Okay, this one is a doozy. Basically, in an as-yet-unnamed society, there are three injections it is possible to receive at the age of 13–Perfection (good), Normality (neutral) and Insanity (bad). from 13 to 16 the three Castes of Life intermingle, and at 16 they are split up to head into the separate societies where they will live from then on out.
The story is about 15-year-old triplets who are each in a different Caste of Life. Simple, easy. But they need Names! This is where you lovely folks here at nameberry come in.
Here are the characters:
A plain girl who used to be dull has been turned into a Perfect. She loves her new status but wishes to be able to maintain friendships. This conflicts with the love she is beginning to form with another Perfect.
A girl who has always been plain but with a fierce kindness and joy in living laments the slow leaking away of her sympathy and love as she now has normal levels of “kindness”. She aches to do anything to stop it as her friendships start to fade.
A fiery, rebellious girl who has been turned into an Insane. She can slightly recollect what it was like to be smart and strong and beautiful, but is slowly spiraling into the depths of insanity, and not just Insanity.
I’ve got the characters and a decent plot shaping up, but I need help with naming these people. A surname for the three of them would be great, but not needed.
This is somewhere in the VERY DISTANT future, so anything readable goes!
Perfect: Ecol or Pecla, from [name]Pecola[/name] Breedlove in “The Bluest Eye”
Normal: [name]Atina[/name], from [name]Athena[/name], the goddess of kindness
Insanity: [name]Felia[/name] or [name]Phelia[/name], from [name]Ophelia[/name]
Girl 1: I’m still stumped on her. I’m looking for something either plain-sounding with a kick of meaning, or something unique and fresh but still simple.
Girl 2: [name]Aleigha[/name]. It was suggested for girl three, but I like it better here. It’s one of those gut-instinct things I usually rely on.
Girl 3: [name]Aeva[/name]. Not only is the sound perfect, but it’s a variation of [name]Ava[/name], which means “like a bird”, and I think this girl is feeling like a caged bird.
Oh, darn, I just realized that [name]Aleigha[/name] and [name]Aeva[/name] start with the same letter, which is usually a big writer no-no. Any tips?
I think using the same letters on the first name is fine, it might catch some attention but it could also be seen as something that makes girl one even more distinctive and more ‘perfect’ than her sisters. I’m really glad you liked [name]Aeva[/name].
Girl 1: I could see something classic, like [name]Claire[/name] or [name]Whitney[/name]
Girl 2: [name]Selena[/name], [name]March[/name], and you already like [name]Aleigha[/name]
Girl 3: [name]Madonna[/name] nn [name]Maddy[/name], [name]Rowena[/name], Tryne (means innocent woman )
I think [name]Claire[/name], [name]Selena[/name], and Tryne is a good combo…
I like Nimue (nim-ooh-ay) called “[name]Nim[/name]” for one of them. She was the Lady of the [name]Lake[/name] from Arthurian legend, so there’s a lot of interesting stuff to work with there.
Otherwise …
Sose (soh-see) / [name]Sosie[/name] (Sose means ‘safe’ in Greek. The [name]Sosie[/name] spelling would only be to clarify the pronunciation, but [name]Sosie[/name] is sometimes used as a nickname for [name]Susan[/name].)
[name]Vrai[/name] (French for ‘true.’)
[name]Asya[/name] (Used as a nickname for [name]Anastasia[/name] / [name]Anastasiya[/name] which means ‘resurrection.’)
[name]Zola[/name] (Like [name]Emile[/name] [name]Zola[/name], the French writer.)
[name]Roux[/name] (roo)
[name]Ziva[/name] (“brilliance, brightness”)
[name]Cyra[/name] (seer-uh)
[name]Haidee[/name] (“modest”, and also possibly derived from Aoide, the name of one of the muse of song)
[name]Calla[/name]
Bia (Greek personification of force)
[name]Clea[/name]
[name]Zuri[/name]
[name]Mila[/name] / [name]Milla[/name]
[name]Altair[/name]
[name]Astoria[/name]
[name]Arista[/name]
If I do two of them with the same first initial (and I think I’m pretty much set on [name]Aleigha[/name] and [name]Aeva[/name]), than I’m fairly sure I want to do the other girl with an ‘A’ name too. I’m thinking the society would name them, and that seems like the sort of thing they’d do. shrugs Also, both names start and end with a, so, unless there is another ‘A’ name that speaks to me, I want to keep that trend. It would be great if it had a different syllable count, but that would put it at four syllables, fairly unapproachable to readers.
So…
Girl 1–I’m thinking [name]Arista[/name], [name]Anastatia[/name], [name]Andrina[/name]. Any other suggestions which are better than that (admittedly not hard) would be welcome.
Girl 2–Definitely [name]Aleigha[/name] here. I’m liking it more and more every time I see it on her.
Girl 3–Probably [name]Aeva[/name]. If you can thing of something else, feel free to toss it at me, but I’m thinking I’ll stick with [name]Aeva[/name].
I may be late in replying but how about [name_f]Aria[/name_f] or [name_f]Auria[/name_f] for the first girl. Then you’d have Auria/Aria, [name_f]Aleigha[/name_f] and [name_f]Aeva[/name_f]
