finnish name, and the local form of ‘[name]George[/name].’ This name just looks cool on the page. It works in English, though unfortunately I don’t have any musical or artistic associations.

[name]Timo[/name] = [name]Timothy[/name]. Easy to say and spell, looks masculine in the US. Would have a distinct sound from brother [name]Uli[/name]. There are multiple heavy metal musicians named [name]Timo[/name] (not sure if they’re the best namesakes, but still…)

I think you could move [name]Hawthorne[/name] to the middle spot. [name]Arvo[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name] is a pretty cool name, imo.

If you want a jazzy middle to echo brother [name]Miles[/name]:

[name]Coltrane[/name]
Brubeck
[name]Thelonius[/name]
[name]Gillespie[/name]
[name]Calloway[/name]
[name]Ellington[/name]
[name]Duke[/name]
[name]Parker[/name]
[name]Armstrong[/name]
[name]Fitzgerald[/name]

Possible combos:

[name]Eero[/name] [name]Parker[/name]
Ismo [name]Gillespie[/name]
Jyri [name]Coltrane[/name]
[name]Timo[/name] [name]Calloway[/name]

etc…

I love how creative and considered your names are! You have a great style and I am sure you’ll land on something amazing. Otso doesnt live up to your other children’s names in my view. [name]Hawthorne[/name] I love and [name]Huck[/name] would be an adorable nn. I actually like [name]Otis[/name] [name]Hawthorne[/name]/ [name]Hawthorne[/name] [name]Otis[/name]. Good luck!

Not a fan of those choices, sorry. [name]How[/name] about [name]Indy[/name], [name]Muir[/name], [name]Bly[/name], [name]Rye[/name], [name]Arc[/name], [name]Kirk[/name], [name]Fife[/name], Isler, [name]Oz[/name], [name]Crane[/name], [name]Lazer[/name], or [name]Errol[/name]?

Would you consider Velo?

I love [name]Otis[/name], definatley not too out there! I think you’d like [name]Aleph[/name] maybe?
I like Ochre as well sort of like [name]Otis[/name]?
