My husband LOVES the name [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] for a girl (middle name will be [name_f]Marie[/name_f]). I like it, but I’m not 100% sold. I’m worried it could be too masculine and there isn’t a good nickname for it. I have always liked boys names for girls, but now faced with naming my child, it’s stressful. Looking for other’s opinions on it.
We want a name that isn’t too common or trendy, but also something that won’t be [name_m]WAY[/name_m] out there.
I like “boyish names” but not boy’s names for a girl. [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] is a masculine name, mostly wore by boys and sounds way too masculine, I don’t see it on a girl, sorry.
I like [name_u]Blake[/name_u] (but it is very popular for boys too) and [name_u]Riley[/name_u] in your list. [name_f]Nora[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] & [name_f]Lila[/name_f] are pretty, but more girly.
What about using two MNs?
[name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f]
[name_f]Nora[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_u]Riley[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
I think [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] could be a wonderful girl’s name! I would use the nn [name_f]Dillie[/name_f] or [name_u]Lannie[/name_u], or maybe you could use her middle name as a nickname. My mn is [name_f]Grace[/name_f], and my mum often calls me [name_f]Gracie[/name_f].
To be honest, I don’t think a girl having a masculine name is a bad thing - if fact, I’m all for names becoming totally unisex. To me, when it comes down to it, names are just a number of sounds strung together in a pleasing way. Any distinction between them is totally arbitrary.
I love [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] for a girl and if I could use it, it would be #1 on my list to use! From your list it is my favorite too. I really like the combo [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f].
I personally grew up with a girl names [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] (she’s 20 now) and I have always adored her name. I think [name_f]Lana[/name_f] works really well as a nn and I love the combo of [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] marie!
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u] as a girl totally works imo! I don’t mind unisex names at all- I don’t see why girls and boys can’t share names. No one would baulk at either a male or female [name_u]Alex[/name_u] or [name_u]Sam[/name_u] (albeit short for different full names)- why can’t there be more names be like that? I see [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] as truly unisex in that I can see it on both genders and wouldn’t be surprised if I met one of either gender. Probably because two of my favourite book series growing up had female main characters named [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] and the only one I’ve ever known in real life was male. [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] has great flow. It doesn’t really need a nickname but you could use [name_f]Dee[/name_f] (as in the starting letter D). My favourite of your list is [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] which is sweet but doesn’t have the same feel as [name_u]Dylan[/name_u].
Thanks for your thoughts! It makes me feel better about it that so many people think it’s an acceptable girls name. I’m still on the fence between going girly or sticking to my original thought of a unisex name, which I’ve always loved.
My hubby also is a guitarist, so it has a little bit of a [name_m]Rock[/name_m] and [name_m]Roll[/name_m] feel I think.
I’m really not a fan of [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] for a girl. It is not unisex, unless you have a loose definition of ‘unisex’. I won’t get into the whole “boy name vs. girl name”, “OH I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] IT!!!”, etc arguments but I will address a point which I haven’t seen brought up here yet. If you were to have more children in addition to your female [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], how would you name them? Would using a boy name for a girl influence what you would name an actual male child…her sibling? Would it bother you to have a [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] and a [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m], for example, and have people thinking that you have two boys? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any ideas of what you would choose for a female sibling of a female [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]? Would it feel “off” to you if you were to have a [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] and a [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] (again, for example)? Would you feel like you would have to keep up the trend?
I asked those questions because there are always a few threads by people at any one time who have questions about naming trends that they either A) intentionally started, or B) incidentally got themselves into, and either want to break or keep going and need advice. If none of those bother you, then okay. If they do, then you may want to put a bit more thought into the decision. In the end, it is your child and your choice. With any name, you are going to have people who love it, those who like it, those who hate it, and those who lie to you about their true feelings. Good luck!
I definitely think [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] could work for a girl. There’s a Disney original movie called Geek Charming and the main character in that is called [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]. At first I was like what? But then I grew to really love it! I see [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] as more of a unisex name these days, rather than a boys name (and face it, if people are using [name_u]James[/name_u] on a girl, then [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] can most certainly be used!)
I was going to say, as long as you pair it with an obviously feminine middle, then go for it. You’ve already beaten me to it, [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is simply gorgeous! (I’ve known people who’ve introduced their child as say, [name_u]Devon[/name_u] [name_u]Riley[/name_u], and you have to think for a moment about if its a he or a she!)
i have always thought dylan to be completly unisex because growing up i knew both a boy and a girl with that name it always surprises me that people only see it as a male name by the way it comes from old irish word dealan-de which means butterfly so i think its sweet for a girl also dealan is a scottish gaelic word for lightning
Thanks for your questions. We actually already have a son named [name_m]Jack[/name_m]. So it would be [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]. (And we’re done having babies after that.)
I think [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is lovely. I wouldn’t worry about siblings, is it really the end of the world if you have to correct people that you don’t have two sons but a daughter and a son? Plus, I would assume you will usually introduce your children as “my son [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and my daughter [name_u]Dylan[/name_u]”. If you really really really care what people think, then don’t use it. If you’re okay with correcting people every once in awhile, use the name your husband loves (and you’re okay with). I think the name will grow on you once you see it on your chubby little newborn. Good luck & congratulations on your sweet girl!
I do like “boyish” names for girls (all mine have unisex names) but [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] isn’t one of them. I personally like [name_u]Riley[/name_u] from your list (I have a [name_u]Ryley[/name_u]) and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u].
I’m usually quite picky about names on certain genders (there are some I love, but quite a lot that I really dislike), but I actually like [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] I think it has been used as a girl’s name often enough that it is still unusual, but in a good/easily accepted way. My name (though spelt differently) is traditionally a boy’s name, and I’ve never particularly had an issue with gender confusion when it’s spoken aloud. My favourite name from your list is definitely [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - it’s gorgeous!
I personally am not a fan of masculine names on girls (at least when it comes to naming my own future children), but I get the appeal, and I respect it. With that being said, I actually really like the name [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] on a girl. I think it will wear well, and I can actually see a little girl running around playing and wearing the name [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] well. Perhaps you could play with the spelling to give it a more famine vibe, if you are still not too sure about it. Maybe something like [name_f]Dylann[/name_f], the emphasizing the “[name_f]Ann[/name_f]”, might help the name become more unisex. As for nickname suggestions all I can think of would be, [name_f]Dillie[/name_f], [name_u]Lannie[/name_u], Dil, [name_f]Dee[/name_f], [name_f]Deedee[/name_f], Lan, [name_f]Lana[/name_f], or [name_f]Ann[/name_f].
Out of your list of masculine names on girls, I really only like [name_u]Blake[/name_u]. I still think [name_u]Dylan[/name_u] is the winner though. Out of the more feminine name on your list, I like [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] & [name_f]Nora[/name_f].
Good luck!
